Chapter 19 - Trials of Time

The abyss sealed behind them, leaving Kael and Lyra standing in a chamber unlike any they had seen before. The walls shimmered with golden light, etched with countless clocks, hourglasses, and sundials. Each tick echoed, each grain of sand fell with weight. The Trialblade pulsed faintly, its glow bending as though time itself pressed against it.

Kael frowned, gripping the blade tighter. "Okay… this place looks like a watchmaker's nightmare. Please tell me we're not about to fight clocks."

Lyra's voice was solemn, her silver hair flowing like moonlight. "The Trial of Time. Here, you must face not monsters, not shadows, but destiny itself. Time tests patience, endurance, and the truth that even heroes cannot escape the clock."

Kael groaned. "Fantastic. So basically, I'm about to get lectured by a calendar."

The chamber stirred. The clocks ticked louder, the hourglasses spilled faster, the sundials shifted. Time itself warped, stretching and compressing. Kael stumbled, his body slowing, his breath heavy.

Kael muttered, "Great. Now I'm stuck in slow motion."

Lyra's voice was calm. "Do not resist. The trial bends time to test your will. Endure it."

Kael smirked weakly. "Yeah, well, I've been late my whole life. Guess I'm prepared."

Suddenly, figures emerged from the clocks—guardians forged from time itself. Their bodies shimmered, shifting between ages. One was young, swift, striking fast. Another was old, heavy, moving slow but powerful. A third flickered, existing only half the time.

Kael froze. "Oh great. Boss fight with Father Time and his cousins."

The young guardian spoke. "You are too slow. You will never keep up."

Kael swung, sparks flying. "Yeah, well, I'm lazy, not slow."

The old guardian rumbled. "You are too weak. Age will break you."

Kael gritted his teeth. "Figures. Even time thinks I'm useless."

The flickering guardian whispered. "You are forgotten. You will fade."

Kael hesitated, unsettled. Lyra's voice cut through. "Strike him. Fading is the most dangerous time."

Kael swung, shattering the flickering guardian.

The battle raged. Kael fought fiercely, his Trialblade glowing brighter. He struck the young guardian, shattering its speed. He cut through the old guardian, dissolving its weight.

The chamber trembled, the clocks cracking. Light flared, shattering the guardians. Silence returned.

Kael collapsed, panting. "I swear, this realm is trying to kill me with cardio and therapy."

Lyra approached, her eyes softened. "You endured. Time accepts you."

Kael smirked weakly. "Yeah? Maybe next time, the trial can just send me a reminder instead of clones."

Lyra shook her head, though a faint smile betrayed her amusement. "You complain, yet you endure. That is strength."

Kael chuckled. "Or stupidity. Still hard to tell the difference."
