Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT SHE RETURNED

THIRD PERSON POV

The party had begun.

The Mariano Estate, already breathtaking, now pulsed with life as luxury cars lined the entrance and guests poured in one after another, each arrival more powerful than the last. The air carried a mix of expensive perfume, quiet conversations, and the unmistakable hum of wealth gathering in one place.

Black and silver dominated the night.

Gowns flowed like liquid elegance, tailored suits fit like second skin, diamonds caught the light in soft flashes, and every step taken echoed status, influence, and legacy. Influencers, business tycoons, old money families—London's elite had answered the invitation.

Inside, laughter blended with champagne glasses clinking, cameras flashing subtly, and conversations layered with hidden intentions. This wasn't just a birthday party.

It was a statement.

At the center of it all, Jashfer and Reycee moved effortlessly, greeting guests, exchanging pleasantries, their presence commanding yet warm. Tonight wasn't just about hosting.

It was about presenting their daughter to the world again.

And then—The Watsons arrived.

Their entrance didn't need announcement. It carried its own weight.

Kade Watson and Serina Watson stepped in with quiet authority, their presence instantly recognized, instantly respected. Conversations shifted slightly, eyes turned subtly—it was the kind of arrival people felt.

Reycee's face lit up as she approached them, greeting Serina warmly with a hug, while Jashfer and Kade exchanged firm handshakes that carried years of trust beneath them. Their conversation flowed easily, familiar, effortless.

Beside them—Samantha Marie Watson looked around with bright eyes, already searching.

"Aunt Reycee, where's sister Jay?" she asked, excitement barely contained.

"She's upstairs sam, getting ready,I guess she'll be down soon..." Reycee smiled.

Samantha grinned. "oo okay thanks aunt..."

But one presence was missing.

Keifer.

"Kade where's keifer? Why isn't he here?"

Jashfer asked looking around...

"He's running a little late..he told me he'll be here soon as he finishes his work...," Kade added casually, though his tone carried a quiet expectation. And while the world downstairs waited...

Upstairs, something else was unfolding.

JAY'S POV

The noise from downstairs feels distant, like it belongs to another world entirely. Music hums softly through the walls, mixed with laughter and the faint clink of glasses, but up here in my room, everything feels slower—quieter, heavier, like the calm before something I can't quite name.

I stand in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection a little longer than necessary. For a second, it feels unfamiliar—not wrong, just… different, like I'm looking at a version of myself I haven't fully caught up to yet.

The gown fits perfectly, hugging me in all the right places, the deep cherry red catching the light with a quiet kind of power. It's elegant, refined, almost intimidating—and yet, somehow, it still feels like me.

My fingers brush over the fabric, grounding myself in the moment. Three years away, and somehow, everything feels the same and completely different at once, like I've stepped back into a life that kept moving even without me.

I exhale slowly, trying to steady the strange mix of excitement and something softer sitting in my chest. I should be used to this—attention, people, being seen—but this feels different.

Because this is home.

The door opens behind me, breaking the stillness, and I turn instinctively.

Jace stood there. And he just… stops.

For a second, he doesn't say anything, doesn't move, just looks at me like he's trying to process something. It throws me off more than I'd like to admit, so I tilt my head slightly, raising a brow.

"What?" I say, a small smirk forming. "Why are you staring at me like that? Did I grow a second head or something?"

He exhales, shaking his head slowly, like he's coming back to himself. "No… worse."

I narrow my eyes. "That doesn't sound comforting."

"You look so good it's actually gonna create a problem," he says, stepping closer now, still watching me like I might disappear if he looks away.

I let out a soft laugh, rolling my eyes even though I can feel warmth creeping in. "Oh my God, since when do you talk like that? Who are you and what have you done with my brother?"

"I'm serious," he replies, his tone quieter now, more real. "Do you have any idea what's going to happen downstairs?"

I cross my arms lightly, leaning against the vanity. "Let me guess—people will eat, gossip, pretend to like each other?"

A small smirk tugs at his lips. "No. They're going to lose their minds over you.. I'm sure the boys downstairs will trip on their own shoes while looking at you....I have to keep my big bro vibe in high alert tonight because of this..."

I scoff, shaking my head. "Please don't. By the way you don't need to worry about me..just worry about yourself...Have you even seen yourself? Half the girls down there are probably already planning their future with you."

