Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: “The Scandal That Broke Silence”

Morning didn't feel like morning that day.

It felt like aftermath.

The city woke up like always—cars moving, people rushing, sunlight spreading across buildings—but somewhere beneath that normalcy…

Something had shifted.

Han Soo-min sat quietly on the edge of her bed.

She hadn't changed.

Hadn't slept.

Hadn't even moved much.

Her hands rested in her lap.

Still.

Unsteady.

Last night replayed in her mind like a broken film.

The men.

The chase.

The fear.

And then—

Him.

The way he fought.

The way he didn't stop.

The way he almost…

Her fingers tightened.

"…He would've killed him."

The realization hit harder now.

Because it was real.

Not a story.

Not imagination.

Kang Jae-hyun wasn't just dangerous.

He was someone who could cross the line—

And not come back.

A soft knock broke the silence.

"Soo-min?"

The voice of her landlady.

Old.

Gentle.

Concerned.

"You didn't go to school yet."

Soo-min forced her voice out.

"…I'm going."

But she didn't move.

Her reflection in the cracked mirror looked unfamiliar.

Her eyes…

Were tired.

Afraid.

"…What am I doing?" she whispered.

She stood slowly.

Changed.

Grabbed her bag.

And stepped outside.

Seorin High.

The moment she entered—

She knew.

Everyone knew.

Not just whispers this time.

Not just rumors.

Fear.

"Police came last night…"

"They found people unconscious…"

"Blood everywhere…"

"It's connected to Jae-hyun…"

Her steps slowed.

Police…?

Her chest tightened.

Was he—

"…You're late."

She froze.

That voice.

She turned slowly.

Kang Jae-hyun stood there.

Perfect.

Untouched.

As if last night never happened.

But his eyes—

Still carried something dark.

"…You came," he said.

Her throat felt dry.

"…Of course I did."

Silence.

They stood there.

Facing each other.

A thousand unspoken things between them.

"…Are you okay?" he asked.

She almost laughed.

"…You're asking me that?"

A pause.

"…You're not hurt."

"That's not what I meant."

Her voice trembled.

"…You almost killed someone."

Silence.

The hallway seemed to disappear.

"…They deserved it."

Her breath caught.

"That's not the point!"

For the first time—

Her voice rose.

Students around them froze.

"…That's exactly the point."

His tone was calm.

Too calm.

"…You don't understand."

"Then make me understand!" she snapped.

A long silence followed.

Then—

"…This is my world."

His voice dropped.

"People like them don't stop."

A step closer.

"They don't learn."

Another step.

"They don't fear."

Now—

He was right in front of her.

"…Unless you make them."

Her heart pounded.

"…That's not justice."

"It's survival."

Silence.

That word again.

Survival.

"…And what about you?" she whispered.

A pause.

"…What about me?"

"…Who saves you?"

That question—

Hit deeper than anything before.

For a moment—

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

Then—

"…I don't need saving."

Lie.

She could see it now.

Clearer than ever.

"…You do."

Silence.

But before anything more could be said—

"Jae-hyun."

Another voice interrupted.

A teacher.

Strict.

Nervous.

"…The principal wants to see you."

The hallway fell silent again.

Everyone watching.

Waiting.

Jae-hyun didn't react immediately.

Then—

"…I'll come."

He turned.

Walked away.

Without looking back.

The principal's office.

The air was heavy.

Two police officers stood inside.

The principal wiped sweat from his forehead.

"…Kang Jae-hyun," one officer said calmly,

"We need to ask you a few questions."

Jae-hyun stood still.

Unbothered.

"…Go ahead."

"Where were you last night?"

"…Out."

"With whom?"

"…Alone."

The officer watched him carefully.

"…We found three men badly injured."

Silence.

"…And?"

"They mentioned a student."

A pause.

"…You."

The room felt tense.

The principal looked terrified.

Jae-hyun's expression didn't change.

"…Do you have proof?"

The officer narrowed his eyes.

"…Not yet."

A small pause.

"…Then we're done here."

He turned.

"Wait—"

But the officer stopped.

"…We'll be watching you."

Jae-hyun glanced back slightly.

"…Do that."

And walked out.

Meanwhile—

Soo-min sat alone in the classroom.

Her hands trembled slightly.

Police…

This is real.

Not just danger.

Not just fear.

But consequences.

Legal.

Serious.

"…This is too much."

Her voice broke slightly.

She stood up.

Walked out.

Without thinking.

She found herself on the rooftop.

The same place.

Where everything started.

The wind blew softly.

But her chest felt tight.

"…I can't do this."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I can't live like this…"

Her voice cracked.

"I'm scared…"

Finally—

She said it.

Out loud.

The truth.

"I'm scared of him…"

Silence answered.

"…But I'm also scared without him."

That was worse.

Much worse.

The door opened.

She didn't turn.

"…You're here."

His voice.

Quiet.

"…I needed air."

A pause.

"…Or distance?"

Her breath hitched.

"…Both."

Silence.

He walked closer.

Stopped beside her.

Not too close.

Not too far.

"…You're afraid."

"…Yes."

She didn't lie this time.

"…Of me?"

A pause.

"…A little."

That answer—

Was honest.

And it hurt.

Even if he didn't show it.

"…You should be."

Her heart clenched.

"…But I don't want to be."

Silence.

That sentence—

Changed something.

"…Then don't."

"…It's not that simple."

"I can make it simple."

She turned to him.

"…How?"

A long pause.

Then—

"…Stay with me."

Again.

That offer.

That demand.

That promise.

"…And everything else?"

"…I'll handle it."

"…That's exactly what scares me."

Silence.

For the first time—

Jae-hyun didn't have control over the situation.

"…I don't want to lose myself," she whispered.

That—

Was the real fear.

Not death.

Not pain.

But becoming part of his world.

"…You won't."

"…How do you know?"

A pause.

"…Because I won't let you."

Her eyes softened slightly.

"…You say that like you control everything."

"…I try."

"…And when you fail?"

Silence.

No answer.

Because he knew—

He already had.

Far away—

The man watched again.

"…She's breaking."

A slow smile formed.

"…Good."

A pause.

"…Push harder."

Back on the rooftop—

Two people stood.

On the edge of something dangerous.

Something fragile.

Something inevitable.

"…Jae-hyun."

"…What?"

A small pause.

"…If I stay…"

His eyes focused on her.

"…Then don't lie to me anymore."

Silence.

A long one.

Then—

"…Fine."

It wasn't easy for him.

But he said it anyway.

"…I'll tell you the truth."

That promise—

Was heavier than anything before.

Because truth…

In his world—

Was the most dangerous thing of all.
