Chapter 5 - The truth about Ethan

Daniel couldn't breathe.

Ethan stood in front of them, his face calm and unreadable.

For the first time since meeting him, Daniel didn't know what to think.

This was the same Ethan who had welcomed him on his first day.

The same Ethan who had warned him about Zara.

The same Ethan who had sat with him at lunch and listened to all his questions.

But now he was standing in the old dance hall, in the exact place where Emma disappeared.

"Why are you here?" Daniel asked.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

His eyes moved from Daniel to Zara.

"You weren't supposed to find this place."

Zara stepped forward.

"How did you know we were here?"

Ethan looked away.

"Because I know more than you think."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Then tell us."

Ethan sighed.

"I wanted to."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because I knew what would happen if the truth came out."

Zara's expression hardened.

"Don't pretend you care about the truth."

Ethan looked at her.

For a moment, Daniel saw something strange between them.

Pain.

Anger.

And something they weren't saying.

"You still blame me," Ethan said quietly.

Zara's eyes narrowed.

"Shouldn't I?"

Daniel looked between them.

"What is going on?"

Neither of them answered.

The silence was worse than any explanation.

Finally, Ethan walked toward the old stage.

"Emma wasn't just a student who disappeared."

Daniel listened carefully.

"She found something."

"What?" Daniel asked.

Ethan looked at the dusty floor.

"Something that could destroy people."

"Who?"

Ethan didn't respond.

That answer was enough.

Someone powerful was involved.

---

The sound of footsteps outside the hall interrupted them.

All three of them froze.

"Someone's coming," Zara whispered.

Ethan quickly turned off the lights.

"Hide."

Daniel wanted to ask questions, but there wasn't time.

They moved behind the old curtains.

The door opened slowly.

A person entered the room.

Daniel held his breath.

The footsteps moved across the floor.

Then stopped.

"I know you're here."

Daniel recognized the voice.

It was Lucas.

A few seconds later, Lucas stepped into the light.

His eyes scanned the room.

"You can't hide forever."

Zara looked at Ethan angrily.

"You called him?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

Daniel was confused.

"Then why is he here?"

Nobody answered.

Lucas walked toward the center of the room.

"Emma's secret should have stayed buried."

Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.

Emma's secret.

Everyone kept talking about it.

But nobody explained.

Suddenly, Lucas stopped.

His eyes moved toward the curtain.

Daniel knew immediately.

They had been discovered.

Lucas pulled the curtain aside.

The three of them stepped out.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Lucas looked at Ethan.

"I knew it was you."

Ethan's face remained calm.

"And I knew you would come."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Can someone please explain what is happening?"

Lucas looked at him.

"You shouldn't be here, Daniel."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"And maybe you should listen."

Daniel shook his head.

"No. I'm tired of everyone hiding things from me."

Lucas studied him.

"You really don't know anything, do you?"

"No."

Lucas looked at Zara.

"She didn't tell you."

Zara looked away.

Daniel turned to her.

"Tell me what?"

Before Zara could answer, Ethan spoke.

"Emma was investigating someone."

"Who?"

Ethan looked at Lucas.

Lucas looked back at him.

Neither wanted to say the name.

Then Zara whispered:

"Someone inside the school."

Daniel felt a cold feeling.

"Who?"

A loud noise came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

The door opened.

Mrs. Thompson entered.

The room became completely silent.

Daniel stared.

His teacher.

Again.

"What are you all doing here?"

Nobody answered.

Mrs. Thompson looked disappointed.

Not surprised.

Disappointed.

"I was afraid this would happen."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Did you know?"

She looked at him.

"Know what?"

"About Emma."

The teacher became quiet.

That was all the answer Daniel needed.

"You all knew."

Mrs. Thompson closed her eyes.

"Daniel, you don't understand."

"Then make me understand."

She looked at Zara.

Then Ethan.

Then Lucas.

Finally, she said:

"Emma discovered something that put her in danger."

"What?"

Mrs. Thompson hesitated.

"She discovered that someone had been changing school records."

Daniel frowned.

"School records?"

"Grades. Attendance. Personal files."

"Why?"

"Because someone was hiding something."

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at everyone.

"So Emma found out."

Mrs. Thompson nodded.

"And after that night, she disappeared."

Daniel swallowed.

"Did she leave?"

Nobody answered.

That silence was terrifying.

---

Later that evening, Daniel sat in his room staring at his notebook.

His entire understanding of Westbridge High had changed.

At first, he thought Zara was the mystery.

Now he realized she was only part of it.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone was hiding something.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

You are looking in the wrong direction.

Daniel frowned.

Another message arrived.

Ethan is not the person you should fear.

His eyes widened.

Before he could reply, another message appeared.

Ask Zara what happened the night Emma vanished.

Daniel stared at the screen.

He had thought he was getting closer to the truth.

But every answer only created more questions.

---

The next morning, Daniel arrived at school determined.

He found Zara near her locker.

"We need to talk."

She looked tired.

"I know."

"You knew Emma was investigating school records?"

Zara froze.

"Who told you?"

"So it's true."

She looked down.

"Daniel..."

"No. I need the truth."

She closed her locker.

"The truth is complicated."

"I can handle complicated."

Zara looked at him sadly.

"That's what Emma said."

Daniel became quiet.

"What happened to her?"

Zara looked around.

Then she whispered:

"Emma found proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That someone was using the school system to control students' futures."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Someone was changing things. Helping certain people. Destroying others."

"Who?"

Zara opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, a voice interrupted.

"Daniel."

They turned.

It was Ethan.

His expression was serious.

"We need to talk."

Daniel looked at Zara.

Then Ethan.

For the first time, he wasn't sure who he could trust.

---

After school, Ethan took Daniel to an empty classroom.

"I owe you an explanation."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Yes, you do."

Ethan sat down.

"Emma was my friend too."

Daniel was surprised.

"Then why did you act like you didn't know her?"

"Because after she disappeared, everyone became afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

"Of the people who wanted the truth hidden."

Daniel stared at him.

"Are you one of them?"

Ethan looked hurt.

"No."

"Then why were you in the dance hall?"

"Because I was trying to protect you."

"By hiding everything?"

Ethan looked down.

"I thought keeping you away was safer."

Daniel didn't answer.

Part of him wanted to believe Ethan.

But another part remembered the warning messages.

"Who sent the messages?"

Ethan looked up.

"What messages?"

Daniel watched his reaction carefully.

He looked genuinely surprised.

"You don't know?"

"No."

Before Daniel could respond, Ethan's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"What is it?"

Ethan didn't answer.

He slowly turned the phone toward Daniel.

There was one new message.

A picture.

Of Daniel and Ethan inside the classroom.

Taken just moments ago.

Below the picture were the words:

Now you know too much.

Daniel and Ethan looked at each other.

Someone was watching them.

Someone inside Westbridge High.

And whoever it was...

was getting closer.

I thought the worst was already behind me.

I was wrong.

As I reached for the door handle, my phone suddenly vibrated. A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

"You need to stop looking for the truth before it destroys you."

My heart froze.

Who sent this? And how did they know what I was searching for?

Before I could reply, another message came in.

"If you want answers, come to the old library at midnight. Come alone."

I stared at the words, feeling a strange mix of fear and curiosity.

This could be a trap.

But it could also be the only chance I had to uncover the secret everyone was trying to hide from me.

I looked at the dark hallway ahead and took a deep breath.

Tomorrow night, I would finally discover the truth…

Or lose everything trying.
