Chapter 34 - Chapter 34:Battle of self

The wind picked up across the savanna, bending the grass in violent waves.

Devin barely had time to steady his footing before the feral werewolf lunged again.. faster this time.

Too fast.

Claws tore across his side, sending him spinning.

He hit the ground hard, breath exploding from his lungs. Pain burned through his ribs.

The beast didn't pause.

It pounced, jaws snapping inches from his throat. Devin shoved his forearm into its mouth instinctivel.

Teeth sank in. He grunted, forcing the head away with raw desperation.

"Ghh... !"

The werewolf thrashed, trying to rip his arm off. Its strength was overwhelming.

Devin's boots dug into the dirt as he pushed, muscles shaking.

He twisted sideways at the last second, rolling free as the beast's bite snapped shut on empty air.

He scrambled up, breathing hard, blood dripping from his arm.

"You really don't hold back…" he muttered.

The feral version circled, hunched low, shoulders twitching, saliva dripping. Its eyes weren't just angry, they were hungry.

It charged again, zig-zagging unpredictably.

Devin tried to sidestep.. too slow.

The impact slammed him backward. They rolled together through the grass. The werewolf hammered him with heavy blows, claw after claw.

Devin blocked what he could, but several strikes got through, leaving deep cuts.

The beast grabbed him by the shoulder and hurled him.

He crashed into a lone rock formation, cracks spiderwebbing across the surface. His vision blurred.

"Focus…" he whispered to himself.

The werewolf howled and sprinted again, not giving him a second.

Devin forced himself upright just as the creature leapt. Instead of retreating, he stepped forward.

He ducked under the swipe.

Drove his shoulder into the beast's torso.

They collided, tumbling again. Devin wrapped an arm around its neck, trying to restrain it.

The werewolf bit backward, snapping dangerously close to his face. He tightened his grip.

"You're… not… in control…" he growled.

The beast slammed him into the ground repeatedly, breaking his hold. It rose and stomped down. Devin rolled aside, barely avoiding being crushed.

The fight grew more brutal.

Every second the feral version pressed harder, faster, more violent. It didn't tire. It didn't think. It just attacked endlessly.

Devin staggered, exhaustion creeping in. "This… is what I've been acting like…" he realized aloud.

The werewolf charged again, claws aimed at his chest. This time Devin didn't dodge, he caught the wrist mid-swing. Pain shot through him, but he held on.

They locked eyes.

Wild fury versus controlled determination.

The beast tried to overpower him, but Devin shifted his stance, redirecting the force.

He twisted the arm and shoved the creature past him, sending it stumbling forward.

It roared, more enraged than ever.

Now the attacks came in a frenzy.. claw, bite, slam, swipe, a relentless storm.

Devin retreated step by step, blocking, redirecting, taking hits but staying upright.

He was learning.

Adapting.

Controlling.

The werewolf lunged again, Devin stepped inside its guard and slammed his forehead into its snout.

The beast recoiled slightly. Devin followed with a shove, creating distance.

Both stood, breathing heavily.

The tension thickened.

The feral version crouched lower, preparing something bigger.. a full primal charge.

Devin wiped blood from his eyes, stance steady now.

"Alright…" he said quietly. "If you're my beast… then I'm your master."

The werewolf roared and launched forward.

Devin stepped into the attack.

The clash shook the savanna.

The impact echoed across the savanna like thunder.

The feral werewolf crashed into Devin with full force but this time, Devin didn't get thrown.

His feet dug into the dirt, legs shaking, yet holding. For the first time, he absorbed the charge without collapsing.

The beast snarled in confusion.

Devin pushed back.

Slowly.

The werewolf's claws scraped against his shoulders, drawing blood, but Devin kept advancing.

Every step forward felt heavier, like pushing through invisible resistance.. not physical, but mental.

He wasn't just fighting strength.

He was fighting instinct itself.

"You're… not me," Devin growled.

He twisted his body, redirecting the beast's momentum and throwing it sideways.

The werewolf rolled across the grass, then sprang up immediately but Devin was already moving.

He closed the distance first.

A straight punch slammed into the creature's chest. The beast staggered. Devin followed with another shove, forcing it back.

His movements were still human, but more confident, more controlled.

The werewolf attacked wildly, but now Devin saw the openings.

