Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Between Steps and Unspoken Intentions

The café door closed softly behind them, muting the gentle hum of voices and the clatter of cups into a distant blur. Outside, the air carried a cooler edge as evening settled in, the sky dimming into muted shades while streetlights flickered to life one by one. The world felt quieter here, slower, as if the day itself had taken a measured breath.

Cara walked beside Lucien at an even pace, her posture composed, her expression calm. To anyone passing by, they would seem like two students casually heading home, but beneath that quiet exterior, her thoughts were far from still. The time inside the café had given her little in terms of answers, yet it had confirmed something far more important. Lucien was observant, deliberate, and far too careful to be ordinary.

Beside her, Lucien matched her pace effortlessly, his presence calm but precise. There was nothing overtly suspicious about him, yet everything about him suggested control. He spoke only when necessary, and when he did, every word seemed chosen rather than spontaneous.

For a while, neither of them spoke. The silence stretched between them, not empty, but filled with quiet awareness.

"You're quiet," Lucien said.

"So are you," Cara replied.

"I usually am."

"That makes two of us."

Lucien studied her briefly before continuing, "You're thinking about the incident."

"It would be strange if I wasn't."

"It would."

Cara let a moment pass before speaking again, her tone measured. "You noticed something there. More than what was shown."

"And you didn't?"

"I noticed that it didn't look like a normal accident."

"That's a reasonable observation."

"And yours?"

Lucien paused slightly before answering, "The same."

"That's all?"

"For now."

Cara let out a soft breath that almost resembled a quiet laugh. "You're careful with your answers."

"So are you."

"That's because I don't like assumptions."

"Neither do I."

They continued walking, the environment gradually shifting as they moved into a quieter part of the neighborhood. The buildings were more spaced out, the noise of the main road fading behind them. Their footsteps became more distinct against the pavement, the stillness making every small sound more noticeable.

Cara glanced around briefly before speaking again. "You chose a quieter route."

"It's less crowded."

"And easier to think?"

"That too."

She studied him for a moment, her suspicion settling more firmly into place. There was something about the way he spoke, the way he observed, that felt too deliberate. He had been at the same place, at the same time, for reasons he refused to explain. Just like her.

"You ask a lot of questions," she said.

"And you avoid answering them."

"I answer enough."

"Enough to redirect the conversation."

"That's still an answer."

Lucien did not argue, but his gaze lingered on her slightly longer this time. Then he spoke again, his tone shifting just enough to carry weight beneath it. "You weren't surprised."

"About what?"

"The situation earlier."

Cara held his gaze briefly before answering. "I was curious."

"Not surprised."

"Should I have been?"

"Most people would be."

"Then I suppose I'm not most people."

Lucien did not respond immediately, but the faint narrowing of his eyes suggested he had taken note of that.

They walked a few more steps before Lucien slowed slightly, his pace becoming more deliberate as he guided them toward a narrower side street. The shift in direction was subtle, but not accidental.

Cara noticed immediately.

"This isn't the most direct way," she said.

"It's quieter."

Her gaze moved across the surroundings. Fewer people. Longer shadows. A stillness that felt intentional.

Cara stopped.

Lucien took one more step before stopping as well, turning to face her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them seemed to settle, the earlier tension sharpening into something more defined.

"You're doing this on purpose," Cara said.

"Yes."

There was no hesitation in his answer.

She crossed her arms lightly, her posture relaxed despite the situation. "And what exactly are you trying to confirm?"

Lucien regarded her calmly. "Whether you're involved."

"In what?"

"The incident."

Cara stared at him for a second, then let out a quiet laugh. "That's an interesting accusation."

"It's a question."

"And if I say no?"

"Then I observe whether your actions match your answer."

"You're very thorough."

"Yes."

She uncrossed her arms slightly, her expression softening just a fraction. "Then let me ask you something. Why were you there?"

Lucien did not answer immediately. His silence stretched just long enough to feel intentional.

"I had a reason," he said finally.

"That doesn't answer the question."

"Neither did yours."

Cara exhaled softly. "Fair enough."

The tension held between them, balanced and controlled. Neither pushed too far, yet neither stepped back.

"If you think I caused that," Cara said lightly, "then you're overestimating me."

"I don't think you caused it."

"No?"

"No."

"Then what exactly are you trying to confirm?"

Lucien met her gaze directly. "That you're not dangerous."

Cara blinked once, genuinely caught off guard. "That's a very specific concern."

"It's a necessary one."

"And your conclusion?"

"You're not."

She tilted her head slightly. "And you're certain of that?"

"For now."

Cara let out a quiet laugh. "That doesn't sound very reassuring."

"It's honest."

She shook her head lightly, a faint hint of amusement appearing. "You're strange."

"I've been told that."

Cara studied him again, more carefully this time. There was something about him she couldn't ignore. He had sensed something at that site, just like she had. He was asking the right questions, noticing the right details.

He might not be normal anlnd if he wasn't…

Then he might be like her. The thought remained unspoken.

"If something like that happens again," Lucien said, "you shouldn't go alone."

"That sounds like advice."

"It is."

"And why would you give me advice?"

"Because you'll go anyway."

Cara blinked, then let out a quiet laugh. "That's a bold assumption."

"It's an accurate one."

"You're very confident."

"I prefer being prepared."

She looked at him again, her curiosity not fading. "You still haven't answered my question."

"Which one?"

"Why you were there."

Lucien paused.

Then, instead of answering directly, he said, "If you ever need someone to talk to… you can."

Cara stared at him.

The shift in topic was unexpected, enough to catch her off guard despite her usual composure.

"That's not an answer."

"No."

"That's also a very unusual thing to say."

"Is it?"

"Yes."

Lucien regarded her quietly. "It seemed appropriate."

Cara did not respond immediately. She studied him, measuring his expression, his tone, the subtle intention behind his words.

She did not trust him. Not enough to reveal anything but the offer lingered in her thoughts.

"I'll keep that in mind," she said at last.

"That's enough."

They resumed walking, their pace steady once more. The tension had not disappeared, but it had changed, shifting into something quieter, more controlled.

Cara glanced at him briefly. She did not know what he was but she knew he wasn't ordinary.

And whatever had happened at that site…

He had felt it too.

Lucien, meanwhile, kept his gaze forward, his thoughts equally measured. He had not told her everything, not even close, but one conclusion had settled clearly in his mind.

She was not dangerous and that made her someone worth watching. Perhaps even someone worth working with.

Not yet but eventually. For now, they walked side by side, their steps aligned but their intentions hidden beneath carefully chosen words.

Two people connected by the same unanswered question.

Neither willing to reveal the truth.

Neither willing to walk away.