"Jay,you know your brother is handsome as fuck ..girls are lining up for me every single day from here to Milan so I probably don't give a shit..and also ," he shrugs, almost casually. "I'm not the main event tonight. You are."

Something about that lands deeper than I expect. The way he says it—so sure, so proud—it makes my chest feel a little tighter. Before I can respond, he steps forward and pulls me into a hug.

And I didn't hesitate.

I lean into him instantly, my arms wrapping around him as the world quiets in a way only he can make it. It's not tight or overwhelming—it's just… familiar, steady, safe.

"Happy birthday, baby sissy," he murmurs softly.

My eyes close for a second, my breath catching just slightly. "Thank you…" I whisper, and it comes out softer than I expect.

When he pulls away, he reaches into his pocket and hands me a small velvet box. I look at it for a second, confused, then back at him.

"Jace…"

"Just open it."

I do.

And the moment I see it, everything else fades.

It's a picture—my first birthday. My face is covered in frosting, my smile wide and careless, and Jace is right beside me, just as messy, just as happy. We look ridiculous.

And perfect.

My fingers tighten slightly around the frame as something warm and achingly soft settles in my chest.

"You cried when they took the cake away," he says, trying to sound casual, like this doesn't mean anything.

I laugh quietly, shaking my head. "You cried too."

"I was emotionally invested."

"Yeah, sure you were."

We both laugh, but it feels different now—deeper somehow, like we're holding onto something we don't say out loud.

Then there's a knock on the door.

"It's time."

The words hit differently than they should.

I look at Jace, and he looks back at me, something unspoken passing between us.

"Ready?" he asks.

Am I?

I take a slow breath, straightening slightly, forcing the nerves down.

"Yeah."

He nods once and leaves, the door closing softly behind him.

And suddenly—I'm alone.

I walk toward the top of the staircase, my heels clicking softly against the floor, each step louder than the last. The lights downstairs dim slightly, the music softens, and I can feel it—the shift.

They're waiting..

For me.

My heart starts beating faster, louder, like it's trying to keep up with the moment. It's ridiculous—I've done this before, faced crowds, cameras, expectations.

But this feels heavier.

More real.

Because this is home.Because these people know me.Because this actually matters.

Then I hear Jace's voice echo through the hall.

"Ladies and gentlemen… let's welcome tonight's star—the princess of the Mariano family…"

There's a pause..And then—

"Ms. Jasper Jean Mariano."

The spotlight hits me.

For a split second, everything in me freezes. The light is warm, almost blinding, and I can feel every single eye in the room turn toward me at once.

But I don't step back.

I step forward.

One step at a time, slow and steady, my posture straight, my expression calm. The gown catches the light with every movement, shimmering softly, and I can hear it now—the whispers, the quiet reactions, the shift in the room.

I feel it all.

And yet—I don't let it touch me.

By the time I reach the last step, the nerves are gone, replaced by something steadier, something stronger.

Control.

Jace reaches for my hand, and I take it without hesitation, letting him guide me the last few steps toward the stage.

I see my parents standing there, their eyes filled with pride, something warm and grounding passing through me instantly.

I take the mic, my fingers steady despite everything.

"Good Evening Everyone...As most of you already know me I'm Jasper Jean Mariano you can also call me Jay and I just want to thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate my important day..," I say, my voice calm, clear. "It really means a lot to me."

Then the cake is brought out.I couldn't stop staring at my cake—soft ivory lace and deep roses blooming like secrets—dark, romantic, and impossibly mine, as if it understood me completely.

The room fills with the sound of people singing, voices blending together as all eyes remain on me.

I close my eyes for a moment.And I don't overthink it.I just make a wish...

To keep all my beloved people safe and secure and maybe just maybe a little love experience would be nice heheh...

Then I blow out the candles.

Cheers erupt instantly, loud and bright, confetti bursting into the air as laughter and music rise around me. The energy shifts completely, turning into something alive, something electric.

I cut the cake, feeding mom, then dad, then Jace, laughing softly as they tease me like nothing has changed. And maybe, in some ways, it hasn't.

I take the mic again, my heart still racing—but this time, it feels good.

I look out at the crowd, at the lights, at the night stretching out in front of me like something waiting to happen.

"Let's get this party started."

The room explodes into cheers.Music drops.Lights shift.People move. And I step back, smiling, letting it all unfold around me—

Not knowing…Not even suspecting—That somewhere, at this exact moment..

Everything is about to change. And it's walking in late. 😌🔥
