Chapter 23: The Age of the Dragon — Ascension, Rewards, and the Echo of the North

The night before the ritual was restless, fleeting, and charged with an unnatural electricity.

Few managed to sleep in the subterranean refuge of Skull Rock. In the tents pitched over the obsidian, children whispered stories of ancient dragons and blood-red moons. The elders, their gnarled hands clutching broken talismans, prayed silently to the ancestors lost in the Dawn City massacre. The warriors polished their black scale armor and sharpened their steel late into the early hours of the morning, well aware that they were standing exactly on the thin, sharp boundary between the impossible and the inevitable.

In every corner of the cavern, the oppressive and euphoric sensation was exactly the same: the known world was about to fracture forever.

At dawn, before the desert sun began to heat the white sands outside, Samael Morningstar stood immovable before the massive, carved bone high altar.

The entire clan—over three hundred and thirty souls—had been summoned. They formed perfect, silent concentric circles in the vast central plaza. No one uttered a single word; the only sound filling the space was the dull echo of hundreds of racing heartbeats and the whistle of the wind brushing the stone outside.

Samael looked up. In the gloom of his mind, the System was the only entity accompanying him in that momentous instant, unfurling its interface in a gold so bright it threatened to blind his inner eye.

[Accumulated Clan Luck: 20,070 / 20,000][Mysterious Luck Chest: Unlocked and ready for materialization.][Absolute Ascension Condition: Met.][Supreme Event Available: "The Awakening of the Dragon and the Pillar of Heaven".][Does the Host wish to consume 20,000 Clan Luck points to initiate the Level 2 Ascension Ritual and claim all sealed rewards?][System Note: The rewards are of legendary grade. This act will irreversibly alter the Karmic Laws and the clan's destiny in this Lower World. Proceed?]

Samael closed his eyes for a second, feeling the weight of the gazes at his back. Kael's blind loyalty, Seraphina's frozen devotion, Cedric's calculating mind, the twins' fierceness.

He opened his eyes. His violet irises flared with the reddish light of dawn filtering through the upper cracks.

"For the past they stole from us, and for the invincible future we are going to forge with their bones," Samael whispered, his deep voice resonating against the stone.

Mentally, he gave the absolute command: Yes. Consume it all.

The instant the command was processed, time in Skull Rock seemed to stop completely. The gravity in the room vanished for a microsecond.

And then, the world erupted.

An immense pillar of golden and crimson light, pure and blinding, detonated from Samael's very blood. It wasn't ordinary fire or Qi; it was condensed primordial energy. The pillar ascended like a divine spear a hundred meters thick, piercing the solid obsidian rock ceiling as if it were wet paper, and shot toward the firmament, splitting the dawn clouds in two.

The earth did not tremble with the violence of an earthquake, but with the rhythmic, overwhelming pulse of a giant heart. The entire plateau vibrated. The ancestral runes of the Void Flame defensive array overloaded, burning with a tangible brilliance that illuminated the desert for miles around.

The Morningstars fell to their knees. Some wept without knowing why, others laughed, choked by the shock; all were being crushed by a pressure so ancient and benevolent that many felt, physically and spiritually, the presence of their own ancestors brushing against their tired souls.

In the clear sky above the cavern, the scattered clouds began to swirl violently. With a thunderclap that produced no sound but made mortals' noses bleed leagues away, the figure of a colossal Ethereal Dragon formed in the stratosphere.

It had scales of pure black obsidian and pure violet hues, violet eyes flashing with crimson tones, and a black crown with touches of violet. The dragon lowered its massive head toward the desert and roared.

The roar was not an acoustic wave; it was a wave of karmic energy that swept through the soul of every clan member. The golden shockwave passed through the rock and struck them. It tore impurities from their meridians, purged toxins from their livers, healed old war wounds that had set badly, and raised the density of their cores to an absurd level.

And then, the symphony of ascension began.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

Like firecrackers popping at a divine festival, the sound of bottlenecks breaking echoed throughout the cave. Three hundred warriors, elders, and children experienced simultaneous Qi explosions.

[Bloodline Synchrony Activated: All clan members receive immediate +2 Cultivation Stages (Maximum benefit limit: Transcendent Stage 6).]

The disciples who were barely at Meridian Opening screamed in pain and ecstasy as they felt their Dantians form, skipping straight to the Qi Sea Realm. The veterans who had been stagnating for decades wept tears of purified blood as they felt their spirits detach from the flesh, entering the Transcendent Realm.

