She came to him on the two hundred and forty-third day with her sleeves pushed up and both wrists open and a look on her face that he had catalogued as: I have been building something for a long time and I have finished building it and I am going to show you now.

He said: "I assumed they were."

He said: "Which means."

He said: "How comfortable."

He said: "That's sufficient."

 

She said: "Is it."

She looked at the diagram. She said: "There is something else."

He thought about what that meant. He thought about the living world on the other side of the crossing, thinning for four hundred years while the accumulated dead could not reach back. He thought about all the things that go unfinished not because the person who died failed but because the door was never open.

 

He thought: it has been closed for four hundred years. It is about to open.

 

He said: "How many people at the crossing point can the translation channel hold at once."

 

She looked at her diagram.

 

She said: "I don't know. The geometry suggests more than one. The channel has—" she traced the drawing with her finger, "—width. Like a room, not a pipe. But I have no precedent for what the practical capacity is."

 

He said: "We'll find out."

 

She said: "We will."

 

She folded her wrists closed. She looked at him with the look that had no Valdrek word for it except the one she had taught him, the word that did not file under any usual category.

 

He added the concept of acoustic geometry to the new slate. Three hundred and nineteen words. The category was: tools for what comes next.
