Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Space Between Us

By evening, the village had begun to change.

Not openly.

Not in ways that could be pointed out or named.

But in the small things.

The way conversations stopped when Kritagya passed.

The way eyes lingered a moment too long before turning away.

The way distance formed—not out of instruction, but instinct.

No one said anything directly.

But everyone had seen enough.

Kritagya did not need to ask.

He already understood.

Perception had shifted.

And once that happened—

it did not return to what it was.

He walked along the outer edge of the village, where the ground became uneven and the noise faded into something distant and unimportant. The sun was lowering slowly, casting long shadows that stretched across the land like silent observers.

Behind him—

Vyom followed.

But not close.

Not anymore.

The distance between them had settled into something consistent.

Measured.

Intentional.

Kritagya did not look back.

Not because he was unaware.

But because he had already registered it.

Every step.

Every pause.

Every hesitation.

The bond had not broken.

But it was no longer instinctive.

It had become—

conditional.

Kritagya stopped.

The movement was sudden enough that Vyom halted as well, its body tightening slightly, its attention shifting immediately.

For a moment—

neither moved.

Then Kritagya turned.

Slowly.

Their eyes met.

There was no hostility.

No aggression.

But something had changed.

Before—

Vyom's gaze had been steady, unwavering, anchored.

Now—

there was calculation.

A subtle distance in its awareness.

As if it was no longer certain of what it was looking at.

Kritagya stepped forward.

One step.

Vyom did not retreat.

But it did not move closer either.

The space between them remained.

Unbroken.

Uncrossed.

Kritagya stopped.

For a moment—

he considered.

Not emotionally.

Structurally.

The sequence was clear.

Contact.

Disturbance.

Reaction.

Distance.

The change was not in Vyom.

It was in him.

That was the only variable.

Kritagya lowered his gaze slightly.

His hand moved.

Not fully extended.

Not withdrawn.

Paused.

A decision point.

Then—

he let it fall.

The action was unnecessary.

The result already known.

Vyom remained still.

Watching.

Waiting.

But not approaching.

Kritagya turned again.

And continued walking.

This time—

Vyom followed after a delay.

Longer than before.

The gap widened.

And neither of them closed it.

The forest stood ahead.

Dark.

Familiar.

But no longer the same.

Kritagya stopped at the boundary.

He did not step inside.

Not yet.

The disturbance stirred.

Faint.

Persistent.

Like something waiting.

Not for him to enter.

For him to return.

Kritagya's breathing slowed.

Controlled.

Measured.

He stepped forward.

Crossing the boundary.

The feeling returned instantly.

Stronger than before.

Not overwhelming.

But undeniable.

The forest was no longer neutral.

It was aware.

Kritagya walked deeper.

Vyom followed—

but stopped sooner this time.

It did not go as far.

It did not trust the space.

Or what it did to him.

Kritagya continued alone.

Each step carried weight.

Not physical.

Internal.

The delay returned.

Slight.

Then—

more noticeable.

0.3 seconds.

Then—

0.5.

Unacceptable.

Kritagya stopped.

Closed his eyes.

Stabilized breathing.

Forced alignment.

For a moment—

it worked.

Then—

the voice returned.

Clearer this time.

Closer.

"You're resisting."

Kritagya did not open his eyes.

He did not respond.

Because response acknowledged.

And acknowledgment—

gave presence weight.

The voice continued.

"You always do."

A pause.

"At first."

Kritagya's eyes opened slowly.

The forest remained unchanged.

But the disturbance—

had deepened.

"Define yourself."

The command came without hesitation.

This time—

the answer followed immediately.

"I am what remains."

Kritagya's gaze sharpened.

That answer—

was different.

Less ambiguous.

More structured.

Which meant—

it was learning.

Adapting.

Just like him.

Kritagya turned.

He stepped back.

Out of the deeper forest.

Toward the boundary.

The pressure reduced.

Vyom remained where it had stopped.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kritagya approached.

This time—

Vyom did not step back.

But it did not step forward either.

The space remained.

Kritagya stopped in front of it.

Close.

But not touching.

For a moment—

their eyes met again.

And this time—

there was something else.

Not fear.

Not distance.

Recognition.

Of change.

Kritagya spoke.

Quietly.

"You feel it."

Not a question.

Vyom's ears shifted slightly.

Its body remained still.

But its gaze did not break.

That was enough.

Confirmation.

Kritagya looked away.

The conclusion was complete.

The disturbance was no longer isolated.

It was shared.

Not fully.

But enough.

He turned.

And walked back toward the village.

Vyom followed.

After a pause.

Longer than before.

The distance remained.

Consistent.

Unresolved.

Behind them—

the forest stood silent.

Not empty.

Not waiting.

Watching.

Because something had begun—

not in the clearing—

not in the forest—

but within him.

And whatever it was—

it was no longer content to remain hidden.
