Chapter 296: The Illuminati and the X-Men Arrive
Though Iron Man's appearance gave ordinary Big Apple civilians a jolt of hope, the sheer number of Chitauri forces proved overwhelming — their weaponry was frighteningly advanced too, and a substantial wave of them broke through Iron Man's line and the rest of the city's defenses to pour straight into the heart of the bustling metropolis.
The Big Apple plunged instantly into chaos. Explosions rippled across the skyline one after another, fireballs billowing up into the sky, buildings collapsing into rubble under the crushing force of the assault.
Smoke and the acrid smell of ash filled the air. On the streets below, people screamed and scattered in every direction, desperately searching for anywhere that might pass for safety.
The federal government moved fast — scrambling wave after wave of fighter jets, mobilizing tanks and armored vehicles on the ground, all charging toward the alien warships — but none of it did much to steady the nerves of a city already gripped by pure panic.
That panic only deepened when a Leviathan warship, easily a hundred meters long, emerged from the black hole. Its sheer bulk blotted out the sky over all of Manhattan, plunging the whole borough into darkness.
The energy pulsing off that ship alone was enough to terrify anyone who felt it — like some herald of annihilation, capable of leveling the entire city on a whim. Whether they stood in the Big Apple itself or watched the footage stream live from somewhere else in the world, everyone watching felt the same creeping sense that the end of the world had finally arrived.
Amid all this chaos and terror, the FBI and military weren't just fighting off alien invaders — they were also having to contend with opportunists using the mayhem as cover. Terrorists, criminals, looters — all seizing the moment to loot, sabotage, and kill, adding a whole extra layer of danger and complexity to an already impossible situation.
"First time I've ever seen a war on this kind of scale," Ethan mused, standing on the rooftop of Fisk Tower, watching the spectacle unfold.
He'd watched the Chitauri invasion play out in movies plenty of times before without feeling much of anything. But witnessing thousands of real warships and aliens actually descending on the Big Apple in the flesh — that was something else entirely.
"Save the poetry for later — get over here and help," Ethan's earpiece crackled. Tony, mid-fight against the Chitauri horde overhead.
If there was one person throwing himself into this fight with everything he had, it was Tony — most of his business empire was rooted right here in this city. Rich as he was, if the Big Apple actually fell, Stark Industries' entire home base went down with it.
Even with his upgraded armor, there was no way he could hold back an entire alien invasion single-handedly.
"Relax. Your backup's already here." Ethan's gaze drifted out toward the skyline, where a formation was closing in fast.
The Illuminati — deployed in full force this time, minus their Atlantean king. Reed. Human Torch. Invisible Woman. Black Bolt. Falcon.
With the Illuminati's arrival, the battle escalated fast.
They tore into the Chitauri ranks while simultaneously sweeping civilians to safety along the way.
Reed, in particular, used his powers to save people while never missing an opportunity to promote the Illuminati itself — determined to make sure the entire world learned the name of this mysterious, powerful organization.
Meanwhile, across the city, another set of unusual figures slipped quietly into the chaos.
The X-Men. Representing the mutant community, their arrival breathed a fresh jolt of energy into the fight.
Every member brought a distinct power to bear — Storm, Cyclops, Iceman, Jean, and more.
Storm's power struck like nature itself unleashed — in an instant, she whipped up a violent windstorm powerful enough to shatter the momentum of the Chitauri's advance entirely.
Her long hair whipped wildly in the wind, like a banner flying in the heart of the storm, leading her teammates into a furious counterattack.
Iceman brought his own particular brand of destruction — freezing enemies solid one after another, a light flick of his fingers enough to condense the surrounding air into thick walls of ice, carving out safe escape routes for fleeing civilians.
Cyclops, meanwhile, fired beams from his eyes like twin laser cannons, blinding bursts of light that tore straight through enemy armor with lethal precision.
Quietly, methodically, they cut through the Chitauri ranks while covering civilian evacuations. None of them announced who they were — they didn't need to. Their powers alone were distinctive enough that any onlooker could pick them out instantly.
Their unmistakable presence gave the terrified civilians below a real spark of hope.
With both super-teams now in the fight, the Chitauri advance actually ground to a halt, if only briefly.
"Whoa, incredible — is that what superheroes actually look like?! I know one team's the X-Men, they're mutants — but who's the other group?"
"Heard someone call them the Illuminati — apparently some federal government-affiliated superhero task force!"
"The mutants all seem like good people! I heard they all moved to Hell's Kitchen! That ice-freezing power is unbelievably cool!"
"Hey, I know that Iceman guy — I saw him race in the Hell's Kitchen Grand Prix!"
"Looks like we might actually be saved — didn't even need Ethan from Hell's Kitchen after all!"
"Bullshit. Most of these mutants live in Hell's Kitchen these days. There's no way they'd be out here fighting without the Lord of Hell's Kitchen himself sending them!"
While directing the fight, Reed quietly eavesdropped on the civilians' chatter — pleased, at least, that the Illuminati's name was finally getting real traction.
What irked him, though, was hearing just how much of the praise still went straight to Hell's Kitchen.
Damn it. Ethan hasn't even lifted a finger yet, and somehow he's still getting all the credit! I'M the one actually saving you people! Reed fumed silently, throwing himself even harder into the rescue effort out of pure spite.
Up above, Tony could clearly feel the incoming fire against him thinning out — and the moment he let his guard down, distracted for just an instant, one of the Chitauri warships fired without warning. A massive beam of laser fire streaked toward him like lightning.
Tony's stomach dropped. He scrambled to adjust his flight vector to dodge — too late.
All he could do was watch that massive beam close the distance, until it finally slammed into him, sending him hurtling toward the ground like a falling star.
He hit the ground hard, the impact leaving him dazed, vision swimming — but he forced himself to stay conscious.
Inside the suit, JARVIS's warning blared immediately: "Warning. Warning. Suit integrity currently at over 50% damage."
Tony's stomach sank further. One more hit like that, and he wasn't sure the suit could take it.
As if on cue, another massive laser blast followed close behind the first.
Just as he braced himself to eat the hit head-on, a figure suddenly appeared in front of him.
Tall, armored, shield raised — Captain America.
He planted himself between Tony and the incoming beam, blocking the second massive laser blast with his shield.
"Getting distracted mid-fight, Stark? Really?"
