Chapter 3 - New Ability

「Foreign objects detected within the soul structure. Quantity: 2.」

「Condition for second awakening… met.」

Luke remembered the novel's awakening conditions—discovery, mastery, creation, and treasures. He hadn't expected to meet any of them like this.

The Will's attention sharpened around the two shards—Time and Space—like fingers closing around a stone.

「Classifying… origin treasures.」

Treasures.

Not contaminants. Not threats.

Treasures.

「Initiating extraction of origin essence.」

Something shifted deep inside him, at the core of his soul. The two fragments began to warm—not physically, but with process. Something was being drawn out, slowly and carefully, like squeezing a single drop of nectar from a sealed fruit.

「Time fragment… extracting…」

A beat.

「…10%.」

「Insufficient soul power for deeper extraction. Remaining 90% will be sealed within the soul. Accessible at higher soul power thresholds.」

Luke felt it happen. Most of the Time fragment went quiet—locked away. Still there, heavy, but dormant. Only a fraction remained active: a thin thread of silver.

「Space fragment… extracting…」

The same measured pull.

「…10%.」

「Insufficient soul power for deeper extraction. Remaining 90% will be sealed within the soul. Accessible at higher soul power thresholds.」

Another locking. Another dormancy.

A thin thread of dark violet remained accessible—the barest whisper of spatial power. The rest was buried, sealed by the Will itself.

Luke's mind raced even in stillness.

Only ten per cent each. Because my soul isn't strong enough. Sixty-two points—that's the bottleneck.

But it's not gone. It's inside me. Locked. Waiting.

If I get stronger—

The voice interrupted.

「Scanning core soul element.」

A brief silence.

「Core element identified: Ice.」

Expected. The original's power. The foundation.

Then—

「Scanning abilities linked to core element.」

Another pause. Longer.

「Abilities found: 2.」

Luke's awareness stuttered.

Two?

The original had one ability. Ice Manipulation. That was all he knew. That was all anyone knew about.

「Ability 1: Ice Manipulation.」

Yes.

「Ability 2: Ice Seal.」

Luke's mind went blank.

Ice Seal.

He knew that name—not from the original's memories, but from the novel.

Ice Seal: the ability to permanently inscribe ice runes onto another person's soul, sealing their power forever. The technique the Family wanted to exploit. The reason they recruited him. The method that would cost him his life.

And it had been inside the original this entire time.

Dormant. Unknown. Hidden.

Dual abilities from one awakening were supposed to be almost impossible. One element, one ability—that was the rule. The novel had mentioned dual abilities only once, as a throwaway line: so rare that even the Bureau and bloodline families had only a handful of cases.

But the original Luke had broken that rule.

And never knew.

He'd carried Ice Seal like a live grenade in his pocket, unaware the pin was already loose.

The original never knew he had it.

But the Family did.

How?

Luke couldn't answer that now. But the question burned.

If the original never manifested Ice Seal—never used it, never felt it, never even knew it was there—then how had the Family identified it?

What did they know about his power that he didn't?

The voice continued, indifferent to his panic.

「Core element: Ice. Abilities: Ice Manipulation, Ice Seal.」

「Foreign treasure essences available: Time (10%), Space (10%).」

「Compatibility assessment… complete.」

「Ice is designated as the base element.」

「Time and Space essences will be integrated into existing abilities as evolutionary catalysts.」

「Initiating second awakening.」

A final line. Calm. Absolute.

「Begin.」

The pain was instant—absolute.

It started in his chest and radiated outward like cracks in breaking ice. Every nerve ignited. Every muscle locked.

Luke dropped to his knees. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Inside him, the frozen ocean of ice—the vast, deep power he had barely touched minutes ago—shattered.

Not destroyed.

Restructured.

The ice broke into a million crystalline pieces, and the threads of Time and Space—those slim ten-per-cent fragments—rushed into the gaps, filling them, merging, becoming one.

Luke saw it behind his closed eyes.

Ice—blue and white and endless.

But now it was threaded with something else: lines of silver (Time) winding through the crystals like veins in marble, lines of dark violet (Space) folding the edges of the ice into impossible geometries.

Three forces. Three domains.

Weaving into a single structure.

Not three separate powers.

One power, expressed across three dimensions.

Luke's body spasmed. Frost erupted from his skin—but this time it was different.

The ice that spread across the floor didn't just freeze.

It stopped.

Water droplets dripping from the ceiling's melting frost froze in midair—not by cold, but by stillness. Time itself paused around them. They hung suspended: perfect spheres caught between one second and the next.

And the frost on the floor didn't spread in a flat plane.

It folded. Bent. Curved in directions that shouldn't exist.

Ice on the left wall connected to ice on the right—not by crossing the room, but by skipping the space between.

Frost appeared where frost shouldn't be, as if the room's geometry had quietly rearranged itself around him.

Luke saw none of it. His eyes were squeezed shut, teeth clenched hard enough to ache. His fingers dug into the frozen floor.

The restructuring continued.

Thirty seconds.

A minute.

Two.

The silver and violet threads wove deeper, tighter, binding themselves to the ice until there was no separation—no boundary between cold and time, no line between frost and space.

Just one thing.

One power made of three.

Then—

Silence.

The pain stopped like a hand releasing a throat.

The Will withdrew—slowly, gently—like a tide pulling back from shore.

And the voice returned one final time.

「Second awakening complete.」

「Current soul power… 92.」

Ninety-two.

Thirty points added by the second awakening—more than triple the first.

The number settled into Luke's awareness with a weight that felt physical.

Sixty-two had been the sum of two lives and one awakening.

Ninety-two was the sum of everything.

The voice continued.

「New ability unlocked.」

「Freeze (Time) — Upon activation, the user can freeze any moving object, person, or active ability within lock-on range. Targets are suspended in temporal stasis and will resume upon release. Cost: 10 soul power points per second of activation.」

Luke absorbed the information.

Ten points per second.

At ninety-two total, that was roughly nine seconds of total freeze time—if he spent everything at once.

And then he'd be empty. Drained.

Expensive.

But the implications were terrifying.

One second was enough to stop a bullet, stop a punch, stop a power mid-activation. One second could be the difference between life and death.

The voice delivered the last notification.

「Passive ability unlocked.」

「Frost Phantom Substitute (space) — Upon receiving a fatal strike, the user will instantly displace up to 500 meters to a marked location. A frozen phantom clone will remain at the original position, perfectly replicating the user's state at the moment of impact. The clone will persist and melt after 24 hours. Activation limit: 1 time per day.」

Then the voice fell silent.

The Will's presence faded like warmth leaving stone.

And Luke—

was alone again.
