Chapter 20 - Can we still be frnd's?!

Focus-- Lines That Begin to Blur

The night deepened further, though the workshop remained brightly lit now.

Work had resumed its steady rhythm.

Pages turned. Notes were compared. Connections slowly formed between scattered pieces.

---

John was focused.

Eric was too.

But the way they worked—together—had begun to feel less rigid than before.

---

"…This supplier is linked to the second invoice," John said, pointing at a highlighted line.

---

Eric leaned in slightly.

"…Yeah. And the timestamp matches the gap we found earlier."

---

John nodded.

"Which means the delay wasn't accidental."

---

Eric exhaled lightly.

"…Someone's covering it up."

---

The conclusion wasn't surprising anymore.

It was becoming clearer with every step.

---

But what stood out more than the conclusion—

Was how naturally they arrived at it together.

---

No arguments.

No friction.

Just alignment.

---

Eric flipped another page.

"…We should map all connections visually tomorrow."

---

John agreed.

"Yes. A structured diagram will help identify the central node."

---

Eric smirked faintly.

"…You and your diagrams."

---

John glanced at him briefly.

"…They're efficient."

---

"…Yeah," Eric replied. "They are."

---

A pause followed.

Not awkward.

Just… calm.

---

Then Eric added, almost casually,

"…You've always been like this."

---

John looked up.

"…Like what?"

---

"Organized. Precise. Thinking ahead."

---

John didn't respond immediately.

---

"…It helps," he said finally.

---

Eric nodded slowly.

"…It always did."

---

That last part came out softer than intended.

---

John noticed.

But didn't comment on it.

---

Instead, he returned to the document in front of him.

---

The silence between them continued.

But it wasn't empty.

It carried familiarity.

Shared history.

Unspoken understanding.

---

Moments later—

John paused mid-reading.

---

"…Eric."

---

Eric looked up.

"…Yeah?"

---

John hesitated briefly.

Then asked—

"…Did you always notice details like this?"

---

Eric raised an eyebrow slightly.

"…What kind of question is that?"

---

John's gaze stayed on him.

"…Just answer."

---

Eric leaned back slightly.

"…Not always."

---

A pause.

Then he added,

"…But with you… it became easier."

---

John's expression shifted—subtle, but noticeable.

"…Easier?"

---

Eric nodded.

"…You make things… clear."

---

John didn't respond right away.

---

That wasn't a compliment he expected.

Or at least—not phrased that way.

---

"…I see," John said quietly.

---

Eric watched him for a moment.

Then looked away.

---

"…Don't overthink it."

---

John gave a faint nod.

"…I won't."

---

But internally—

He did register it.

---

Because Eric rarely spoke like that.

---

And when he did—

It wasn't without meaning.

---

Elsewhere—

Rayan had returned inside the building, now standing near the corridor outside the workshop.

He didn't enter immediately.

---

He listened first.

Observed the pace.

The tone.

The rhythm of interaction inside.

---

It was steady.

Consistent.

---

Too consistent.

---

Rayan's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…They've changed," he murmured.

---

Not in a dramatic way.

Not obvious enough for outsiders.

---

But noticeable to someone paying attention.

---

Earlier—

There had been distance.

Tension.

Avoidance.

---

Now—

There was cooperation.

Recognition.

Even… subtle comfort.

---

Rayan crossed his arms.

"…That won't stay stable for long," he said under his breath.

---

Because in situations like this—

Balance rarely remained unchanged.

---

And when emotions—intentional or not—began to surface…

---

They tended to complicate everything.

---

Inside the workshop—

Eric suddenly spoke again.

"…John."

---

John looked up.

"Yes?"

---

Eric hesitated for a fraction of a second.

Then said—

"…Nothing."

---

John observed him briefly.

But didn't press.

---

Instead, he returned to his work.

---

But Eric—

Had almost said something else.

---

Something that didn't fit the moment.

Something that didn't belong in a work conversation.

---

And that realization—

Made him stop himself.

---

Because he wasn't ready to cross that line.

---

Not yet.

---

Not when everything else was still unclear.

---

So he stayed silent.

---

But the thought didn't disappear.

---

It stayed.

Quiet.

Waiting.

---

Just like everything else that had begun to blur between them.
