Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Root’s Adaptive Strength

The deafening clash between the golden chaotic shield and the alien energy spear dragged on, the air thick with tension and the sharp hum of clashing powers. Chen Fan's arms shook violently, every muscle in his body screaming in agony, and fresh blood trickled down his forearm from the strain of holding back the overwhelming attack. The cracks on his golden shield spread wider, spiderwebbing across its entire surface, yet the glow within never dimmed—faint, but stubbornly unbroken, fueled by his unshakable will and the quiet, mysterious adaptation of the Chaos Root deep in his dantian.

The lead black-robed invader's face twisted with unbridled rage, his brows furrowed as he poured more and more of his alien power into the spear. He could feel his attack gradually wearing the boy down, but what infuriated him most was that Chen Fan refused to collapse, refused to beg for mercy, refused to surrender. No mortal had ever endured his full hidden power for this long, especially not one already drained and injured from a prior life-or-death battle.

"Quit clinging to your futile resistance!" the invader snarled, his voice booming across the ruins, cold and ruthless. "Your body is on the verge of breaking! That tiny shield won't hold much longer, and when it shatters, you'll be buried beneath the rubble alongside your pathetic sect!"

Chen Fan gritted his teeth so hard he could taste copper, but he didn't back down, not even an inch. His breath came in ragged, painful gasps, yet his gaze remained locked on the invader, sharp and determined. "I told you… I don't give up… not when people I care about are counting on me," he forced out, each word heavy with effort but firm with resolve.

Behind him, the Azure Cloud Sect members watched with bated breath, their hands clenched tight with worry, but none of them backed away. The sect leader stepped forward, his voice steady and loud, cutting through the sound of clashing energies to rally his disciples. "Stay strong! Young Hero Chen is fighting for us—we will not lose faith! His will is unbreakable, and so is ours!"

"Sect Leader is right!" a young female disciple shouted, her eyes shining with unwavering trust. "We survived the Demon Emperor because of him! We'll get through this too, together!"

The quiet murmur of support swelled into a chorus of cheers, each voice lifting higher, filling the ruins with unyielding courage. "Don't give up, Young Hero Chen!" "We believe in you!" "Keep fighting!" The sound wrapped around Chen Fan like a warm blanket, pushing back the exhaustion seeping into his bones and strengthening his grip on the chaotic power.

The four subordinate invaders glanced at each other, unease creeping into their cold composure. They had expected a quick victory, but their leader's full power still hadn't broken the boy, and the mortals' morale only grew stronger. "My lord, this is taking too long. The mortal's resilience is unnatural," one of them said, his voice low and cautious.

"Unnatural or not, he will break," the lead invader snapped, not daring to look away from the shield. But deep down, a flicker of doubt began to grow—he could sense a subtle shift in the Chaos Root's energy, a change he couldn't quite place. It wasn't just resisting his alien power; it was absorbing faint traces of it, weaving the foreign energy into its own to strengthen the shield.

Chen Fan felt it too, a gentle warmth spreading through his dantian that had nothing to do with his own will. The Chaos Root was adapting, slowly learning to counteract the alien energy, turning the invader's own strength into a tiny but vital boost for him. It wasn't enough to turn the tide instantly, but it was enough to keep the shield from shattering, enough to keep him standing.

"You think your little cheering squad can save you?" the lead invader laughed harshly, trying to mask his growing unease. "Their faith is worthless against absolute power! I will end this, now!" He summoned every last drop of his alien power, the spear growing darker and sharper, slamming into the shield with a force that made the entire ground shake.

The golden shield creaked loudly, the cracks widening so much that everyone watching gasped in terror. For a split second, it seemed like it would shatter into pieces—but then, the faint golden glow flared, bright and steady. The cracks stopped spreading, and the shield held firm, the Chaos Root's adaptive power finally kicking into full gear. The alien energy that had been pounding against the shield was now being siphoned away, bit by bit, feeding into Chen Fan's depleted meridians and easing his physical pain.

