Chapter 15
Misjudgments
Elena
"I wasn't doing this," I whispered under my breath. No, I definitely shouldn't be doing this I thought, my eyes glancing around at the people in the public bus.
Sarah had dropped me off at the bus station, she hadn't said much but her cold determined eyes told me that I didn't have a choice but to continue.
I had to find a way to prove that Damien had actually done something to Lily.
Sarah's words echoed in my ears. "Your father won't let this marriage alliance fall apart so easily, the benefits are enticing," Sarah had stared at me fixedly.
"The only way he'll give it up is If it isn't mutually beneficial, especially to him."
This then brought me to my present impossible task—get a way for Damien to admit, I'd record it. And then Sarah would use her network to make it spread, the marriage would be called off then.
Crazy! That was the word I had for it. Completely bonkers! But I didn't have much of a choice.
I'd offended Father, I had little doubt about Damien's eventual reaction towards me if I was made to go back to him.
He'd make me regret leaving, the thought sent a chill down my spine.
I fiddled with my cell phone, my thoughts in disarray. The cell phone suddenly buzzed, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I frowned as I stared at the number, it wasn't saved on my phone.
"Hello?" I answered cautiously.
"Mummy," Lily's voice rang out, her volume made me flinch.
"Lily?" I smiled, "How're you? Your grand aunt is back?" That was fast I thought, I wasn't even halfway to Damien's company yet Sarah had gotten home using the helicopter.
"Sarah said you were going to get the bad man who hurt me," Lily's next words made me freeze.
"Uhh, yes Lily. Mummy's going to do exactly that," I managed after a pause.
"Lily," Sarah's voice came over the line suddenly. "Why don't you tell your mom what you told me?" She coaxed Lily in a soft voice.
"What's going on?" I asked, confusion seeping into me.
"Listen," Sarah didn't explain anything.
"He didn't hurt me, mummy," Lily whispered in a small voice. "He saved me when…" Lily began recounting the incident. I managed to piece out the puzzle from her jumbled words and phrases.
What! I felt my body turn cold when Lily finished.
Damien hadn't hurt Lily. The revelation hit me like a blow to the gut and my knees would've given way beneath me if I hadn't been seated already.
According to Lily, she'd been woken up by sounds, scared, she'd gone out looking for me. But she'd been startled by Damien and had nearly fallen down the stairs but Damien had saved her.
He'd taken her back into her room and that was when I'd walked in on them. The entire thing fit.
So, I was wrong? The thought made me freeze and a pang of guilt shot through me. To think that all this while, I'd thought Damien was… I shook my head, pushing my thoughts away.
"Elena," Sarah's voice came over the line. "You'll do as I told you," she continued, not caring for the emotions swirling within me. "I won't lose face because of you."
"He didn't do anything to her," I muttered. "I was wrong Sarah," I whispered.
"And I say it doesn't matter," Sarah snapped. "I didn't follow you all this way to make a scene just for it to end up this way. You'll do what I said and that's it," the line went dead.
"I…" I wanted to speak but Sarah didn't give me a chance.
What was I supposed to do? I wondered, frustration biting at me. Did Sarah expect me to continue when I knew that Damien hadn't done anything to Lily?
This was one huge misunderstanding.
My brows were squeezed together as I contemplated my next move. I'd hardly made any headway when the bus eased to a stop. I'd reached my bus stop.
I took a deep breath as I got to my feet, still undecided and I came down from the bus. Damien's company loomed just in front of me.
It was a giant imposing steel building, a lot of people were walking in and out through its doors.
I made my way into the building and entered the elevator to Damien's floor, the top floor.
My mind was a mess of thoughts as the elevator slowly ascended. What was I going to tell Damien? Was I going to apologize? What?
The elevator opened with a soft chime and I stepped out of the elevator into the lobby.
"Good day ma'am, do you have a reservation?" a woman from behind a desk glanced up at me, her expression cold. Her eyes gave me a lookover and I felt her disdain deeper.
"I…" I was stumped, I hadn't considered anything like a reservation or anything when coming.
"I'm Damien's wife," I began, adjusting my gown. "I need to see him," I glanced at the closed door just beside her desk.
"His wife?" The secretary's expression became mocking. "Mr. Damien doesn't have a wife, you need to leave right now," she announced, not even giving me a chance to react.
"What!" My eyes narrowed and I felt a surge of annoyance shoot through me. "Are you saying I'm lying or—"
"People have done worse," the lady interrupted, not caring for my words. "I'll have to ask you to leave ma'am," The secretary got to her feet, her expression looked cold.
"So you'll—" the secretary began but I was done listening. I strode forward quickly, brushing past her and opening the door.
I stepped into the office but the sight before me made me freeze.
Damien was in the embrace of a woman, their bodies were tangled together as she leaned into him.
Despite myself, I felt a stab of pain as I stared at both of them, my supposed husband, in the arms of another.
