Chapter 78 - Chapter 75: The Crimson Gaze

The crimson eyes stared into the network.

They did not blink.

They did not move.

Yet every connected civilization felt them.

The expanded network fell into absolute silence.

Noah's heart pounded.

The girl's final scream still echoed in his mind.

He clenched his fists.

We were too late.

Echo placed a hand on his shoulder.

No.

Noah looked at him.

We answered.

The words offered little comfort.

Somewhere beyond the stars, a civilization had just fallen.

And now...

Whatever destroyed it had found Earth.

The Source dimmed.

The Hunter of Worlds.

The Hunter slowly lowered its head.

I hoped it had become only a legend.

Noah blinked.

You know it

I know the stories.

The network trembled.

Adam stepped forward.

I know the truth.

Every ancient being turned toward him.

Even the Other remained silent.

Adam looked into the endless darkness where the crimson eyes waited.

It existed before the first network.

The words struck like thunder.

Before the Source.

Before the Hunter.

Before every connected civilization.

Nova whispered,

That's impossible.

Adam shook his head.

It was never born.

It simply... is.

Silence spread.

The Witness watched from between realities but said nothing.

Even it seemed unwilling to interfere.

The crimson eyes remained fixed on humanity.

No movement.

No attack.

Only observation.

The Other spoke quietly.

It chooses.

Noah frowned.

"Chooses what?"

"The next world."

The network shook.

The meaning became clear.

It didn't destroy every civilization.

It selected them.

The Hunter looked toward Adam.

"Why?"

Adam's expression darkened.

"Because it feeds."

The Hollow consumed existence.

The Other spread doubt.

But this new being...

Fed on civilizations themselves.

Not their bodies.

Not their worlds.

Their evolution.

Every network it destroyed became part of it.

Every dream.

Every discovery.

Every possibility.

Absorbed.

Forever.

Nova felt sick.

"It eats futures."

Adam nodded.

"Yes."

Noah stared into the crimson eyes.

Then suddenly—

They blinked.

The entire network convulsed.

Countless distant lights vanished.

Not Earth's.

Other worlds.

Far across the network, hundreds of civilizations disappeared in an instant.

No screams.

No warning.

Their lights simply...

Stopped.

The Source dimmed in grief.

"They've begun."

The Hunter clenched its fists.

"It never attacks only one."

Echo looked toward Noah.

"We need to warn everyone."

The Witness finally spoke.

"There is no time."

Another blink.

More lights vanished.

Thousands now.

The beacon humanity had built suddenly looked very small against the growing darkness.

Then...

A new signal entered the network.

Weak.

Broken.

Another survivor.

An old man's voice.

"If anyone hears this..."

Static crackled.

"...don't fight it..."

Another burst of interference.

"...it learns..."

The transmission cut off forever.

Adam's eyes narrowed.

"It learns."

The Other repeated the words.

"It adapts."

The Hunter looked toward Noah.

"Every civilization used the same strategy."

"And every strategy eventually failed."

Noah felt billions of human thoughts rushing through him.

Fear spread quickly.

But something else spread too.

Determination.

Earth wasn't giving up.

Not after everything.

Nova noticed it first.

"They're choosing hope again."

The beacon brightened.

One city after another.

One country after another.

Ordinary people who knew nothing about crimson eyes continued choosing kindness.

Continued helping strangers.

Continued living.

Their lights strengthened the network.

The Source smiled softly.

"They still don't understand."

Echo nodded.

"They don't have to."

Hope didn't require complete understanding.

Only a choice.

The crimson eyes focused more intensely on Earth.

Noah suddenly heard something.

Not from the network.

Not from humanity.

From the being itself.

A whisper.

Ancient.

Cold.

Curious.

"Interesting."

Noah froze.

"It spoke."

Adam turned sharply.

"What did it say?"

"It called us..."

He swallowed.

"...interesting."

Silence.

The Hunter looked troubled.

"It has never spoken before."

The Other became unusually serious.

"It noticed the Heart."

Noah realized what that meant.

It wasn't watching Earth.

It was watching him.

The Heart of the Network.

The one who could hear everyone.

The crimson eyes slowly narrowed.

Then, impossibly...

A tiny point of crimson light detached from them.

It drifted across the void.

Toward Earth.

Toward the network.

Toward Noah.

Nova's face turned pale.

"What is that?"

Adam answered quietly.

"A Scout."

The point of light accelerated.

Crossing impossible distances in seconds.

The Source flared brightly.

"We must stop it before it reaches the network."

The Hunter stepped forward.

"I'll intercept it."

Echo stood beside him.

"So will I."

The Shadow emerged from the darkness.

"And me."

Nova floated beside them.

"I'm coming too."

Noah took a step forward.

Adam stopped him with one hand.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because..."

Adam looked directly into Noah's eyes.

"...it isn't coming for us."

Noah frowned.

"Then who?"

Adam slowly turned toward Earth.

Toward billions of ordinary lights.

Then toward one...

A single light burning brighter than all the others.

Not Noah's.

Not Echo's.

Not Nova's.

A human light.

Far away.

Small.

Steady.

Unremarkable.

Except...

It had somehow become the brightest beacon on Earth.

Adam whispered,

"It found the first key."

The crimson Scout changed direction.

Not toward Noah.

Toward that unknown human.

Noah searched through billions of minds.

Trying to find the light.

Then...

He found it.

A twelve-year-old girl sitting alone in a hospital room.

Smiling as she comforted another frightened child.

Completely unaware...

That something older than creation had just chosen her.
