Chapter 12 - Try to Leave Me

Clara couldn't stay.

Not after that.

Not after the way he looked at her.

Not after what he said.

You don't know what I've done.

Those words didn't leave her mind.

They stayed.

Echoing.

Growing heavier with every second.

She stepped back.

Finally.

Breaking the space between them.

"I need air."

Her voice came out quieter than she wanted.

But firm enough.

For the first time—

she was pulling away.

And he noticed.

Of course he noticed.

His gaze followed her.

But he didn't move.

Didn't stop her.

That was new.

"That's a good idea."

Clara blinked.

Because that—

Wasn't what she expected.

"You're letting me go?"

A pause.

And then—

That faint, unreadable expression returned.

"I'm not stopping you."

The difference mattered.

Clara felt it.

Because he didn't say go.

He said—

I'm not stopping you.

Like it wasn't really his decision.

Like it was still hers.

Her chest tightened.

"Right."

She turned.

Walking toward the door.

Each step heavier than the last.

Because something inside her—

Didn't want to leave.

And that terrified her.

Her hand touched the handle.

Cold.

Real.

This was it.

This was her way out.

She just had to walk.

Just had to leave.

And everything—

everything—

could go back to normal.

But then—

"Clara."

She froze.

Of course she did.

Slowly—

she turned back.

And there he was.

Standing exactly where she left him.

Watching her.

Not stopping her.

But not letting her go either.

"You won't make it far."

Her heart tightened.

"What does that mean?"

A pause.

And then—

He stepped closer.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

But inevitable.

"They already saw you."

His voice dropped.

"They already marked you."

Her breath caught.

Because now—

She understood.

This wasn't just about him anymore.

This was bigger.

More dangerous.

"Then I'll deal with it."

She said it anyway.

Because she had to.

Because if she didn't—

She would stay.

And that scared her more.

His gaze darkened slightly.

"You won't."

Low.

Certain.

"You can't."

Her chest rose sharply.

"You don't get to decide that."

Silence.

And then—

Something shifted again.

Not tension.

Not control.

Something deeper.

"You're right."

Clara blinked.

Again—

not what she expected.

"I don't."

A pause.

"But they do."

The words hit harder.

Because now—

This wasn't him controlling her.

This was the world around him closing in.

And pulling her with it.

Her fingers tightened on the door handle.

"I don't belong in this."

The truth.

Finally.

His gaze held hers.

"You already stepped into it."

Another step closer.

"And you didn't hesitate."

Her breath shook.

"Because I didn't know."

Silence.

Then—

He was right in front of her again.

Close.

Too close.

"You still don't."

His voice dropped.

"And you're still here."

Her heart pounded violently.

Because that—

That was the problem.

She was still there.

Still choosing to stay—

even while trying to leave.

"I'm trying to go."

A whisper now.

Barely steady.

His hand lifted.

Not grabbing.

Not holding.

Just brushing lightly against hers—

still on the door.

Stopping it from opening.

Not by force.

But by presence.

"You're hesitating."

Her breath broke.

Because he was right.

Again.

"Then let me go."

The words came out softer.

Weaker.

And that—

That was the moment everything shifted.

His gaze softened.

Just slightly.

But not with kindness.

With understanding.

"You don't want me to."

Silence.

Because that—

That was the truth she didn't want to admit.

Her grip on the handle loosened.

Just a little.

And that was enough.

His fingers closed around her wrist.

Firm.

Not forceful.

But final.

Pulling her away from the door.

Back toward him.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Like he had all the time in the world.

Like he already knew how this would end.

"You can walk out that door."

His voice dropped.

"I won't stop you."

A pause.

"But the moment you do…"

He leaned closer.

"…you won't be able to come back."

Her breath caught.

Because that—

That changed everything.

That wasn't control.

That was consequence.

And suddenly—

This wasn't about escaping him.

This was about losing him.

Completely.

Her chest tightened.

Because she felt it.

That pull again.

Stronger than ever.

Not just desire.

Not just tension.

Something deeper.

Something that didn't make sense.

But was already there.

Her fingers slowly slipped off the handle.

Her body turning back toward him.

Choosing.

Again.

And the moment she did—

That same quiet, dangerous look returned.

"I told you."

Soft.

Certain.

"You won't leave."

Her heart pounded.

Because now—

She knew.

She hadn't just stayed.

She had chosen him.

Again.

And that—

That was the most dangerous decision she could make.
