Chapter 58 - Chapter 58: A Different Beginning

The academy did not feel the same the next morning.

The noise was still there—students moving between buildings, voices overlapping, the distant sound of training—but it no longer reached Kael the same way. Something had shifted. Not outside.

Inside.

The tournament was over.

But its result had changed everything.

Kael walked through the main path of the academy grounds, his pace steady, his gaze forward. The path that once felt open now felt narrower—not because it had changed, but because fewer people walked it.

Only a few.

The Top Twenty.

Around him, the others moved as well, but there was distance now. Not physical—but clear. Conversations were quieter. Movements more controlled. No one rushed. No one wasted energy.

Because now—

Everyone understood where they stood.

Aren walked beside him, stretching his arms as he glanced around. "Feels different," he said. "Like everyone's pretending not to look at us."

"They are looking," Lyra replied calmly.

Aren smirked slightly. "Yeah… figured."

Draven said nothing.

But his gaze moved once across the surroundings.

Measuring.

Always measuring.

They reached the main hall.

The same place they had entered when they first arrived at the academy.

But this time—

It wasn't crowded.

Only a few stood inside.

Twenty.

That was all.

Kael stepped in without hesitation, his eyes moving once across the room.

He recognized most of them.

Cassian stood near the far side, leaning slightly against a pillar, his expression calm, but his eyes alert. Not resting.

Never resting.

Not far from him stood Elias Thorn.

Kael's fourth roommate.

The quiet one.

Tall, slender, with dark brown hair and sharp, observant eyes. He wore simple robes, but the faint fluctuations of mana around him made it clear—

He was a magician.

And not a weak one.

Elias glanced at Kael briefly.

Then gave a small nod.

No words.

But understanding.

On the other side stood a broader figure.

Rein.

The brother of the girl who had traveled with Kael to the academy.

His presence was heavier than before. His stance grounded, his movements steady. A swordsman.

And stronger than when Kael had first met him.

Rein noticed him as well.

His eyes sharpened slightly.

Then relaxed.

Respect.

Not rivalry.

Not yet.

And then—

Kael's gaze shifted.

Elaris Vareth.

She stood near the front.

Still.

Calm.

Untouched by the tension around her.

The space near her felt… separate.

Not because people avoided her.

Because they understood.

That level—

Was different.

Kael looked at her for a moment.

Then looked away.

Because watching alone would not close that distance.

A presence shifted at the front.

The instructor stepped forward.

But this time—

He was not alone.

Three figures stood behind him.

Not students.

Not observers.

Something else.

Their presence alone changed the atmosphere of the room.

Heavier.

Sharper.

More defined.

Aren exhaled quietly. "…Those are the teachers?"

Lyra's eyes narrowed slightly. "Not normal instructors."

Kael understood immediately.

These were the ones.

The top.

The ones who would guide—

Or break.

The instructor spoke.

"You have been selected as the Top Twenty."

No reaction came.

Because everyone already knew.

"This status grants you personal quarters and access to advanced training resources."

A brief pause followed.

Then—

"The Top Three will step forward."

No hesitation.

Elaris moved first.

Then Kael.

Then Cassian.

They stood at the front.

Side by side.

But not equal.

Not yet.

The three figures behind the instructor stepped forward.

One moved toward Elaris.

A woman.

Tall.

Calm.

Her presence was overwhelming—not through force, but through control. The air around her felt stable, as if nothing could disturb it.

"Lady Seraphine," someone whispered behind.

A master.

No—

Beyond that.

She stopped in front of Elaris.

Studied her.

Then nodded once.

"Fourth circle," she said quietly. "Stable."

Elaris met her gaze.

"Yes."

Seraphine's lips curved slightly.

"Good. You will train under me."

No hesitation.

No question.

Elaris nodded.

"Understood."

The second figure stepped forward.

Toward Cassian.

A man with sharp features and a cold gaze. His presence felt like a blade—precise, unforgiving.

"Master Vael."

Cassian straightened slightly.

Their eyes met.

No words were exchanged for a moment.

Then—

"You think too much," Vael said.

Cassian didn't deny it.

"Then stop thinking."

A pause.

Cassian nodded.

"…Understood."

The last figure stepped forward.

Toward Kael.

He didn't feel overwhelming.

He didn't feel sharp.

He didn't feel anything.

And that—

Was the problem.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

Because absence—

Was harder to read than presence.

The man stopped in front of him.

Old.

But not weak.

His gaze rested on Kael.

Not judging.

Not measuring.

Observing.

"…You're the one who moved inside her range," he said.

Kael didn't respond.

Because that wasn't a question.

The man smiled faintly.

"Good."

A brief silence followed.

Then—

"You'll train under me."

Kael held his gaze.

"…What should I call you?"

The man turned slightly.

As if the question didn't matter.

"…Call me Orion."

That was all.

No title.

No explanation.

But the name alone—

Carried weight.

Behind them, the others watched.

Not openly.

But closely.

Because they understood.

This was where the real difference began.

The instructor spoke again.

"The rest of you will be assigned to advanced classes. Your progress will be monitored."

No one complained.

No one questioned.

Because they had seen the gap.

And they knew—

This was only the beginning.

The gathering ended quickly.

No ceremony.

No delay.

Because at this level—

Time mattered more than words.

As they stepped out, Aren exhaled loudly. "Yeah… okay. That just got serious."

Lyra nodded slightly. "It was always serious."

Draven glanced toward Kael.

"Don't fall behind."

Kael didn't answer.

Because he wasn't thinking about them.

His gaze shifted slightly.

Elaris stood at a distance.

Speaking briefly with Seraphine.

Then—

She looked at him.

Not long.

Just a moment.

But enough.

Not distant anymore.

Not unreachable.

Just ahead.

Cassian walked past him, stopping for a second.

"Orion, huh," he said. "You got the strange one."

Kael glanced at him.

"…You noticed."

Cassian smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

Then he walked away.

Kael remained still for a moment longer.

Then—

He turned.

Orion was already walking.

Not looking back.

Kael followed.

No hesitation.

Because this—

Was the next step.

The academy had changed.

The path had narrowed.

And from here on—

There would be no one to follow.

Only someone to surpass.
