Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Scent of Danger

Jasmine shifted uncomfortably in her seat, then broke the uneasy silence.

"What was that?" She demanded, then turned her gaze to him. "Why would you do that, and where are you taking me to?"

"Home," Evans retorted absentmindedly.

"Home? You just ruined my day, and you're taking me home?"

"Where else should I take you? A date?" He asked, but she remained mute. "I apologized for making your cake fall...it was not on purpose, and we had to leave that place...it was dangerous."

Jasmine scoffed. "Dangerous where? You are the one that that creepy man was following about...you should have gone out and negotiated with him on whatever you guys had for him to be following you."

Evans' expression remained the same. "I can't...I just can't."

Jasmine took her eyes off him, then crossed her arms. "Why do you have issues with almost everyone? First, it was Edward and his group, then it was this scary-looking man. Who knows who else you'd have an issue with next?"

Evans hesitated as they rolled into traffic, then he replied.

"I know I must have caused you some inconvenience today. I had no intention of bumping into you...I did not even know that I'd find you in that bakery. It was a total coincidence. I am sorry once again."

Silence enveloped them.

"Do you really not know that man?" Jasmine questioned calmly.

"No. I've never seen him before, I don't know why he has been following me."

"Since when?"

"Today. I went to repair my phone, and he has been following me since I entered the bus. I had to stop so I could avoid him."

"Oh," she shifted her gaze to the waiting cars in front of them. "You should go to the cops and inform them. Stalkers are rampant nowadays...he must be one of them."

Evans nodded.

Deep down, he knew the stranger was not just a stalker.

He is also a werewolf.

He saw it in his vision.

And the way he sensed his presence...he seemed more powerful than Edward. Evans could smell his aura so well that it was intimidating. The traffic cleared, and he began driving.

"Who was the cake for? I could apologize in person to them," Evans let out warmly.

Jasmine beamed as she relaxed in her seat. "I'm not sure Chris would like that. I'll get something else for him since it's his birthday."

Evans raised an eyebrow. "I thought rich parents don't allow their children to date anyone just anyhow."

Jasmine laughed as she clapped her hands together. "Chris is my pet. I don't have a boyfriend for now. Most of them are in my DMs begging me to date them, but I know they just want my money."

"Oh."

"Yeah...I have a sudden idea."

"What?"

"Can you drive me to a nearby supermarket? I should get a few toys for Chris. I have to celebrate his birthday today, otherwise he'll give me an attitude," she declared.

Evans pondered her words.

He could not feel any strange sensation for now, which means that the stranger was not around, but does that mean his vision would not come true? If he risked taking her to the supermarket, what if the man showed up?

He bit his lower lip, and Jasmine noticed.

"Are you thinking about what I said?" she inquired curiously.

"Let's just head home..."

"You can't be serious." Jasmine cut in instantly as she frowned. "You owe me, Evans. The least you can do is drive me to the supermarket, and...I don't even want you to escort me. What if that creepy man is still stalking you? I can't risk my life."

"I'll come along," he answered back, then muttered, "I can protect you and I that way."

"What did you say?"

"There should be a nearby supermarket. Check while I focus on driving," he retorted calmly.

Jasmine obeyed reluctantly. She took her phone from her handbag and scrolled through the screen, her brows knitted as she tapped continuously.

"One is not far from here. Just take the next left turn and head straight," she said after a few moments.

Evans nodded.

His eyes flickered to the rear-view mirror, but there was nothing unusual. Just cars and ordinary people.

"You keep checking the mirror...are you sure you are okay?" Jasmine asked as she narrowed her eyes.

"I am okay...I was just checking the cars behind us," Evans replied dryly.

They pulled up in the supermarket parking lot. People were going in and coming out moderately, while Jasmine adjusted her handbag on her shoulder carefully.

Distant chatter and carts rolling filled the air, but Evans was bothered about something else.

"I don't think you should follow me. You are already acting weird enough that if you enter there, you'll scare people," Jasmine let out as she stepped out of the car.

Evans gave no reply.

He knew it would be safe for him to just sit in the car and do nothing, but what about Jasmine? What if his vision was about to come true? At least if he's with her, there is a better opportunity for him to save her.

He alighted from the car reluctantly, then adjusted his glasses.

"I'll help you with the things you want to get. Just think of it as compensation for your cake."

Jasmine shrugged her shoulders. "Very well."

Evans followed her closely while his eyes scanned the surroundings.

No strange sensations.

As they stepped into the supermarket, cold air hit them. Soft music played in the background, complemented by organized shelves and bright lights.

He followed Jasmine to the toy section, and as they moved deeper, she began to examine various toys. Evans stayed close, adjusting his glasses every second.

"I'm not sure Chris would like these toys...they are not really his taste," Jasmine declared softly.

Evans shifted his gaze to one of the shelves. "What pet is Chris?"

Jasmine stopped for a moment, then met his gaze. "Does it matter?"

"Yes."

"A turtle. Chris is a turtle."

"And I bet he has a lot of toys at home? Doesn't he?" Evans inquired calmly.

"Of course. What do you expect?"

"Just buy a cake here. I'll pay for it. Since...he won't like the toys you are seeing...get a cake from the store. What do you think?"

Jasmine hesitated.

Evans scanned the surroundings again...very quickly.

Looking for the perfect toy would cost them time.

He could not afford to waste it.

And if he wasted it...the outcome would be a disaster.
