Chapter 29 - Chapter 28: The Sovereign’s Ransom

The silence in the grand ballroom was no longer empty; it was heavy, saturated with the metallic scent of spilled mana and the ozone of the Abyss. Lord Valerius Luxmore lay curled at Arain's feet, a shattered mirror of the man who, only minutes ago, had been laughing at the world. The "Sun-Shield," the pride of the Luxmore family's defensive arts, was nothing but flickering golden embers on the floor.

Arain didn't look at the cowering noble. Instead, he turned his gaze toward the shadows in the corner. "Voros, the guests are getting restless. Remind them of their manners."

The Abyssal Sentinel didn't make a sound, but his shadow expanded, crawling up the walls and sealing every window. The nobles who had been trying to sneak toward the balconies froze as the darkness touched their silk boots, freezing them in place.

[Fear Level: Critical (88%).]

Arain walked toward the throne-like chair Valerius had occupied. He sat down, crossing his small legs with a cold elegance that made the high-ranking merchants and lords in the room tremble.

"Kael," Arain called out.

The servant stepped out from behind a pillar, his eyes glowing with the violet light of the Shadow Map. "Yes, Master?"

"Read the ledgers," Arain commanded. "I want to know exactly how much blood was sucked from the North to build this... golden cage."

Kael pulled out a thick, leather-bound book he had retrieved from Valerius's private study. His voice was steady, amplified by the silence of the room. "In the last five years, Lord Valerius has redirected 40% of the North Estate's agricultural taxes. He has sold three ancient Luxmore mana-veins to the Southern Trade Union. And most recently, he accepted a bribe of 50,000 Imperial Gold Coins to report Arain Luxmore's 'accidental death' during the winter."

A collective gasp echoed through the hall. Valerius's face turned from grey to a ghostly white.

Arain leaned forward, his chin resting on his hand. his eyes, twin abyssal pits, locked onto Valerius. "50,000 gold pieces for my life? You sold me quite cheap, Cousin. I feel... insulted."

"It—it wasn't my idea!" Valerius shrieked, clutching the hem of Arain's cloak. "The Duke! Your father! He whispered it was for the best! He said the 'Cursed Prince' was a stain on the lineage! I was just—"

"You were just a vulture," Arain interrupted, his voice a whisper that felt like a blade. "And vultures don't lead. They eat the dead. But as you can see... I am very much alive."

[Insight: Target is hiding the location of the 'Luxmore Heirloom'.]

Arain's smile widened, but it didn't reach his eyes. He reached into the air, and the Void-Eater's Shard materialized in his hand, humming with a hungry, violet light.

"The inheritance, Valerius. Where is the 'Midnight Tear'?"

The Midnight Tear—the legendary jewel that allowed a Luxmore to communicate with the spirits of the Abyss. It was the artifact Arain needed to fully unlock the Shadow Armory's true potential.

"I... I don't have it! It was lost!" Valerius lied, his mana core flickering with the tell-tale sign of deception.

Arain didn't argue. He simply pointed the Shard at the nearest guard—a man who was already unconscious. The blade didn't touch the man, but a thread of black mana pulled a translucent, screaming form out of his chest.

[Warning: Incomplete Soul. Thrall will be unstable.]

The nobles screamed as they watched Arain pull the very essence of a man out. The shadowy form knelt before Arain, hollow and obedient.

"My patience is a limited resource, Cousin," Arain said, his voice dripping with boredom. "Every second you waste, I will extract the soul of one of your 'guests'. By the end of the night, Grey-Harbor will be a city of empty shells. Shall we start with the daughter of the Merchant King over there?"

He pointed the Shard toward a terrified young girl in a blue dress.

"NO! STOP!" Valerius crumbled. "It's behind the painting! The portrait of the First Duke! There's a mana-locked safe! Please... just don't kill me!"

Arain gestured to Voros. The Sentinel moved with a blur of darkness, his massive scythe tearing the portrait of the First Duke Luxmore from the wall. Behind it lay a safe made of 'Holy Silver'. Voros didn't bother with a key; he simply punched his fist through the silver, the Abyssal Rot corroding the holy metal in seconds.

He returned with a small, velvet box. Inside lay a black diamond that seemed to swallow the light around it. The Midnight Tear.

[Item Acquired: Midnight Tear (S-Rank Catalyst).]

Arain felt a surge of cold power rush through his veins. His mana capacity doubled, and the runes on his arms began to glow with a permanent violet hue. He stood up, the Midnight Tear floating around him like a dark moon.

"Now," Arain said, looking at the assembled nobles. "The banquet is over. But the debt is not. Kael, distribute the contracts."

Kael moved through the room, handing out pieces of black parchment to the trembling lords.

"These are Soul-Bound Oaths," Arain explained, his voice echoing with the authority of the Shadow Monarch's Charisma. "Sign them, and your wealth, your information, and your loyalty belong to me. Refuse... and Voros will show you what lies beyond the veil of death."

One by one, the nobles of Grey-Harbor signed. They had no choice. They were witnessing the rise of a new power, one that the Empire's Sun could never reach.

Finally, Arain looked back at Valerius. The man was a broken mess, stripped of his pride and his power.

"As for you, Cousin," Arain said, the Void-Eater's Shard hovering near Valerius's throat. "I have a special role for you. You will remain the 'Lord' of Grey-Harbor in name. You will continue to collect taxes and host parties. But every copper, every secret, and every word you hear will come to me. You are my first 'Living Shadow'."

[Skill Active: Puppeteer's Mark.]

[Target: Lord Valerius Luxmore – Status: Subjugated.]

Arain walked toward the exit, the doors swinging open as the shadows retreated. Kael and Voros followed him, the black carriage waiting in the rain.

"Master," Kael asked as they stepped outside. "What is our next move? The Duke will surely hear of the 'incident' at the banquet."

Arain climbed into the carriage, the Midnight Tear glowing in his hand. "Let him hear. Let the whole Empire tremble. I have the port, I have the gold, and now I have the Tear. It's time we return to the North... and turn that ruin into a fortress that will make the Capital look like a hovel."

He looked back at the Gilded Manor, which was now silhouetted against the dark sky.

"The Villain's Regret?" Arain whispered, a cold, dark laugh escaping his lips. "The only regret I have is that I didn't start the harvest sooner."
