Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 : " WHERE CHOICE HAS CONSEQUENCES "

The moment they crossed—Everything tightened...Not the space...Not the ground...But reality itself.

Kaizen felt it instantly.

This place didn't bend...Didn't adapt...Didn't observe...It was...Final...Absolute.

"…Okay," he muttered under his breath. "…This is different."

The goblin walked ahead.

"…More."

But even it—..Had slowed... Just slightly.

Aeris stood beside Kaizen, her gaze scanning the path ahead—not searching, not analyzing—

Measuring.

"…No corrections," she said quietly.

"…No reactions."

Kaizen nodded.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…No second chances either."

The path stretched into a vast expanse—no walls, no sky, no clear boundary. Just a dim, endless horizon where the ground met nothingness.

And yet—It didn't feel empty...It felt…... Decided.

Every step they took echoed—not in sound, but in consequence. The ground beneath their feet didn't shift or ripple—but something about it recorded them.

Like every movement mattered.

Like every choice—Stayed.... Kaizen exhaled slowly.

"…I don't like places that keep score."

The goblin tilted its head.

"…Then win."

Kaizen smirked faintly.

"…Working on it."

Aeris stepped forward slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…Not win."

She looked ahead...Her voice steady.

"…Be certain."

Silence... That—Was worse...They walked...No interruptions...No attacks...No illusions.

Just distance...And weight...Kaizen felt it building with every step...Not pressure...Not danger.

Something else...Responsibility.

"…This place…" he muttered.

"…It doesn't test us."

Aeris nodded.

"…It reflects us."

Kaizen frowned.

"…I liked the tests better."

The goblin spoke.

"…More."

Of course...Then—The path ended...Abruptly...No warning...No transition...Just—Nothing ahead.

Kaizen stopped at the edge...Looked down...There was no void...No darkness...No depth.

Just—Absence. "…That's not helpful."

The goblin stepped forward...Right to the edge... Looking.

"…Jump."

Kaizen snorted.

"…Of course you'd say that."

Aeris stepped closer...Her gaze focused. "…No."

A pause.

"…It's not asking us to move forward."

Kaizen glanced at her.

"…Then what?"

She looked at the ground beneath their feet.

"…It's asking us to choose how."

Silence.

Kaizen exhaled.

"…You're starting to sound like that thing."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"…Maybe it wasn't wrong."

Kaizen didn't like that...Not one bit...The goblin spoke again.

"…More."

Aeris shook her head slightly.

"…If we move without deciding—"

A pause.

"…This place will decide for us."

Kaizen crossed his arms.

"…And I'm guessing we don't want that."

"…No."

Silence stretched...The edge waited...Still...Patient...

Kaizen stepped closer...Looking at the absence ahead.

"…So what."

A pause.

"…We just think really hard and something happens?"

Aeris didn't answer.

Instead—She closed her eyes...Her presence shifted...Not outward...Inward...Focused...Defined.

Kaizen watched her.

"…You're serious."

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…Try."

Kaizen exhaled.

"…Fine."

He stepped closer to the edge...Closed his eyes...For a moment—Nothing.

Then—Something...Not a vision...Not a voice...A feeling...Direction...Not given...Chosen.

Kaizen opened his eyes...And the path—Changed.

A single step appeared ahead...Solid...Real...Waiting.

Kaizen smirked faintly.

"…Huh."

The goblin stepped forward instantly—Onto the step...No hesitation.

"…More."

Of course...Another step formed...Then another...A path—Building itself—One decision at a time.

Aeris opened her eyes.

Watching it.

"…It responds to certainty."

Kaizen nodded.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Then let's not hesitate."

They moved...Each step forming only after they committed...No looking back...No second guesses.

The path grew...Extending into the unknown....And for the first time.

Kaizen felt something different.

Not resistance...Not pressure...Not even challenge...Control...Not over the world...Over himself.

The goblin moved ahead...Still the fastest...Still the most direct.

But even it—Was choosing now...Each step intentional....Each movement deliberate.

Aeris walked beside Kaizen...Closer...Her presence steady...No flicker...No doubt.

"…You've changed," she said quietly.

Kaizen glanced at her.

"…Yeah?"

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…You're not just reacting anymore."

He smirked faintly.

"…Guess I finally caught up."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"…No."

A pause.

"…You chose to."

Silence.

That word again...But this time—It didn't feel heavy...It felt—Right.—Then.

The path stopped forming...Mid-step...Kaizen froze.!

