Maya's POV
I know I might sound rude… but who cares?
I'm her sister. And she did that to me… then just walks back in like nothing happened.
You're probably wondering what she did.
Well, she betrayed me.
And tell me—who does that to family?
I scoff as I reach my room, slamming the door hard behind me just so everyone knows I'm angry. Not that they care.
I'm definitely not getting any sleep tonight, so I grab my phone and call Lana.
If you're wondering who Lana is—she's my best friend. We've been close for almost six years… ever since my sister turned against me.
Lana is stunning. Like, effortlessly beautiful. She can wear anything and still look like she stepped out of a magazine—and trust me, she knows it. Being in the cheer squad already gets her attention, but she's not just your typical cheer girl. She's actually a nerd too… a rare combo.
And then there's Max. Her boyfriend. Well… on and off boyfriend. They've been together since they were fourteen, and honestly? That kind of relationship is exhausting just to watch.
The phone rings.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
She finally picks up.
Lana: "Hey, dear—"
Me: "Don't you dare 'hey' me! You said you were coming over."
Lana: "Actually, if you had picked up your damn phone earlier, you would've known I canceled."
I roll my eyes.
Me: "Okay, fine. Whatever. You always have the last word anyway."
Lana: "Seriously? Should I remind you of our last conversation? You clearly had the last word."
I can literally hear her rolling her eyes.
Me: "Nope. Don't. By the way… Mary's back."
There's a pause.
Lana: "Who is—wait… Mary? As in your sister? Oh my God! That's why you didn't pick my call, right?"
Me: "No, no, no. And one question at a time, please. I didn't see your call, so relax."
Lana: (giggles) "Okay… so why do you sound so grumpy?"
Me: "I am not grumpy. And wait—did you just giggle? Lana, why are you giggling? What's going on over there?"
Lana: "Sorry! Max just texted me. But seriously… if your sister is back, that's a good thing, right? Don't you get bored being alone when your mom travels?"
She pauses, then adds with a soft laugh—
"Just breathe in and out. You'll be fine."
I snort.
Me: "If I have to 'breathe in and out' every time I see her, I might actually run out of oxygen soon. But girl… what's going on between you and Max? On Friday, that guy was literally everywhere. Every corner I turned, boom—Max."
There's silence.
Then—
Lana: "We broke up."
I sit up immediately.
Me: "Wait… I thought that was last month? Didn't you guys get back together?"
Lana: "We did. But we broke up again… and this time, it's final."
I sigh.
Me: "You say that every time you guys fight. So… what happened now?"
Her voice drops.
Lana: "I caught him cheating."
My grip tightens on the phone.
Me: "With who?"
Lana: "I… I don't know her name. She's in our music class."
I think for a second.
Me: "Red hair? Blue eyes? Flat ass?"
There's a short laugh on the other end.
Lana: "Wow. You really know how to describe people. But yeah… that's her."
Me: "Yeah, I've seen him looking at her before. What's her name again… Merit, right?"
Lana: "Maybe… I don't even care anymore."
There's a pause.
Then suddenly—
Lana: "I have to go. I think he's at my door. I'll update you on Monday."
Me: "Okay… bye. And don't you dare cry, okay? Love you."
Lana: "Yeah… sure."
The line goes dead.
I stare at my phone for a few seconds before tossing it beside me. My mind is still racing, but my body is exhausted.
Slowly, I sink into my bed…
…and let sleep take over.
