Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Cost of Going Higher

The world did not become harder.

It became precise.

Kritagya moved forward with measured steps, no longer attempting to impose his presence upon the environment, but aligning himself with its structure. The fractured terrain had begun to thin, not disappearing, but reorganizing into patterns that no longer felt random. The distortions he had encountered before were less frequent now, but their absence did not signal safety.

It signaled elevation.

The air carried a sharper density, not heavy, not oppressive, but refined, as though every part of this space had been reduced to only what was necessary. There was no excess here. No instability. No wasted motion.

That alone—

was enough to confirm it.

He had moved into a higher layer.

Rudra followed at a distance, not speaking, not guiding, his presence quieter than before. He was no longer observing for correction. He was observing for outcome.

That, too—

was different.

Kritagya slowed.

Not from uncertainty.

From recognition.

Something ahead had already begun to form.

This time, there was no gradual distortion, no unstable flicker announcing its presence. The space itself shifted first, aligning into a fixed point before anything appeared within it.

Then—

it emerged.

The figure did not resemble the previous ones.

It held its shape without effort, its form neither flickering nor distorting. It was not bound by the environment, nor did it appear to respond to it. It existed independently, occupying its space with an authority that did not require validation.

Kritagya stopped.

The entity did not move.

It did not observe in the way the others had.

It acknowledged.

The difference—

was immediate.

Rudra spoke.

"Don't engage it the same way."

Kritagya did not look at him.

"That's already understood."

The entity took a single step forward.

The ground did not shift beneath it.

The air did not react.

Only the space between them changed.

It shortened.

Not through speed.

Through presence.

Kritagya felt it immediately.

The mark beneath his skin pulsed—

not in response—

in warning.

That, too—

was new.

The voice followed.

"This one requires more."

Kritagya remained still.

Because the statement—

was obvious.

The entity stopped again, now closer, its form more defined, its presence clearer. There was no distortion left in it, no instability to exploit, no weakness in structure.

It was complete.

Kritagya raised his hand.

Not to command.

To test.

The space around the entity tightened slightly, a subtle attempt at alignment rather than control.

Nothing happened.

The entity remained unchanged.

Kritagya increased the pressure.

Carefully.

Measured.

The mark pulsed harder.

The space responded—

but only partially.

The entity slowed.

Not because it was stopped.

Because it allowed the interaction.

Then—

it moved again.

The pressure broke instantly.

Not through resistance.

Through superiority.

Kritagya lowered his hand.

The conclusion formed.

Control—

was not possible.

Not at this level.

Rudra stepped closer.

"This is where most people break," he said quietly.

Kritagya did not respond.

Because breaking—

required something to hold onto.

The entity moved again.

Closer.

The distance between them reduced to a point where space itself no longer separated them meaningfully.

Kritagya adjusted his stance.

Not to attack.

Not to retreat.

To survive.

The entity extended something—not a limb, not a defined shape, but an extension of its presence, a contact that did not rely on physical interaction.

The moment it reached him—

the world shifted.

Not outward.

Inward.

Kritagya felt it immediately.

Not pain.

Not resistance.

Loss.

Not gradual.

Immediate.

Something within him—

disappeared.

Not weakened.

Not reduced.

Gone.

A memory surfaced.

Clear.

The image of his mother standing inside the house, her hand resting briefly on his shoulder, her voice carrying concern that he had not understood at the time.

That memory—

collapsed.

Not erased.

Disconnected.

It existed—

but meant nothing.

Kritagya remained still.

Because reaction—

no longer followed.

The entity withdrew.

The contact ended.

The space returned.

Kritagya exhaled slowly.

Not from strain.

From recalibration.

Rudra watched him.

Carefully.

"What did it take?"

The question came again.

Kritagya answered without delay.

"Connection."

Rudra's gaze held.

Longer this time.

"That was higher than before."

Kritagya nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And it still wasn't enough."

The conclusion was clear.

The cost had increased.

But the result—

had not.

The entity remained.

Unchanged.

Unmoved.

Kritagya looked at it.

For the first time—

not with intent to control.

With understanding.

This was not something to overcome.

This was something—

to reach.

The mark pulsed again.

Steadier now.

Adjusted.

The voice spoke.

"You're close."

Kritagya did not respond.

Because proximity—

did not matter.

Only threshold.

He turned.

Not abandoning the encounter.

Deferring it.

Because forcing it further—

would cost more than it returned.

Rudra followed.

Not questioning.

Not interrupting.

Because the decision—

was correct.

Kritagya walked.

This time—

with less than before.

And yet—

closer than he had ever been.
