Chapter 16 - The Man Who Shouldn’t Be Here

The door creaked wider.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Every step that followed sounded too loud in the quiet room.

Zayden's body tensed instantly.

Not fear.

Readiness.

Aria hadn't moved.

Not even a breath.

That was what bothered him.

Because she always moved.

The figure stepped into the dim light.

Tall.

Dressed in dark grey.

Hair pulled back neatly, not a strand out of place.

Gloves.

Always gloves.

His presence didn't feel like power.

It felt like… control.

Absolute control.

His gaze swept the room once.

Lucien.

Zayden.

Then—

Aria.

It stopped there.

Softened.

Just slightly.

"Well," he said calmly,

"I was right."

A pause.

"You are here."

Aria's voice came out low.

Sharp.

"…Kael."

The name dropped like a stone into still water.

Zayden's eyes narrowed.

Another one.

Another past.

Lucien leaned against the wall, watching with quiet amusement.

"Oh, this just keeps getting better."

Kael ignored him.

Of course he did.

His attention stayed on Aria.

"You disappeared again," he said.

Not angry.

Not relieved.

Just… stating a fact.

Aria's expression didn't change.

"You weren't supposed to find this place."

Kael stepped closer.

Each movement precise.

Measured.

"I wasn't supposed to," he agreed.

A beat.

"But I did."

Zayden shifted slightly.

Putting himself just enough between them to matter.

Kael's gaze flicked to him.

Brief.

Assessing.

Then back to Aria.

"So this is the one."

Zayden didn't like the tone.

Or the implication.

"Got a problem with that?" he asked.

Kael's eyes returned to him.

Calm.

Unreadable.

"No."

A pause.

"Not yet."

Lucien chuckled softly.

"Oh, I really like him."

Aria took a step forward.

Placing herself between them now.

"Why are you here?"

Kael looked at her.

Really looked.

Taking in every detail like he was confirming something.

"Because the system is reacting," he said.

A beat.

"And you're always at the center of it."

Silence.

Zayden's gaze sharpened.

"You're part of it."

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"Define part."

"That's a yes," Lucien muttered.

Kael didn't deny it.

Didn't confirm it.

He simply looked back at Aria.

"They've already marked you again."

Aria's jaw tightened.

"I know."

Zayden frowned.

"Marked?"

Kael's gaze flicked to him.

"You don't tell him much, do you?"

Zayden stepped forward.

"Tell me yourself."

A pause.

Kael considered him for a second.

Then—

"The Order doesn't just track anomalies," he said calmly.

"They classify them."

Zayden crossed his arms.

"And?"

Kael's voice didn't change.

"You were a variable."

A beat.

"Now you're a threat."

That didn't surprise him.

Not really.

"And her?" Zayden asked.

Kael's eyes returned to Aria.

"She's always been something worse."

Silence.

Heavy.

Lucien let out a soft breath.

"That sounds accurate."

Aria ignored him.

"Why are you really here?" she asked.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

his gaze dropped.

To Zayden's hand.

To the mark.

To the new symbol.

For the first time—

his composure shifted.

Just slightly.

"…That's not possible," he said.

Zayden noticed.

Of course he did.

"What is it?"

Kael looked up again.

This time—

more focused.

More serious.

"That mark," he said,

"shouldn't exist outside the original system."

Lucien straightened.

"Oh, now that's interesting."

Aria's eyes darkened.

"You've seen it before."

Kael didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Once."

Zayden's gaze sharpened.

"And?"

Kael held his gaze.

"It ended with the system collapsing in an entire sector."

Silence slammed into the room.

Lucien blinked.

"…You're joking."

Kael didn't smile.

"I don't joke about system failures."

Zayden looked at his hand again.

At the symbol.

At the path getting more dangerous with every step.

"…Good," he said quietly.

Aria turned sharply toward him.

"That's not good."

Zayden met her gaze.

"It means this matters."

A pause.

"It means we're not just reacting anymore."

Lucien laughed under his breath.

"I admire the optimism."

Kael studied him again.

Longer this time.

"You don't understand what you're carrying," he said.

Zayden's expression didn't change.

"Then explain it."

Kael's voice dropped slightly.

"That mark doesn't just connect you to contracts."

A beat.

"It gives you influence over them."

Silence.

Even Lucien went still.

Aria's breath caught—

just slightly.

Zayden noticed.

"…Influence how?"

Kael's answer came clean.

"You can alter them."

That changed everything.

Zayden's mind moved fast.

Too fast.

"If I can alter them—"

Aria cut in immediately.

"You can destroy them."

A pause.

"And everything tied to them."

Kael nodded once.

"That includes people."

The weight of that settled.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Lucien exhaled slowly.

"Well, that's catastrophic."

Zayden didn't look away from Kael.

"And you came here to tell us that?"

"No."

A pause.

"I came to stop it."

The room went still.

Zayden's eyes darkened.

"Try."

Kael didn't move.

Didn't react.

"I'm not here to fight you," he said calmly.

A beat.

"I'm here to make sure you don't reach the third stage."

That word again.

Stage.

Zayden's jaw tightened.

"Too late."

Kael's gaze flicked to Aria.

"Not yet."

Silence.

Then—

"Leave him out of this," Aria said.

Her voice had dropped.

Sharp.

Protective.

Kael looked at her.

Something unreadable passed through his eyes.

"You're still doing that," he said quietly.

"Standing between danger and someone who doesn't understand it."

Zayden stepped forward.

"I understand enough."

Kael's gaze shifted back to him.

"Do you?"

A pause.

"Then understand this."

The air changed.

Subtle.

Controlled.

The kind of shift that didn't explode—

but pressed in.

Zayden felt it immediately.

Different from hunters.

Different from watchers.

This was… refined.

Precise.

Kael lifted one hand slightly.

Not attacking.

Just—

demonstrating.

The mark on Zayden's hand flickered.

Then—

stilled.

Completely.

Zayden's eyes widened.

"…You just—"

"Suppressed it," Kael said calmly.

Lucien straightened.

"…Okay, now that's impressive."

Aria's expression darkened.

"You shouldn't be able to do that."

Kael looked at her.

"I told you."

A pause.

"I'm part of the system."

Silence fell again.

Heavy.

Zayden stared at his hand.

No pulse.

No darkness.

Nothing.

For the first time since the contract—

he was completely disconnected.

And he hated it.

Kael lowered his hand.

The mark pulsed back to life instantly.

Zayden exhaled sharply.

"…Don't do that again."

Kael's expression didn't change.

"Then don't give me a reason to."

That was a threat.

Calm.

Measured.

Real.

Aria stepped between them again.

"This isn't your decision."

Kael looked at her.

Soft.

But unyielding.

"It is if the system decides it is."

Silence.

Then—

a faint sound echoed outside.

Not footsteps.

Not movement.

Something else.

Zayden felt it first.

The thread—

snapped back into place.

Hard.

Violent.

Stronger than before.

His head snapped toward the door.

"They're here again."

Kael's gaze sharpened.

"…No."

A pause.

"This is different."

Lucien's smile faded completely.

"Oh, I don't like that tone."

The air outside shifted.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Like something massive had just turned its attention toward them.

Aria's voice dropped.

"…We don't stay."

Zayden didn't argue.

"Agreed."

Kael looked toward the door.

Then back at them.

"For once," he said quietly,

"we're all on the same side."

Lucien exhaled slowly.

"Well."

A pause.

"That's terrifying."

The walls creaked.

The gate outside rattled violently.

Something was coming.

And this time—

it wasn't watching.
