Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 — Returned

The crack above Qingyun Sect widened.

Slowly.

Silently.

Like reality itself no longer possessed the strength to resist.

---

The infected disciple took another step.

Its movements had become smoother now.

Less like a puppet.

More like something learning.

---

"…Found."

The voice echoed strangely across the shattered ceremonial platform.

Not loudly.

But the word seemed to linger.

As though space itself repeated it after hearing it once.

---

Wei Jun finally moved.

Not backward.

Forward.

---

Sword light erupted.

Cold.

Precise.

Without hesitation.

---

This time he aimed for the head.

---

The strike crossed the distance instantly.

Silver light flashed—

and the disciple's neck separated cleanly.

The head spun through the air.

The body remained standing.

---

For a single breath—

nothing happened.

---

Then darkness spread.

Thin black lines extended from the severed neck and connected to the falling head like threads stitching reality itself together.

---

The head stopped midair.

Turned.

Looked at Shen Luo.

Smiled.

---

Wei Jun stared.

For perhaps the first time since Qingyun Sect began collapsing—

he looked genuinely shaken.

---

"…No."

---

The head drifted slowly back.

Attached.

Reformed.

---

No blood.

No flesh.

No healing.

---

Correction.

---

As if separation itself had been rejected.

---

Shen Luo felt the pathway inside him pulse once.

Hard.

---

And suddenly—

he understood.

---

That body no longer viewed itself as matter.

---

Matter could break.

Matter could separate.

Matter could die.

---

But convergence sought coherence.

Not life.

Not death.

---

Unity.

---

Wei Jun stepped backward slowly.

"…What exactly is that thing?"

---

Shen Luo looked at the disciple.

No.

Past it.

---

Because something else had started looking through its eyes now.

Something distant.

Ancient.

Watching from the other side.

---

"…A message," Shen Luo said quietly.

---

The disciple smiled wider.

---

Then the sky moved.

---

Not the clouds.

Not the fracture.

---

The eye.

---

Far above Qingyun Sect, the impossible eye shifted.

Only slightly.

Only enough to focus.

---

Directly downward.

---

On Shen Luo.

---

Pressure exploded across the mountain.

---

The surviving formation arrays shattered instantly.

Several distant peaks collapsed.

Thousands of stone fragments rose into the air around Qingyun Sect before compressing inward and vanishing.

---

Wei Jun coughed blood and dropped to one knee.

Even Shen Luo felt his body shake.

Not from force.

Recognition.

---

The pathway inside him surged violently.

The fractures beneath his skin spread further.

Across his neck.

Across his face.

Dark lines briefly appeared beneath his eyes before fading again.

---

And suddenly—

a memory surfaced.

Not a complete memory.

A fragment.

---

Darkness.

Infinite darkness.

---

Countless figures kneeling beneath structures larger than worlds.

Endless pathways stretching between stars.

Ancient voices speaking words he should not understand.

---

Then—

one phrase.

Cold.

Absolute.

---

**"Deviation Sequence Unit 9… return pending."**

---

Shen Luo froze.

---

No.

---

No.

---

The words struck harder than the collapsing mountain.

Harder than the thing beyond the sky.

Because for the first time—

the fear from earlier returned.

Larger now.

Sharper.

---

Not:

*What if I was returned?*

---

Something worse.

---

*What if I once belonged there?*

---

The disciple took another step.

Closer.

Smiling.

---

Then it spoke again.

Not "Found."

Not this time.

---

This time the voice carried endless layered echoes.

As though countless things spoke through one mouth.

---

"Deviation designation confirmed."

---

Wei Jun looked toward Shen Luo.

Then toward the disciple.

Then back again.

---

Slowly—

his face lost color.

---

"…Shen Luo…"

---

Silence.

---

"…What did it just call you?"

---

Shen Luo did not answer.

Because he couldn't.

Because above them—

the eye widened slightly.

Because inside him—

the pathway was no longer responding.

---

It was awakening.

---

And somewhere beyond heaven—

something had finally found what it had been searching for.

---

Him.