Kael, kneeling before the altar, gritted his teeth as his dark red hair floated without wind. His Golden aura shone with a blinding intensity. He felt his bones crack and redensify. An ancient voice inside him promised that the "lost fire" of his origins would very soon burn again. He advanced two stages at once, consolidating his lethal power.

Violeta, kneeling beside Eris, dropped her rapier. She felt the murderous frost and the scorching sun finally reconcile in the middle of her chest, balancing her Taboo Red Destiny. Today, my parents rest in peace, Violeta thought, as a freezing tear rolled down her cheek.

Grand Elder Lilith slumped forward, leaning on her single arm, overwhelmed by a pressure that was breaking and healing her at the same time. She felt a phantom itch, burning and unbearable, in the stump of her amputated arm. For the first time in centuries... the ancestors have forgiven us, the iron elder sobbed.

Seraphina, standing stoically near the altar, was enveloped in a whirlwind of freezing blue light. She did not advance two stages like the rest due to the extreme nature of her physique, but her sealed memories of a past imperial life flickered violently in her mind. For a fraction of a second, the look she gave Samael was not that of a young girl from Dawn City; it was that of the Absolute Empress who had once defied Heaven and ruled worlds.

While the clan assimilated the physical miracle, Samael's mind was a chaos of classified information and divine rewards. The System did not hide its loot; it displayed the exact descriptions of what he had just stolen from destiny.

And finally, the item Samael had been waiting for to break his own mortal chains:

[Primordial Dragon Blood Core Crystal: Allows the Host to shatter the Transcendent Realm Bottleneck and advance instantly to the Origin Realm.]

Samael did not hesitate. He extracted the pulsating red crystal from his Soul Vault inventory and crushed it into the center of his chest.

"Today, this clan needs more than a leader. It needs a damn living shield."

The crystal melted through his skin and sternum, embedding itself directly into his heart.

The physical world vanished for Samael. The pain was immediate, absolute, and tearing. He felt his Qi Sea expand violently, crashing against the walls of his meridians until they cracked, only to be healed and strengthened a microsecond later by the Primordial Blood.

The mortal limit of Transcendence shattered into pieces.

The energy of the Void and the Blood fought inside him, colliding and finally merging into a single, massive river of dark violet and crimson Qi that began to flow not only in his body but connected directly with the environmental energy of the Dragon Bone Desert. He had achieved fusion with the environment.

A dull, gravitational roar shook the central plaza. Samael rose into the air, floating without the need for wind techniques, sustained by the sheer power of his new Realm. Translucent dragons of violet Qi spun around him like protective satellites.

The core in his chest shone like a hyper-compressed sphere of obsidian and pure gold.

[System: Qualitative Breakthrough Completed.][Samael Morningstar: Origin Realm, Stage 9.][Vitality, spiritual perception, and Qi reserves increased x10.][True Flight Unlocked.][Combat Alert: Despite advancing to the Origin Realm and the overwhelming physical superiority of the Primordial Blood, the Host lacks a 'Conceptual Law'. Samael read the warning floating in the air. He clenched his fists, feeling the power to destroy mountains in his arms, but he knew the System was right. Brute force didn't cut concepts. He would need to intelligently use the Gacha Ticket or Elowen's pills in the coming hours.

But before he could descend, the floor of the immense cavern began to tremble with a terrifying seismic violence.

"Back! Clear the central plaza!" Xylia roared, pushing the disciples away.

The solid obsidian rock cracked and burst into a thousand pieces. From the depths of the earth, like a black sword piercing the surface, emerged the Dragon Tower Pavilion.

It grew at a breakneck speed before everyone's astonished eyes. Five stories high, forged from a material that looked like liquid black jade and indestructible red wooden beams that bled spiritual energy. The roof tiles of the pagoda were shaped like overlapping dragon scales, and at the peak, a massive sphere of crimson light began to pulsate, absorbing the desert Qi like a whirlpool.

Skull Rock was no longer a simple cave. It was now an impregnable fortress, crowned by a divine monument.

The ascension energy pillar and the appearance of the Ethereal Dragon in the skies were not discreet events. They were visible for endless minutes from all the border towns, nomad caravans, and desert ruins. And their echo crossed entire continents.

Thousands of kilometers to the North, in the Valois Fortress:

In the vast, ornate throne room carved from ice, the family Patriarch, Duke Alaric Valois, observed the continental strategic map floating over the table. His aura, crushing and cold, denoted his level as a Semi-Saint.

Suddenly, a massive disturbance in the world's Qi made the ice table crack. Alaric looked up toward the immense windows facing south. His blue eyes, cold as death, reflected the faint golden flash splitting the sky on the distant horizon.

