Chapter 18 - The lines we crossed

After that conversation…

Things didn't go back to normal.

They couldn't.

Because something had shifted again.

Not just between them—

But inside them.

Amara tried to focus on her life like before.

Lectures. Assignments. Deadlines.

And for the most part…

She succeeded.

But there were moments—

Small, unexpected moments—

Where everything felt complicated again.

Like when she caught Kieran looking at her from across the room.

Not casually.

Not like before.

But intentionally.

Like he was trying to understand something.

Or maybe…

Trying not to lose something.

And then there was the other problem.

The new guy.

His name was Daniel.

Quiet. Respectful. Easy to talk to.

He didn't try too hard.

Didn't ask too many questions.

Didn't make her feel pressured.

And that made things… simple.

"You seem more relaxed around him," Tessa pointed out one afternoon.

Amara shrugged.

"He's easy."

"And Kieran isn't?"

Amara didn't answer.

Because that answer was obvious.

Kieran was never easy.

He was complicated.

Confusing.

Emotional.

And somehow…

Still hard to ignore.

Later that day, Amara sat with Daniel under a tree, going over a project.

"You're really focused," he said with a small smile.

"I have to be," she replied.

"Or you just don't like distractions?"

Amara paused slightly.

"I've learned not to."

Daniel nodded like he understood.

And maybe he did.

But someone else was watching.

From a distance.

Kieran.

His jaw tightened slightly as he watched them.

The way she leaned in while talking.

The way she smiled.

The way she looked… comfortable.

Comfortable in a way she used to be with him.

And that?

That didn't sit well with him.

Without thinking, he turned and walked away.

Because staying there?

Would only make things worse.

That evening, Amara walked alone again.

She needed space.

Time to think.

But she didn't get it.

"You're doing this on purpose."

His voice came from behind her.

She didn't turn immediately.

"Doing what?" she asked calmly.

Kieran stepped closer.

"Him."

Amara sighed softly before turning around.

"His name is Daniel."

"I don't care what his name is."

"That's your problem," she replied.

Silence.

"But I do care," he added, his voice lower now.

That caught her attention.

"Why?" she asked.

Kieran looked at her.

And this time…

He didn't hide it.

"Because I don't want to lose you."

Her heart tightened.

"You already did," she said quietly.

That truth hit hard.

But it was real.

"I'm trying to fix that," he said.

"You can't fix everything," she replied.

"I can try."

Amara shook her head slightly.

"This isn't about trying anymore, Kieran."

"Then what is it about?"

She hesitated.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

"It's about whether I can trust you again."

Silence.

That word—trust—

It carried everything.

The past.

The pain.

The distance.

Kieran nodded slowly.

"That's fair."

That response surprised her.

"No excuses?" she asked.

"No," he said quietly.

"I messed up."

Another pause.

"And I don't expect you to forget that."

Amara studied him.

This wasn't the same Kieran.

The one she knew before would've walked away by now.

But this one?

He stayed.

"I'm not asking you to choose me," he continued.

Her breath caught slightly.

"I just don't want you to choose someone else… because you're afraid of me."

That hit deeper than she expected.

Because maybe…

Just maybe…

There was some truth in it.

She looked away.

"I need time," she said softly.

Kieran nodded.

"I'll wait."

And this time…

She believed him.
