Chapter 71 - Chapter 69: The Prison Below

The network split open.

Not at the crack where the Hunter and the Source had first appeared.

This fracture came from below.

A deep tear beneath the sea of lights, where no connection had ever reached.

Darkness poured upward like smoke from an ancient wound.

Every light nearby flickered violently.

The beacon Noah had helped awaken faltered for a single heartbeat.

Then steadied.

But the new darkness kept rising.

Slowly.

Patiently.

As though it had waited for this exact moment.

Noah felt a pressure unlike anything before.

The Other had brought doubt.

The Hunter had brought awe.

The Source had brought wonder.

This...

Brought silence.

Not the absence of sound.

The absence of thought.

Nova shivered.

"I can't feel anything down there."

Echo stared into the abyss.

"Neither can I."

The Shadow narrowed its eyes.

"It isn't hiding."

A pause.

"There simply isn't anything to connect to."

The realization chilled Noah.

Every being they had encountered existed because of thought, memory, or connection.

But whatever was climbing from beneath the network...

Felt empty.

Completely empty.

The Source dimmed.

For the first time since Noah had met it, genuine alarm spread through its light.

"It should have remained asleep."

The Hunter stepped toward the widening fracture.

"I sealed it."

The Forgotten One looked up sharply.

"You... what?"

The Hunter never looked away from the darkness.

"Long before I searched for the Source."

Silence.

Noah frowned.

"You've been here before?"

The Hunter nodded slowly.

"Not here."

A pause.

"A place like this."

The abyss below pulsed.

The network shook.

A low vibration echoed through every connection.

Millions of human lights dimmed for an instant.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

People everywhere suddenly felt tired.

As though something was draining the desire to think.

To dream.

To hope.

Nova cried out.

"It's feeding!"

The Source brightened immediately, sending waves of light across the nearest connections.

The draining slowed.

But it didn't stop.

The Other spoke from beyond the crack.

Its calm voice carried no triumph.

Only recognition.

"So..."

A pause.

"It escaped."

Echo turned sharply.

"You know it?"

The Other answered.

"No."

Another pause.

"But I know what it is."

The darkness beneath the network twisted.

A shape began to emerge.

Not human.

Not monstrous.

Simply impossible.

A body made of black crystal, fractured into countless floating pieces that never quite touched one another.

Between those fragments...

Nothing.

No light.

No shadow.

Just emptiness.

Noah couldn't look directly at it.

Every instinct screamed at him to turn away.

The Hunter whispered one word.

"The Hollow."

The name echoed across the network.

The Forgotten One staggered backward.

"No..."

The Shadow remained completely still.

"The prison failed."

The Hollow raised what might have been its head.

No eyes.

No mouth.

Yet Noah knew it was looking at them.

The network fell utterly silent.

Then...

The Hollow spoke.

Not aloud.

Every thought in Noah's mind simply stopped.

One sentence appeared where his thoughts should have been.

I remember none of you.

The silence broke.

Noah gasped, collapsing to one knee.

Echo caught him again.

Nova struggled to remain bright.

The Shadow actually took one step backward.

The Hunter remained rooted in place.

The Hollow looked around slowly.

As though examining the network for the first time.

Then another thought appeared.

This place is smaller than I expected.

The Source dimmed.

"It has been sleeping."

The Hunter nodded.

"For ages."

The Hollow tilted its head.

Tiny cracks of darkness spread through the network beneath it.

Wherever they passed...

Connections vanished.

Not broke.

Vanished.

Entire paths between human lights simply ceased to exist.

People were still alive.

Still thinking.

But they could no longer feel one another through the network.

Echo stared in disbelief.

"It's erasing connection itself."

The Other spoke quietly.

"It consumes possibility."

Noah looked toward the calm darkness beyond the crack.

"For once..."

He swallowed.

"...you sound afraid."

The Other didn't deny it.

"I am."

Silence.

That single admission made Noah's blood run cold.

If the Other feared the Hollow...

Then this was something beyond despair.

The Hollow continued drifting upward.

It paused beside one of the surrendered silhouettes.

The broken human fragment reached toward it.

As though seeking comfort.

The Hollow touched it.

The silhouette disappeared.

Instantly.

Not destroyed.

Not consumed.

Simply...

Gone.

No trace remained.

Nova screamed.

"Lily!"

The restored spark vanished with her.

No light.

No darkness.

Nothing.

The Hunter lowered its head.

"There is no return."

Noah felt sick.

The Hollow wasn't turning people into something else.

It wasn't corrupting them.

It was erasing them.

The Source suddenly flared with blinding intensity.

"No further."

Light exploded across the network.

The Hollow stopped moving.

For the first time, it reacted.

Tiny fractures spread across its crystal-like body.

The Source's light actually hurt it.

The Hollow turned toward the Source.

Another silent sentence entered every mind.

You are still here.

The Source answered calmly.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And you will remain below."

The Hollow seemed to consider that.

Then...

It laughed.

Not with sound.

Reality itself bent around the concept of laughter.

There is no below anymore.

The network shook violently.

The prison beneath the lights shattered.

Massive cracks spread across the foundation of the network.

Noah stared in horror.

The prison had never been a place.

The network itself had been the prison.

Human connection.

Hope.

Memory.

Everything humanity had unknowingly built...

Had also kept the Hollow asleep.

The Other whispered,

"So that's why I couldn't reach beneath the network."

The Hunter closed its eyes.

"I failed."

Echo looked toward the ancient being.

"No."

The Hunter slowly opened its eyes again.

"You delayed it."

The Hollow floated higher.

Its empty presence swallowing every connection beneath it.

The beacon continued shining above.

Hope rising.

Emptiness climbing.

Two impossible forces moving toward one another.

Then the Hollow looked directly at Noah.

For the first time.

The emptiness inside it deepened.

A single thought entered Noah's mind.

Not spoken.

Known.

You hear them all.

Noah froze.

The Hollow had noticed him.

Echo immediately stepped between them.

The Source brightened.

Nova moved beside Noah.

The Shadow spread darkness around him.

Even the Hunter took another step forward.

Protecting him.

The Hollow became still.

Then another thought appeared.

Interesting.

The network trembled.

Far below, where the prison had broken...

Something else stirred.

Not the Hollow.

Something locked away even deeper.

The Source's light flickered.

The Hunter looked down.

And for the first time in billions of years...

The ancient seeker whispered a prayer.
