The soft click of the door unlocking echoed, followed by the sound of the doorknob being twisted.
Dressed in a light blue shirt that hugged her delicate figure and perfect curves, Kayla stepped out with a warm smile on her face.
Noticing her husband, she hugged him and collected the bag he held in his hand.
"How was work today, sweetie?"
"It was alright," Amon said, stepping inside. "We excavated a high-grade mana stone today."
"Really?"
"Yeah, we were given a large amount of commission and compensation for our hard work."
"Oh…" Kayla nodded and changed the topic. "I made rice and some steaks."
Grinning, she continued, "I also tried learning how to make tacos like the Italians. Try it out and tell me what you think."
Amon raised a brow in surprise. "That's lovely of you, honey."
He gave her another kiss on the lips and was led to the dining area.
Kayla quickly served the meal with practiced movements. Before long, a bowl of steaming hot rice, along with a plate filled with steaks, was served in front of him.
Finally, she brought another dish with her. Atop the plate were some tacos with caviar toppings.
Amon was slightly taken aback by the extravagance but didn't mind it.
"Here, tell me what you think." Kayla placed the plate in front of Amon and looked at him with expectant eyes, waiting for his opinion.
Taking a deep breath, Amon picked up a piece of taco and placed it in his mouth.
Then, he began chewing, savoring the bite.
His eyes widened slightly the moment it melted in his mouth, followed by the crunchiness of the taco.
Raising a thumbs up, Amon nodded, signaling that it was excellent.
Kayla immediately broke into a smile, her face heating up in excitement.
"Ha… haha, let me put on the TV. I'll join you shortly." She said, swiftly heading towards the parlor so there'd be some background noise while they dined.
Immediately, the TV came on. The news anchor, a female dressed in a red suit, came into view.
After increasing the volume a little, enough not to disturb the sleeping Ciara, Kayla returned to the dining area.
Smiling slightly, she dug into the meal, eating calmly and without any hurry.
"What's your day been about?" Amon asked coolly while placing a piece of meat in his mouth.
Kayla picked up a cup of water and soothed her throat before lightly gisting Amon.
"Nothing much. Aside from taking care of Ciara, I'm pretty much bored throughout the day. Can't wait to resume work."
"Sorry for stressing you." Amon said, gently drumming his fingers while tapping his fork into a piece of meat.
Kayla was taken aback by Amon's remark.
"What's suddenly gotten into you?" she punched him lightly and chuckled.
Finally, she burst out laughing, and Amon joined her.
Kayla took a moment to recover, and after she did, they continued their meal.
Quietly, she said, "Don't say something like that again. We're meant to handle everything together as a couple. I don't mind a little boredom."
Amon didn't say anything, but warmth bloomed in his heart.
Before either of them could say anything more, Kayla's attention was drawn to the TV as the news anchor's words echoed in the quiet room.
"Today, at Ford Street, Cold Moon District, the butcher struck again, killing three civilians in broad daylight."
"The armed forces have tried apprehending him, all to no avail. Anyone with information on this mysterious attacker should provide the corresponding details."
"The armed forces have issued a bounty of 1 million dollars for whoever can provide accurate information on him. He is a threat to everyone, and everyone should be on high alert at all times."
"For the following videos, viewer discretion is advised. If you have a child, or someone sensitive to gruesome sights, you might want to either turn off the TV or take their attention away from it."
Following which, the news anchor began displaying a few videos from the web.
The first video displayed the man with a cat-faced mask over his face, draped in a black leather long coat, as he brutally sliced a man into two.
The scene transitioned into one where he gruesomely pulled a woman's head from her body.
Following which, the scene transitioned once more to a video that had been caught live just five days ago.
It showed the butcher pulling a man's arm right out of his body.
All of the videos ended with the butcher using his signature move…
After gathering the bodies, he pulled out a bottle of fuel and lit them all on fire, causing them to turn to ashes.
Then, his back filled with loneliness and the weight of the world, he would walk in the opposite direction of the camera.
He was swift, ruthless, and extremely efficient.
No one he caught ever came out alive.
"How terrifying…" cold sweat broke out on Kayla's face as she whispered, her attention completely pulled into the TV.
"The butcher?" Amon asked, his voice tinged with curiosity.
"Yeah… didn't you see the news?" Kayla pointed at the TV. "Having killed so many people in such a fashion, how can he possibly still live his life so calmly? It's as though he sees humans as insignificant."
Amon paused briefly before calmly replying, his expression unchanged.
"It doesn't seem that way to me. Who can tell what really happened?"
Kayla shot Amon a sharp glare. "Why are you trying to defend him? It's clear that he's killing innocents and needs to be apprehended!"
Amon shook his head with a smile but didn't say anything.
'The armed forces, huh…' He'd known the government was corrupted, but he didn't expect it to be to this extent.
'There's no need to bother with them for now. I just need to eliminate all traces of corruption in the Cold Moon District to ensure my wife and daughter are safe wherever they go. After that, I can think of dealing with them.'
Amon nodded internally at his decision.
Kayla stared at Amon in confusion, her mind filled with questions.
'What's going on? Has he met the butcher before?'
Her lips parted as she asked curiously, "Do you know something that I don't?"
Amon stared at Kayla, slightly taken aback, then realized what she was asking and laughed lightly.
"I just think that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover."
Kayla fell silent.
Meanwhile, in Amon's mind, the system screen came into view.
[Master, you've not used your fate point for today. Do you wish to sign in?]
Pondering slightly, Amon ultimately decided to sign in. After all, for the past few days, he'd been enhancing his skills.
[Congratulations! You have received…]
