OUTRAGES IN WHITECHAPEL!
THE LONDON FIEND DESCRIBED — A FOREIGNER IN LEATHER APRON SUSPECTED
Witnesses Speak — Police Close in on a Shadowy Figure
New York, October — (By Cable)
London remains in the most dreadful state of public agitation following the recent and brutal murders that have been terrorizing the district of Whitechapel. New witness testimonies, obtained by the Metropolitan Police, provide increasingly consistent descriptions of a man of foreign appearance, wearing a leather apron and frequenting the streets at improper hours.
A respectable lady, whose identity is being withheld by the authorities, declared that she saw one of the victims in the company of an individual "of rough aspect, restless gaze, and the attire of a laboring man," only moments before the crime.
Another informant describes the suspect as "short, stout, coarse in features, and abrupt in manner," adding that he appeared to avoid the light of public lamps.
The London press has already begun referring to the man as "Leather Apron," a figure who, according to rumor, is well known among the poorer inhabitants of the area.
Unofficial sources indicate that the police already have under surveillance an individual who corresponds, in large measure, to these descriptions—a shoemaker of Jewish origin, known to frequent the vicinity of Dorset Street.
Our artist, based upon the descriptions provided, has produced a likeness of the suspect, which we publish in this edition. The resemblance, according to reports from London, is considered remarkable.
The authorities remain reserved regarding the man's identity, but assure that efforts toward his capture are advancing with speed.
Meanwhile, panic spreads, and the population demands—with growing impatience—that the monster be brought to justice.
