Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: We're Family, No Need for Formalities

"I think you owe me an explanation."

Krul grabbed Luke's collar with one hand and pointed at Mika standing below the steps with the other.

Mika gave Krul a polite nod and a smile.

"How did you suddenly turn someone into a dependent for no reason?"

Luke put on a flattering face and spoke the truth.

"I just wanted an excuse to take Mika out to play. Don't be mad, Lady Krul."

Krul was somewhat incensed.

"Then if you happen to take a liking to those human brats one day, are you going to turn them all into Vampires? Besides, why did you have to use my blood? Don't you have your own?"

Luke was surprised to hear this.

"My blood works too?"

Krul sneered.

"As long as it's a noble's blood, it can turn someone into a Vampire. You bastard actually used mine!"

Luke scratched his head, feeling a bit embarrassed.

"It's my first time being a Vampire, I didn't know. Haha, then let's just announce to the world that Mika is my dependent, just like Ferid and Crowley."

Krul didn't quite understand why Luke would mention those two.

Luke decided to share some gossip with Krul as compensation for her mental distress.

"Crowley became a Vampire by drinking Rig's blood, but Ferid tricked Crowley into thinking he drank his blood instead."

Krul was genuinely shocked by this news.

"How do you know that?!"

Luke struck the pose of an otherworldly master.

I have the script!

Of course, he couldn't actually say that.

"I guessed... uh... I heard it from Rig!"

Sensing Krul's increasingly dangerous gaze, Luke could only use Rig as a shield.

"He would tell you things like this?"

"I overheard it by chance. That's why he stuffed me in a suitcase that night to silence me! And that's also how I met the beautiful and moving Lady Krul!"

Krul looked at him with a face full of disgust.

"Don't pull that disgusting Ferid routine on me."

"I deny that! My praise is sincere!"

Krul rolled her eyes at Luke, let go of his collar, and stroked her chin as she pondered the truth of this information.

If it came from Rig, it had some credibility. Heh, Ferid, you bastard. If Crowley found out about this, I wonder if he'd still stand by your side!

Luke straightened his collar and asked.

"Then about taking Mika out..."

"Get lost. Take him to get a Combat Uniform and Second-Class Equipment. But if you take him away, you must bring him back, or you'll be in for it! Also, as you said, he is your dependent."

Krul still placed quite a bit of importance on the Seraph project.

Luke signaled that she could trust him to handle it!

"What's mine is yours. We're family, no need for formalities."

Krul gave him a kick, still thinking of a plan to drive a wedge between Ferid and Crowley.

"Oh, right, Lady Krul, today's blood..."

Krul didn't even look at him, stating as if it were obvious.

"That bite you took yesterday was enough for three days. Nothing today!"

"Eh?! Then what about Mika's share?"

Krul's eyes widened. She hadn't expected Luke to be so shameless and immediately got angry.

"Feed your own dependent yourself! I'm not supporting two! Anyway, your blood is filling enough that one sip can last a week. Besides, name one Progenitor's dependent who survives on the Progenitor's blood every day? Go drink human blood yourself!"

Luke didn't push his luck. He hadn't actually expected Krul to cover Mika's meals from the start.

But he still muttered under his breath.

"If one sip lasts a week, I haven't seen you only drink once a week..."

"Hmm?"

"Cough, Mika, let's go!"

Luke dodged Krul's sudden strike, darted to Mika's side, and dragged him away.

Mika, who had been standing below for a long time, was pulled out of the hall by Luke before he could react.

Krul watched Mika's retreating back, feeling a bit strange. Normally, there should be a unique sensation after someone becomes her dependent, but she didn't feel it with Mika.

"Whew~ that was close!"

Mika made a joke.

"You and Lady Krul are both like children."

Luke started walking toward the Vampire warehouse, gesturing for Mika to follow.

"Don't talk nonsense. I'm very steady!"

Mika felt a bit amused watching Luke, who was carefully focusing on stepping on the tiles without touching the lines.

"Right, right, right, you're the steadiest. Can we go find Yu and the others next?"

Luke said, frustrated by his lack of ambition.

"Yu, Yu, Yu. What kind of spell did he cast on you? Akane and the others are going to be heartbroken."

"It's not like that. Don't look at Yu that way; he's very gentle with his family."

Mika defended Yuichiro, then changed the subject.

"Besides, Akane won't be sad because I mentioned Yu. She might be sad because of a certain someone, though~"

Feeling that Mika was hinting at something, Luke asked curiously.

"Me? Why?"

Mika smiled with narrowed eyes and said in an exaggerated tone.

"If Akane knew that Luke was having an ambiguous relationship with the Vampire Queen underground... Sigh, poor Akane."

All the children at the Hyakuya Orphanage could see that Akane Hyakuya liked Luke.

But Luke felt that a kid that small didn't know the first thing about love.

"Don't talk nonsense, Mika. Believe it or not, I won't take you out!"

"Fine, fine, fine, I'll stop. I give up, you win, Lord Mikael."

"Let's go get your gear first. Vampire equipment is divided into First-Class and Second-Class. First-Class is much stronger. I'll get you a piece of First-Class Equipment in a bit."

Mika was a bit puzzled and asked Luke uncertainly.

"Didn't I just hear Lady Krul mention Second-Class Equipment?"

Luke waved his hand.

"Second-Class Equipment is your clearance level. Mine is First-Class. I haven't taken mine yet, so I'll give my share to you."

Mika quickly shook his head in refusal.

"I don't want it. You'll definitely need a weapon for combat too. If I take it, what will you use?"

Luke put an arm around Mika's shoulder and said nonchalantly.

"It's fine, I have Zero-Class Equipment! Remember the weapon I used to hit Ferid four years ago? It's super-duper-mega powerful!"

Mika was still worried.

"Really?"

Luke said helplessly.

"Really. Just take it and don't worry. You're so weak, you'll have to rely on me for protection out there."

Only then did Mika feel at ease.

"Fine, but I've been exercising every day for the past four years. I'm not weak!"

"I know, you're the strongest. Let's go."

Twenty-odd minutes later.

"Looks pretty good. Almost as handsome as me."

Looking at the brand-new Mika before him, Luke couldn't help but feel that he truly lived up to the reputation of a top-tier dark protagonist.

With the Combat Uniform on and a sword hanging at his waist, his aura immediately transformed.

Mika adjusted his outfit; it was quite comfortable, and the cloak wouldn't hinder his movements.

Luke handed Mika a metal ring.

Mika took it; it was very light, about the size of a bowl's rim, and unexpectedly hard.

"What's this? It's so big. Do I wear it on my neck or my leg?"

Luke rolled up his right sleeve. He was wearing this ring on his right arm, but it fit perfectly, unlike the large one in Mika's hand.

"This is a UV Absorption Device. Vampires can't be exposed to UV rays. You can't go without it if you want to move around during the day. Slip it onto your arm, and it will adjust its size automatically."

Mika did as told, and the ring indeed adjusted its size just as Luke had said.

Luke nodded.

"Preparations are about done. I'll take you to find the Defense Force, and we'll go out for a wild ride."
