Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: When It Starts to Change You

"Yes."

And this time—

she didn't argue.

The word settled between them, quieter than before.

Not heavy.

Not sharp.

Just… accepted.

Lena didn't move immediately.

Her gaze stayed where the figure had disappeared, her mind still catching up to what had just happened.

Because it wasn't just the presence.

It wasn't just the way it moved.

It was the way she reacted.

That was what stayed with her.

"…It didn't feel unfamiliar," she said after a moment.

"No."

Her brows pulled together slightly. "That's not a good thing."

"No."

She let out a slow breath.

"…I knew it was wrong. But it didn't feel new."

"That's because it isn't."

Her head turned toward him fully this time.

"…You're going to have to explain that."

"No."

"…Of course."

But she didn't push further.

Because something about that answer—

the lack of hesitation—

told her enough.

Enough to make her chest tighten again.

"…So this isn't the first time something like that has been here."

"No."

"And it won't be the last."

"No."

She nodded once.

Slowly.

Because now—

that made sense.

Nothing here stayed contained.

Nothing stayed simple.

And whatever she had stepped into—

it was already bigger than her.

Her fingers loosened slightly at her sides.

"…And I'm just supposed to stand here and get used to that."

"Yes."

A quiet breath slipped from her.

"…Right."

Silence settled again.

But it didn't feel empty.

It felt… full.

Like something had shifted permanently.

And this time—

it wasn't just around her.

It was inside her.

Her gaze dropped briefly.

Not to avoid him.

Just… thinking.

"…Something changed," she said.

"Yes."

Her voice lowered slightly. "Not just out there."

"No."

"…It's me."

"Yes."

The answer came too easily.

Too quickly.

Like he had been waiting for her to say it.

Her fingers curled again.

"…I don't like that."

"No."

"But I'm not reacting the way I should."

"No."

She nodded faintly.

Because now—

there was no denying it.

Not after this.

Not after how still she had been.

How she didn't run.

Didn't panic.

Didn't even try to leave.

Her breath slowed again.

"…I should have been more afraid," she said quietly.

"Yes."

"I wasn't."

"No."

Her lips pressed together slightly.

"…That's a problem."

"Yes."

And again—

no hesitation.

No comfort.

Just truth.

Lena let out a breath, her shoulders lowering just slightly.

"…You really don't believe in making things easier."

"No."

"…I've noticed."

A small silence followed.

But it didn't stretch.

Because something else had already taken its place.

That feeling.

That quiet pull in her chest.

Stronger now.

More present.

Not reacting.

Not adjusting.

Just—

there.

Constant.

Her brows pulled together faintly.

"…It's different again," she said.

"Yes."

Her voice dropped. "It didn't feel like this before."

"No."

"…It's stronger."

"Yes."

Her fingers curled tighter.

"…That's because of what just happened."

"Yes."

She exhaled slowly.

"…So it changes every time something like that happens."

"Yes."

"That's not good."

"No."

"Then why does it feel like it is?"

This time—

he didn't answer.

And she didn't ask again.

Because she already knew.

That was the part she couldn't ignore anymore.

It didn't feel like control.

It didn't feel forced.

It felt…

natural.

And that—

that scared her more than anything else.

Her gaze lifted again, settling on him.

And this time—

she didn't look away.

Not immediately.

"…This is going to change things," she said.

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Enough."

That wasn't an answer.

But it was.

She let out a quiet breath.

"…You really don't give details, do you?"

"No."

"…Right."

But she didn't push.

Because something else had her attention now.

Not the room.

Not the space.

Him.

The distance between them.

It felt—

different.

Closer.

Even though neither of them had moved.

Her breath slowed slightly.

"…That's new," she said.

"Yes."

Her voice softened without her meaning it to. "I can feel it more clearly now."

"Yes."

"…That's not supposed to happen."

"No."

She nodded once.

Because now—

she understood that part too.

"…So this isn't just something I deal with."

"No."

"It's something that's going to keep changing."

"Yes."

Her fingers relaxed slowly.

"…And I'm not going to be able to stop it."

"No."

The words settled deeper than anything else.

Not sharp.

Not overwhelming.

Just—

final.

Lena went quiet.

Not because she didn't have anything to say.

But because she didn't need to anymore.

Some things didn't need to be said out loud.

Some things—

you just understood.

And understanding it—

feeling it—

was enough.

Her breath steadied again.

But this time—

it didn't feel forced.

Didn't feel wrong.

It felt…

natural.

And that—

that was the part she couldn't ignore anymore.

"…This is worse than I thought," she said quietly.

"Yes."

Her lips pressed together slightly.

"…But I'm not walking away."

The words came before she could stop them.

And the moment they did—

she froze.

Because she hadn't meant to say that.

Not like that.

Not so easily.

Her breath caught slightly.

"…That's new."

"Yes."

Of course.

Her gaze shifted slightly, but not away.

Just… steadying.

Because now—

she understood something else.

This wasn't just happening to her.

It was changing her.

Slowly.

Quietly.

But undeniably.

And for the first time—

she wasn't sure she wanted to fight it.