The Valois Patriarch clenched his fist, freezing the air around him.

"The ascension has begun..." Alaric murmured, his icy voice dripping with deep hatred. "Those dogs from Dawn City have gone much further and much faster than I ever foresaw. That level of celestial phenomena means they have unearthed an ancient heritage."

Behind him, a family espionage master, kneeling and trembling, handed over a scroll.

"My Duke, the Protector of the Frozen Abyss and the Winter Guard are three days' march from the target. However, we have intercepted high-level array fluctuations at the enemy base."

Alaric turned sharply, his cloak brushing the frozen floor.

"Three days is too much time if they've just obtained a power of that caliber. Deploy the 'Dune Shadow' immediately."

The spy paled. The Dune Shadow was an independent mercenary with a terrifying reputation—a ruthless assassin at the Semi-Saint Stage 1 level, hired by the Valois at an astronomical price for his mastery of the Law of Concealment in the desert.

"Pay him whatever he demands," Alaric ordered. "I want him to use his sand portals to reach Skull Rock before midnight tonight. His mission is not to annihilate the army; his mission is to decapitate Samael Morningstar and destroy whatever it is they just summoned. When our Protector arrives with the army, I want him to find nothing but ashes to sweep away."

In the distant and mystical Purple Light Sect (Grade 7 Faction):

In a floating pavilion, suspended among purple clouds heavy with lightning, a young man of immaculate, graceful, and lethal appearance was meditating. It was Valerius Valois, the Holy Son of the sect and the primary heir of the Northern family.

Dressed in violet silk robes that hid monstrous strength, Valerius slowly opened his eyes. An old man with a face as sharp as a dagger and golden eyes—his master and a powerful Saint of the sect—floated down in front of him.

The old man looked south, stroking his long white beard as the Qi fluctuated violently around him.

"The Dragon's aura has awakened in the badlands, Valerius," the old Saint mused. "Are you prepared for your family to face the consequences of not pulling that weed out by the roots when they had the chance?"

Valerius stood up, flashing a crooked smile overflowing with imperial arrogance.

"A weed that grows tall only makes the harvest more entertaining, Master. When my father sends the head of that supposed 'Sovereign' to our hall, Morningstar blood will serve as the perfect foundation for me to reach the Saint Realm."

The old man nodded slowly.

"Do not underestimate a cornered bloodline, boy. The one who carries the Dragon and the Void in his blood can become a global calamity or a divine miracle."

Valerius squeezed the jade ring on his finger, exuding a frigid killing intent.

"Miracles die fast when Saints and assassins decide to go hunting in the dark, Master. That desert will be their tomb."

Back in the plaza of Skull Rock, the chaos of the celebration was beginning to find its order. Samael, floating gently to the ground, landed in front of the carved doors of the newborn Dragon Tower. He was physically exhausted by the violent expansion of his meridians, but his spirit was undefeated and burned with the fire of the Origin Realm.

He raised his hand. The clamor of three hundred disciples, the clashing of weapons, and the shouts of euphoria ceased in an instant, falling into a silence of absolute reverence.

"Look around you!" Samael ordered, his amplified voice echoing in every corner of the cavern, bouncing off the walls of the black jade tower. "Today, the surname Morningstar ceases to be a cause for pity whispered in alleys. Today, we have ceased to be exiled orphans and have become a living legend."

Samael lowered his hand, pointing to the heavy doors of the fortress.

"Celebrate it today! Eat the meat of the beasts, drink the spiritual wine, and assimilate the power coursing through your veins! Because the whole world has seen the light of our roar. The scum of the continent and the tyrants of the North will come to try and steal our glory and extinguish this light."

Samael's violet eyes shone with a fierceness that made the clan's heart beat in unison.

"But I swear to you, by my Primordial Blood and by the souls of all those who fell in Dawn City... that when the Valois people arrive at these doors with their assassins and their eternal winter, they are not going to find defenseless ruins."

Samael unsheathed his Odachi, driving it into the obsidian floor with a loud clang.

"They will strike against a wall forged in the flames of the Dragon and the darkness of the Void, and they will break their teeth trying to bite it!"

A deafening, unanimous roar erupted from the throats of the Morningstar Legion, shaking the dust from the cavern ceiling. The new energy vibrated in every cell of their bodies, the desert night glowed around the imposing newborn Tower, and the eyes of all the supreme powers of the continent, for the first time in centuries, were turned with dread and greed toward Skull Rock.

The era of survival was over. The era of total war had just begun.
