Chapter 213 - Chapter 213: The Smiling Shadow

The underground city fell into absolute silence as the shadow behind the enormous golden eye slowly stepped forward.

Ancient bells that had echoed continuously since the Sleeper awakened suddenly stopped ringing. Their music disappeared so abruptly that the silence itself felt unnatural. Even the rivers of crystal light flowing beneath the silver streets seemed to dim, while countless floating lanterns scattered across the city flickered as though reacting to a presence they had never expected to witness again.

Everyone looked toward the widening crack.

No one blinked.

The golden eye was enormous.

It alone had filled the fracture in reality.

Yet the figure emerging behind it made the eye seem insignificant.

It wasn't larger.

It wasn't more powerful in appearance.

It simply felt... deeper.

Like looking beyond a mountain and realizing the mountain had only been hiding something infinitely greater.

The shadow remained hidden beneath flowing darkness. Only a faint outline could be seen through the rippling veil that covered its body. Long robes drifted without wind, dissolving into black mist before reforming moments later. Silver symbols occasionally appeared beneath the darkness, only to disappear again before anyone could recognize them.

The only feature visible...

Was its smile.

A calm smile.

Patient.

Gentle.

Almost welcoming.

That expression unsettled Kael more than the eye ever had.

The First Son's smile vanished immediately.

Golden light surrounding his body intensified until the air itself began shimmering with unbearable heat. Ancient symbols erupted beneath his feet, spreading across the broken streets in concentric circles while countless runes ignited throughout the nearby district.

For the first time since Kael had met him...

The ancient warrior looked genuinely alarmed.

The stranger reacted just as quickly.

The old scholar snapped his book shut, and every page burst apart into thousands of glowing fragments. The pieces floated around him like silver leaves before arranging themselves into enormous circles of rotating script that stretched high above the observation platform. Each symbol radiated tremendous pressure, bending the surrounding space as they rotated faster and faster.

Even the Sleeper stood perfectly still.

The ancient being's golden eyes remained fixed on the smiling figure while the silver chains drifting around the throne slowly wrapped themselves around its arms and shoulders.

Not restraints.

Armor.

The realization sent a chill through everyone present.

If the Sleeper...

The being who *was* the prison...

Considered this opponent worthy of preparing for battle—

Then the situation had become far worse than anyone imagined.

Aren slowly swallowed.

His eyes moved from the shadow...

To the First Son...

To the Sleeper...

Then toward Kael.

Finally he whispered,

"I don't suppose that's another old friend."

Nobody answered.

The shadow did.

Its laughter rolled gently through the crack in reality.

Warm.

Soft.

Friendly.

"I was."

The underground city trembled.

Not violently.

The vibration felt almost respectful, as though the prison itself had recognized the voice.

Kael frowned.

Something inside him stirred.

Not the black mark.

Not the returning memories.

Something deeper.

Recognition.

The voice sounded familiar.

Painfully familiar.

The shadow slowly raised one hand.

Long fingers emerged from beneath flowing darkness, impossibly pale against the endless black surrounding them. Ancient symbols appeared above the open palm before dissolving into tiny stars that drifted lazily into the crack.

"I've waited a very long time."

The sentence echoed throughout the prison.

The Sleeper finally spoke.

Its calm voice carried none of its earlier warmth.

"You shouldn't have come."

The smiling figure tilted its head slightly.

"I had no choice."

The First Son took one step forward.

Stone shattered beneath his foot.

"You always had a choice."

Silence followed.

The shadow remained smiling.

"I did."

Another pause.

"I simply chose poorly."

The answer stunned Kael.

There was no arrogance.

No denial.

Only regret.

The stranger lowered his head.

"For once..."

His voice sounded almost broken.

"...we agree."

The bells throughout the city rang once.

Only once.

The single note echoed endlessly across the underground metropolis before fading into silence again.

Kael couldn't look away from the smiling figure.

Every instinct warned him to.

Yet something stronger kept his eyes fixed upon the shadow.

He wanted...

No.

He *needed*...

To see the face hidden beneath the darkness.

The black mark suddenly burned.

Silver light spread farther across his shoulder before racing toward his neck. Ancient symbols illuminated one after another while another memory forced its way into his consciousness.

The underground city vanished.

He stood beneath a brilliant blue sky.

Real sunlight warmed his face.

Gentle wind carried the scent of flowers through a wide stone courtyard overlooking an endless ocean. Children ran between flowering trees while countless silver bells swayed gently above marble walkways.

The city wasn't merely alive.

It was peaceful.

Four young men sat beneath a massive white tree whose branches stretched across half the courtyard.

The First Son leaned comfortably against the trunk, lazily tossing an apple into the air before catching it again.

The stranger sat nearby with several books stacked around him despite the obvious picnic.

Kael's ancient self rested on the grass while sketching designs across a large sheet of parchment.

The fourth brother lay flat on his back watching clouds drift across the sky.

None of them spoke for several minutes.

They simply enjoyed the afternoon.

Finally, the fourth brother smiled.

"What do you think comes after the stars?"

The First Son caught the apple again.

"More stars."

The stranger never looked up from his book.

"Statistically speaking, probably more space."

The fourth brother laughed.

"You two have absolutely no imagination."

Then...

He looked toward Kael.

Toward his ancient self.

"And you?"

The memory-version of Kael stopped drawing.

He looked toward the endless blue sky.

Toward the distant stars barely visible beneath daylight.

Then smiled.

"I think..."

The memory trembled.

"...someone is looking back."

Everything shattered.

Reality returned.

Kael inhaled sharply.

The warmth of the sun disappeared.

The scent of flowers vanished.

Only the underground prison remained.

Yet tears had appeared in his eyes before he even realized it.

He didn't understand why.

He had only seen four brothers enjoying a peaceful afternoon.

Nothing tragic had happened.

Nothing dramatic.

Yet somehow...

That simple memory hurt more than every battlefield combined.

Because it showed exactly what had been lost.

The smiling shadow watched him quietly.

Then, for the first time...

It spoke his forgotten name.

The sound echoed throughout the underground city.

The bells rang violently.

The black mark exploded with silver light.

Every guardian knelt.

Every rune ignited.

Every chain surrounding the prison trembled.

Yet no one else reacted.

No one.

The First Son remained still.

The Sleeper showed no expression.

The stranger simply closed his eyes.

Kael slowly looked around in confusion.

"Didn't you hear it?"

The three ancient beings stared at him silently.

Finally, the Sleeper answered.

"We heard..."

The ancient being's golden eyes settled gently upon him.

"...only silence."

The smile disappeared from the shadow's face.

Its expression became strangely solemn.

Then it whispered one final sentence.

"Of course..."

"...only you can hear your true name."
