Chapter 22 - Chapter Twenty-two: Heartbeats and Confessions

Alicia's studio had never felt so alive.

The sketches on the table glimmered under the soft lamp light, but her eyes kept drifting toward him Michael, standing just a few feet away, hands in his pockets, casually watching her work.

"I thought you'd be asleep," she said, trying to sound composed, but her voice trembled slightly.

"I couldn't sleep," he replied, stepping closer. "I needed to see you."

Alicia's heart skipped.

"Me?" she whispered.

"Yes. You," he said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

He leaned closer, and the heat of his body brushed against hers.

"I can't stop thinking about you," he murmured.

Alicia's breath caught. She felt a flutter deep in her chest.

"Michael…" she breathed, her fingers brushing against his as they both reached for the same pencil.

His hand lingered on hers.

"Don't pull away," he whispered.

She didn't.

Instead, she let herself be close, feeling the warmth, the steady pulse of him.

He leaned even closer, just a breath away from her lips.

"I… I think about kissing you," he confessed, voice low and husky.

Alicia's pulse raced.

"Then… why don't you?" she whispered, barely audible.

Michael smiled, that slow, mischievous smile that made her knees weak.

"Because I want it to be perfect," he said, cupping her face with both hands now.

And then

Their lips met.

Soft at first, exploring, hesitant.

Then deeper, warmer, more urgent.

Alicia felt the world fall away.

No competition. No danger. No enemy lurking in shadows.

Just… him.

When they finally pulled back, she rested her forehead against his.

"I've wanted that… for so long," she admitted, voice trembling with emotion.

Michael pressed his lips to her temple.

"And I've wanted this," he murmured. "Every single day."

They stayed like that, wrapped in each other, until Sophie and Adrian's quiet footsteps on the staircase reminded them that life still moved forward.

Sophie whispered to Adrian, peeking down from the landing.

"They're… finally together," she said, a soft smile spreading across her face.

Adrian grinned, stepping closer to her.

"And we're next," he teased gently.

Sophie's cheeks warmed, and she swatted his arm lightly.

"I… maybe," she admitted, her heart fluttering.

Back in the studio, Alicia rested against Michael, feeling the rhythm of his heartbeat.

"You know," she murmured, "I think I can do anything with you by my side."

Michael smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

"You already are," he said.

Outside the mansion, the enemy adjusted their position, binoculars trained on the window.

"They're closer than I thought," they muttered.

But inside, warmth and affection blossomed.

Alicia and Michael shared another slow, lingering kiss, hands intertwined.

Even the threat beyond the walls couldn't touch the bond forming between them.

Later, as Michael guided Alicia to a seat at the studio sofa, he draped a soft shawl around her shoulders.

"You're cold," he said softly.

"I'm fine," she murmured.

"You're not fine," he insisted, brushing her hair from her face.

Alicia leaned into him, letting him hold her.

"I like this," she whispered, "us like this."

Michael smiled against her hair.

"Me too," he murmured, voice deep and tender.

And for the first time, Alicia truly believed that with Michael, Sophie, Adrian, and her father Richard supporting her, she could face anything, even the shadow lurking outside.

Because love… was stronger than fear.