"What?!" the lead invader roared, his eyes widening in pure disbelief. "What is happening? My power is fading—how are you absorbing it?!" No one had ever been able to absorb his unique alien energy, not even the most powerful cultivators he had encountered in the past. This was a power the Chaos Root had never shown before, a hidden ability even he hadn't known about.

A faint, triumphant smile tugged at Chen Fan's lips, his eyes glowing with a soft golden light. "I told you… you don't understand strength. True strength isn't just about raw power—it's about adapting, about enduring, about fighting for something bigger than yourself," he said, his voice growing stronger, no longer ragged with exhaustion. "The Chaos Root doesn't just follow my power… it follows my will. And my will to protect is unbreakable."

The Azure Cloud Sect members erupted into thunderous cheers, their hope exploding into unbridled joy. "He's holding on! The shield isn't breaking!" "That's our hero! He's turning the tables!" The elders let out relieved laughs, their tense shoulders relaxing, as they realized the tide of the battle was truly shifting.

The lead invader's face turned pale with fury and shock, his confidence crumbling. He had never faced an opponent like this, a mortal who could not only endure his strongest attack but adapt to it. If Chen Fan was allowed to keep absorbing his energy, he would fully recover and become unstoppable. "Retreat! For now," he spat out, the words tasting like poison on his tongue. He couldn't admit defeat openly, but he knew he couldn't win this fight today, not with Chen Fan's unexpected adaptive power.

The four subordinates stared at him in shock, never expecting to hear their leader order a retreat. "My lord? Are you sure? We can still—"

"Did you not hear me?" the lead invader snapped, cutting them off sharply. "We are leaving. But this is not over." He glared at Chen Fan, his golden eyes filled with hatred and warning. "I will be back, boy. Next time, I will bring enough power to crush you and your sect completely. You will not get so lucky then."

Chen Fan slowly lowered his hands, the golden shield fading away but leaving a faint, steady glow around his body. He was still weak, still injured, but he stood tall, his gaze unyielding as he met the invader's stare. "I'll be waiting. And next time, I won't just be holding on—I'll be ready to fight back fully."

With a furious snarl, the lead black-robed invader waved his hand, and the five figures turned into black streamers, shooting into the sky and vanishing into the clouds in the blink of an eye. The oppressive alien energy lifted instantly, leaving the ruins bathed in warm sunlight once more.

For a long moment, the entire Azure Cloud Sect stood in silence, still processing what had just happened. Then, the cheers exploded again, louder and more joyful than ever, as disciples and elders rushed toward Chen Fan, careful not to jostle his injured body.

"You did it! You drove them away!" the young female disciple exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

The sect leader clapped Chen Fan on the shoulder gently, his face filled with pride and gratitude. "You saved us again, Young Hero Chen. Not just with your power, but with your unbreakable will. You've inspired every single one of us."

Chen Fan smiled softly, feeling exhaustion wash over him now that the adrenaline faded, but a warm sense of accomplishment filled his chest. He hadn't just fought off an enemy—he had grown stronger, learned more about the Chaos Root's power, and stood by the people who had stood by him.

But as he looked up at the sky where the invaders had vanished, his smile faded slightly, his gaze turning serious. He knew the lead invader wasn't lying—he would be back, with more power, more dangerous than ever. And Chen Fan wasn't going to wait for the next attack.

"I need to keep training," he whispered to himself, his resolve burning brighter than ever. "I need to master the Chaos Root's adaptive strength, get stronger, and protect this sect fully next time."

The Chaos Root in his dantian pulsed gently, as if agreeing with his resolve, a faint golden warmth spreading through his body. The battle was over for now, but the journey to grow stronger, to protect his loved ones, was only just beginning. And Chen Fan was ready to put in every ounce of effort, to keep pushing forward, no matter how hard the path ahead would be.