"…That's new."

The goblin tilted its head.

"…Why."

Aeris frowned slightly.

"…Something's interfering."

Kaizen looked ahead.

And this time—He saw it...A figure.

Standing in the distance....Not emerging...Not forming...Already there...Waiting.

Kaizen's eyes narrowed.

"…We're not alone."

The goblin stepped forward.

"…More."

But the step didn't form.

Aeris's voice dropped.

"…No."

A pause.

"…We can't move until we face it."

Kaizen exhaled slowly.

"…Of course we can't."

The figure didn't move...Didn't react.!!Just—Watched.

Kaizen stepped forward anyway...Forcing it....The ground resisted.

For the first time since entering this place—There was resistance...Real...Absolute.

"…Yeah," he muttered.

"…That's not happening."

Aeris stepped beside him.

Her gaze fixed on the figure.

"…It's not blocking the path."

A pause.

"…It is the path."

Silence.

Kaizen cracked his neck slightly.

"…Alright."

A pause.

"…Let's see what you are."

The figure moved...Slowly...Deliberately...Each step it took—Didn't create sound..

.Didn't shift the space. But something about it—Changed the weight of everything.

Kaizen felt it.

That same pressure as before—But deeper...More personal.

"…This one's different," he muttered.

The goblin spoke.

"…Strong."

Aeris didn't respond....Her eyes were locked on it. "…No…"

A pause.

"…It's not strong."

Kaizen frowned.

"…Then what?"

Her voice lowered.

"…It's certain."

The figure stopped....Close enough now to see clearly....And Kaizen's expression hardened.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

It looked like him...Not exactly...Not perfectly.

But close enough. .Sharper...Calmer...More defined.

A version of him—Without hesitation...Without doubt...Without resistance.

The figure spoke.

"…You are inefficient."

Kaizen smirked faintly.

"…And you're annoying."

The figure didn't react.

"…You delay outcomes."

"…I change them."

"…You weaken them."

"…I choose them."

Silence.... The goblin tilted its head.

"…Same?"

Aeris shook her head. "…No."

A pause.

"…This is what happens when he stops questioning."

Kaizen exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…I don't like that version of me."

The figure stepped forward.

"…Irrelevant."

Kaizen stepped forward as well.

The ground held.

This time—The path didn't need to form...Because this—Was the decision.

"…Let's see what you've got."

The figure moved...Perfect...Precise...No wasted motion...No hesitation.

Kaizen reacted—Not matching it...Not copying it...Changing...Adapting...Choosing.

Their clash—Was immediate...Sharp....Controlled....And for the first time.

Kaizen felt it...The difference...The other him—Didn't hesitate...Didn't question...Didn't change.

And because of that—He didn't grow....Kaizen smirked mid-clash.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…You're strong."

The strike came again—Perfect...Predictable.

Kaizen moved—Not to block—But to break the pattern.

His motion shifted mid-action—Unstable.

Unclean...Unpredictable...The strike missed...For the first time...The figure paused...A fraction.

"…Deviation."

Kaizen grinned.

"…Exactly."

The goblin stepped forward. "…More."

Aeris watched.... Her voice quiet."…This is your choice."

Kaizen nodded. "…Yeah."

A pause.

"…And I'm not becoming that."

The clash continued...Faster now...Sharper...But different.

Kaizen wasn't trying to win...He was choosing how to fight. And with every choice.

The figure became less certain...Less absolute...Less—Perfect...Until.

It stopped...Completely...Its form flickering slightly.

"…Inconsistent," it said.

Kaizen exhaled.

"…Human."

Silence.

Then—The figure dissolved...Not defeated...Not destroyed.

But—Rejected...The path reformed instantly..Clear...Open...Waiting.

Kaizen rolled his shoulders.

"…Alright."

A pause.

"…That was personal."

The goblin stepped forward. "…More."

Of course.

Aeris moved beside him.

Closer.

"…You chose well."

Kaizen smirked faintly."…Don't sound so surprised."

She didn't respond....But her presence—Said enough.

They stepped forward...The path continuing...Deeper...Further.

And this time—There was no hesitation...No doubt...No resistance.

Only—Choice.—But far ahead—Beyond where the path could form.

Something waited...Not watching...Not testing...Not reflecting.

Something that didn't care about their choices...Something—That would decide for them...

If Kaizen encountered a "perfect" version of himself and rejected it,

will what awaits him next be a stronger version…?

Or an enemy that doesn't rely on choice at all ?
