Chapter 10: Eyes That Measure
They didn't go far. Nara chose a quiet corner near the edge of the settlement, close enough to leave quickly, far enough to avoid attention. Aren sat on a low crate while she spoke briefly with a woman handing out food. No warmth, no questions—just a small bowl passed over without a word.
Aren stared at it for a moment before eating. It was plain, thick, and barely warm, but it steadied him more than he expected.
"You eat like you haven't in days," Nara said.
"…I haven't," Aren replied.
She nodded like that was enough.
For a while, neither of them spoke. The noise of the settlement filled the space instead—low voices, footsteps, the occasional clink of metal. It wasn't peaceful, just controlled. Like everyone here was used to waiting for something to go wrong.
Aren lowered the bowl, glancing around again. "…how long do we stay?"
"Not long."
"…because of the hunters?"
"Because of everything."
That answer sat heavy.
The system flickered.

Aren exhaled slowly. The tightness in his chest had eased, but not completely. It never fully left.
"…does it always feel like this?" he asked.
Nara glanced at him. "Like what?"
"…like something's watching."
She didn't answer immediately. Instead, she looked past him, scanning the movement around them.
"…sometimes," she said.
That wasn't reassuring.
Aren pushed himself to his feet, stretching slightly. His body still felt heavy, like it hadn't fully caught up with everything that had happened. He could feel the difference now—before and after using that power. Subtle, but real.
"…Nara," he said quietly, "what happens if someone finds out about me?"
She didn't look at him this time. "Depends who."
"…and if it's the wrong person?"
"…then we don't stay long enough for it to matter."
Simple.
Direct.
Not comforting.
Aren nodded faintly, though something about that answer bothered him. Running again. Always moving. No place to stop.
Before he could say anything else—
That same voice from earlier cut through the air.
"You're still here."
Aren turned.
The man from before stood a few steps away again, hands relaxed at his sides. Same calm expression. Same sharp eyes.
Nara didn't move, but her attention shifted fully to him. "…we're leaving soon."
The man nodded slightly, like he expected that. His gaze moved past her, settling on Aren again.
"…you don't belong here," he said.
Aren frowned. "…you said that already."
"…and I was right."
Silence stretched.
Nara stepped slightly forward. "Say what you came to say."
The man's expression didn't change. "…you're being tracked."
Aren's chest tightened instantly.
"…what?"
Nara's grip on her spear tightened. "…by who?"
"…not sure," the man replied. "But something's been circling the perimeter since you arrived."
Aren felt it again—that faint pressure, like something just out of reach.
"…you can sense it?" he asked.
The man gave a small shrug. "Enough to know it's not normal."
Nara's eyes narrowed. "…why tell us?"
A brief pause.
Then—
"…because whatever it is," the man said, "it's not here for the rest of us."
That landed heavier than anything else.
Aren swallowed.
"…so it's still following me."
No one answered.
They didn't need to.
Nara turned immediately. "We're leaving. Now."
Aren didn't argue this time.
He grabbed what little he had—nothing, really—and followed her without hesitation.
Behind them, the man watched silently.
As they passed through the edge of the settlement, the guards barely reacted this time. No questions. No interest. Just another pair leaving.
But Aren felt it.
Stronger now.
Closer.
The system flickered—
---
[Trace Presence: Locked]
[Distance: Unknown]
[Intent: Undetermined]

Aren's steps slowed slightly.
"…Nara."
"I know."
They didn't stop.
Didn't look back.
But both of them understood the same thing now.
Whatever had been watching—
Was no longer waiting.
