Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 — The World Is Watching

The video spread in minutes.

Not hours.

Instantly.

A car—stopped mid-motion.

A kid—standing in the street.

And a man—

Doing something no one could explain.

Phones caught it from every angle.

"…he didn't even touch it—"

"…there's nothing there—look—nothing—"

"That's the same guy—"

The same man tied to destruction.

To impossible events.

And now—

Saving someone.

That—

Changed everything.

---

News channels picked it up immediately.

"…this individual, previously linked to multiple unexplained incidents…"

"…now seen preventing what could have been a fatal accident…"

"…raising new questions about whether he is a threat—or something else entirely…"

Clips looped.

Analyzed.

Debated.

---

Inside S.H.I.E.L.D.—

Screens filled the room.

Social spikes.

News feeds.

Civilian uploads.

"He's trending worldwide," an agent said.

Nick Fury watched the footage in silence.

Another agent spoke.

"Public response is split. Some see him as dangerous. Others are calling him—"

"A hero," Fury said.

"…Yes, sir."

Fury didn't react.

"…That's the problem."

A pause.

"He's not following a pattern," another agent added. "Destruction, then intervention—there's no clear objective."

Fury nodded slightly.

"…Exactly."

That made a few agents look up.

"…Sir?"

"He's not executing a plan," Fury said.

"…He's exploring."

The word settled differently.

"He acts," Fury continued, "then watches what happens."

A beat.

"…Which means we can't predict him."

Silence.

Because that—

Was worse.

"Control the narrative," Fury ordered. "Keep it contained. No speculation from us."

"Yes, sir."

A pause.

"…And Stark?"

"He's already seen it."

Fury gave a small nod.

"…Of course he has."

---

Inside Stark Tower—

Tony Stark replayed the footage again.

Slower.

Frame by frame.

The car.

The stop.

No contact.

No visible force.

No delay.

Tony leaned forward slightly.

"…Yeah, that's not tech," he said.

A pause.

"…There's nothing there."

No emitter.

No device.

No system.

"…He's just doing it."

That—

Narrowed things down.

A lot.

Tony stood, pacing slightly.

"…No suit, no tools, no interface…"

He shook his head.

"…Okay, so we're not dealing with something I can reverse-engineer."

That was new.

Uncomfortable.

"…Which means I need to talk to him," Tony said.

Not optional.

Necessary.

---

High above the city—

Loki watched.

The reaction.

Not the act.

The people.

Fear.

Relief.

Confusion.

"…They're trying to define you," Loki murmured.

A faint smile.

"…They always do."

---

Back on the street—

Lucas walked.

Same pace.

Same calm.

But the city—

Had changed.

Screens played his face.

His actions.

People noticed.

Whispered.

Pointed.

"…That's him—"

"Yo that's actually him—"

"He saved that kid—"

Others stepped back.

Kept distance.

Watched carefully.

Lucas noticed both.

"…They're reacting differently now," he said quietly.

Not just to the event.

To him.

He stopped briefly in front of a screen.

Watching himself.

From their perspective.

The moment.

Reduced.

Simplified.

Turned into something they could understand.

"…That's not what happened," he said.

But—

It didn't matter.

Because this—

Was what they believed happened.

He looked away.

"…That's how this spreads."

---

Elsewhere—

Natasha Romanoff stood in silence, watching the same footage.

"…He didn't try to hide it," she said.

No one responded.

"…He wanted it seen."

Not part of a plan.

But not accidental either.

---

Back in the city—

Lucas slowed slightly.

Not because of the crowd.

Because of something else.

Familiar.

"…You're still here."

"You're hard to ignore."

Lucas turned.

Loki stood there.

Watching him.

"…You're paying more attention now," Lucas said.

"I always was," Loki replied. "You've just become more interesting."

Lucas glanced at the nearby screens.

"…They're reacting."

"Yes," Loki said. "And they will keep reacting."

A pause.

"…Even if you don't do anything."

Lucas looked at him.

"…Because they need an answer."

Loki smiled.

"…Exactly."

Another pause.

"…And they won't like not having one."

Lucas looked back at the city.

At the people.

At the noise.

"…That's not my problem," he said.

Loki's smile didn't fade.

"…It will be."

That—

Felt different.

Not a threat.

Just—

Inevitable.

---

And now—

The world wasn't just watching Lucas.

It was trying to understand him.

And failing.