He sidestepped, grabbed its arm, and used its own lunge to flip it over his shoulder.

It hit the ground hard.

Devin stepped back, breathing heavy, but steadier than before.

His wounds still hurt, yet something inside him felt… aligned.

The beast roared and lunged again.

Devin blocked, redirected, countered.

Each exchange, he improved.

Each second, his fear faded.

Each movement became more deliberate.

The feral version began to lose rhythm. Its attacks remained powerful, but predictable.

Devin ducked under a swipe, drove his elbow into its ribs, then shoved it away.

The werewolf stumbled.

For the first time… it hesitated.

Devin noticed.

He advanced calmly now.

"You're just rage," he said. "And rage burns out."

The beast roared louder, charging in a reckless frenzy..

Devin planted his foot and pivoted, letting the attack pass, then slammed both hands into its back, forcing it into the ground.

Dust exploded.

He pinned it momentarily but the creature bucked violently, throwing him off. They separated again.

But the difference was clear now.

Devin stood straighter.

The werewolf panted not tired physically, but unstable. Its movements less coordinated.

Devin stepped forward again, this time without hesitation.

The beast swung.

He caught the wrist.

Twisted.

Kicked its leg out.

The werewolf dropped to one knee.

Devin shoved it back.

The balance of the fight had shifted.

The savanna wind slowed, as if the realm itself recognized the change.

Devin's breathing steadied, eyes focused. He wasn't just surviving anymore.

He was winning.

The feral version roared in frustration and launched one last full-power charge... reckless, all-in.

Devin didn't retreat.

He stepped forward.

The final charge never truly landed.

Instead of striking, Devin caught the werewolf's shoulders.

The beast snapped its jaws inches from his face, claws digging into his arms. They locked together, neither giving ground.

For a moment… nothing moved.

Their breathing synchronized.

Hot, ragged, identical.

The feral werewolf growled but the sound slowly changed. Less rage… more confusion.

Devin stared into its glowing eyes and, for the first time, didn't see an enemy.

He saw himself.

Every surge of anger. Every instinct to kill. Every moment he'd let rage guide him. It wasn't separate.. it was part of him.

"You're not just a beast…" Devin whispered.

The werewolf's grip loosened slightly.

"You're my instincts… my strength… my survival."

The creature's snarl faded into a low rumble.

The tension between them shifted. The savanna wind died completely.

The grass stilled, as if the entire realm was holding its breath.

The beast didn't attack.

Devin didn't push.

Their foreheads slowly touched.

A pulse rippled outward.

Memories flashed, Devin running wild, hunting, roaring, losing control. Then other moments... thinking, adapting, protecting himself, learning. Both sides overlapping, blending.

Emotion surged through him.

Rage… fear… determination… control.

Not opposites.

Complements.

The werewolf's form began to soften, its violent movements slowing.

Its glowing eyes dimmed slightly, no longer wild but focused. Devin felt his own heartbeat syncing with it.

"You don't need to dominate me," he said quietly.

The beast's claws retracted slightly.

"And I don't need to suppress you."

Their bodies began to glow faintly, one human, one beast... outlines blurring at the edges. Energy flowed between them like two currents merging into one river.

The werewolf leaned forward.

Devin didn't resist.

Their forms overlapped.

Fur dissolved into light. Human skin shimmered. The two shapes merged gradually, not violently, but naturally.. like instinct and thought finally aligning.

The glow intensified.

Inside the merging, Devin felt clarity. The savage hunger was still there… but now guided.

The rage remained… but sharpened. The predator instinct no longer controlled him.. it answered him.

The last echo of the werewolf's voice rumbled in his mind:

We hunt together.

Devin replied internally:

We control together.

The light collapsed inward.

One figure remained.

Devin stood alone on the savanna.. still human, but different.

His posture more grounded, his eyes calmer… yet deeper. A faint golden glow flickered in his pupils before fading.

He exhaled slowly.

No more chaotic instinct.

No more internal conflict.

Just balance.

The savanna wind returned, gently moving the grass.

Somewhere in the distance, the presence of the mysterious woman lingered, watching silently.

Devin clenched his fist, feeling something new.

Not more power.

Better control.

And somewhere far away, in the physical world, his unconscious body shifted slightly... as if responding to the harmony achieved within.
