My phone buzzed sharply on the desk, cutting through the quiet focus of reviewing student portfolios. Vael's name lit up the screen. I answered immediately, instincts already prickling.
"Vael. What's wrong?"
His voice came through tight and strained, the rumble of traffic loud in the background. "Rut emergency at the Academy. It triggered Lirien's heat. He's suffering badly. I'm stuck in fucking traffic, I won't make it in time. Davis… can you go to him? Help him if the heat gets too intense. I don't want him in pain, aching and miserable. Just… take care of him until I get there."
