She looked into his eyes for a long while but she didn't know what to do, her feet had turned to ash and the rest of her body followed, she stretched out her hand towards him and he stretched his out and Well and when their fingers touched, hers turned to ash.
Their sequence of events made Lucas fall to the floor, he looked at his hands and some of the ash was on his fingers.
Tears dropped from.his eyes to the floor, his heart beat so fast that he thought it would jump out of his chest.
The wisp of smoke came at him, Lucas had no will to live anymore, witnessing her death was more devastating than hearing about it and now he just wanted to die.
The smoke charged at him with full force, Lucas braced for his death, he closed his eyes prepared to join Sarah in the afterlife, but he was never hit. He opened his eyes and saw a woman standing in front of him.
She had long black hair that reached her waist, her jacket flowed all the way down to her ankles, her black boots held her in place as she wrestled with the creature's body.
Her entire body was covered with Ruin energy, she pushed back the wisp and then turned to Lucas, she held him by the collar of his cloak and then dragged him out of the building. She threw him on the floor and then stood in front of him with her arms crossed and her eyes showing disappointment.
"What the hell is wrong with you? Do you want to die?" She asked. Lucas stared at her for a while, she had a beautiful face, her skin looked like that of a porcelain doll and her chest was… he pushed those thoughts from his mind and then answered her question:
"Um, I'm sorry."
She saw where his eyes were a moment ago and then started laughing. Lucas looked at her strangely, was she crazy? Did she think that this was a funny situation?
"Sorry about that, I saw what you were looking at. Were you admiring my beauty?" She asked.
Lucas turned away in embarrassment and then she laughed again. "Well, it's not nice to look at old ladies that way."
Old ladies? Lucas instantly knew who this was, this was Deborah's grandmother, but she looked so young, like a woman in her early twenties.
"Old lady huh?" Lucas said with an awkward smile. Why was she this young? Did she have some kind of ability that made her age backwards?
Noticing his confusion, she tapped his shoulder and said with a huge smile:
"You don't believe me eh? Well it's true, I have a granddaughter and I'm seventy-five years old currently."
Seventy-five!? Lucas almost fainted from the little bit of information she just gave him but he had to compose himself and focus on fighting that thing.
"Look kid, I saw what happened and I'm sorry I wasn't fast enough to save her. But I'm here now, and no one else is dying, not on my watch." She declared smiling, she offered her hand to him which he took and she dragged him to his feet.
"Oh! Before I forget my name's Clara. Clara Lindenheart. What's your name kiddo?" She asked.
"My name's Lucas." He replied and then they walked out, Lucas stared in awe as he saw the other rankers that she worked with, they were the same people who stopped this horrible abomination.
Lucas's eyes met with Deborah's, the young girl was staring at her grandmother with respect and awe in her eyes.
'She must have seen something.' Lucas denoted and then walked over to them. David was fine now, his body still weak but according to him, he could manage.
Karl had a look on his face that Lucas hadn't seen before, it was a mix of anxiety and surprise; what was he thinking?
The other members of Clara's cohort were already fighting the World Eater and they were holding their own, each and everyone of them covered in Ruin energy, the had with them armor and weapons which did no damage against the creature's incorporeal body, the only place they could deal actual damage with their weapons was its cores.
The Cursed Creatures had six ranks, Aberrants being the lowest and Devils being the highest rank. The Aberrants and Dreadforms had no cores, hence why Ravencroft died so easily but the Calamities, Catastrophes, World Eaters and Devils all had cores which one had to destroy before they could be killed.
"So, I see you kids are alive, that's nice," she pointed at Lucas, "this one here wanted to let that thing kill him."
David's eyes flared up, he had a look of anger on his face. Lucas noticed this and tried to calm the situation:
"That's not important now, what's important is that we kill that."
Lucas believed these words as well, Sarah dying in front of him wouldn't change anything. People did say "seeing is believing", now that he knew she was dead to him she could rest. He has gotten over her death before and he would get over it again, what matters now was not her but going home which was the entire reason they came here in the first place.
"Lucas here is right, we need to focus on that." Clara said, looking at her comrades fighting against the humongous creature in the sky.
Lucas walked up to Deborah and asked:
"What did you see?"
"I knew she was strong but I didn't know she was this strong." Deborah replied, her voice and her hands shaking with excitement. Lucas knew she had looked at her grandmother's Writ interface with her ability and had seen something incredible.
"What's that?" Lucas asked yet again, now he himself was intrigued and wanted to know what she saw.
"My grandmother is ruined." Deborah revealed.
Ruined!? That was the third highest rank that humans could achieve, and there was someone of that level here.
"I see," Lucas noted, "no wonder she was able to grab the World Eater's body as if it was tangible."
Deborah's eyes widened, she started grinning as if she had just solved the most difficult mystery in the world.
"That's only part of it, I saw her title and I believe that's the reason she was able to hold that thing.' She said,
"And what might that be?" Lucas asked.
"Messenger Of Destruction."
