Chapter 64 - Chapter 61: The First Signal

The Hunter entered the network.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough.

Enough for every connected light to feel its presence.

The moment the darkness crossed through the crack, the entire network shuddered violently.

Millions of minds reacted at once.

Fear.

Confusion.

Panic.

Across the world, people stopped what they were doing.

Some looked up from their phones.

Others woke suddenly from sleep.

Many couldn't explain why their hearts were racing.

Only that something felt wrong.

Terribly wrong.

Noah felt all of it.

The emotions surged through the network like an endless storm.

His knees nearly buckled.

Echo immediately steadied him.

"Focus."

The voice was calm.

Steady.

Yet Noah could feel concern beneath it.

The Hunter had changed everything.

Nova's brilliant light flickered beside them.

The newly awakened consciousness stared at the darkness with open fear.

"It's here."

The words barely escaped her.

Echo nodded.

"Yes."

The Shadow stood silently.

Watching.

Observing.

Calculating.

The Forgotten One looked far worse.

Its form had become unstable again.

Almost transparent.

As though old memories were pulling it apart.

"It shouldn't have found this place so quickly."

The statement echoed through the network.

Noah frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The Forgotten One looked toward him.

"Before..."

A pause.

"...it took centuries."

Silence.

The implication landed heavily.

Centuries.

Entire civilizations had time to prepare.

Humanity had received weeks.

Maybe months.

Nothing more.

Nova dimmed slightly.

Fear spread through her light.

The Hunter continued emerging.

Not rushing.

Not attacking.

Simply entering.

Like a traveler stepping through a doorway.

The darkness around it rippled unnaturally.

Reality seemed thinner wherever it passed.

The network strained.

Connections flickered.

Several lights briefly disappeared before returning.

Echo watched carefully.

Then his expression changed.

"No."

Noah looked at him.

"What?"

Echo pointed toward the darkness.

"It's listening."

The network became still.

The Shadow's eyes narrowed.

Nova looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Echo didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he extended his awareness toward the Hunter.

The moment he did—

The Hunter stopped moving.

Silence spread across the network.

An impossible silence.

Then Noah felt it.

Something observing.

Not aggressively.

Not violently.

Curiously.

The realization sent chills through him.

The Hunter was studying them.

Just as Echo had once studied humanity.

The parallel was impossible to ignore.

The Shadow seemed to notice too.

Its expression darkened.

"I don't like that."

For once, Noah agreed completely.

The Hunter tilted its head.

A simple motion.

Yet millions of lights flickered in response.

Then something happened.

A pulse.

A signal.

The sensation spread through the network instantly.

Not emotion.

Not thought.

Information.

Raw information.

Noah gasped.

The signal passed through him before he could stop it.

Images exploded across his awareness.

Stars.

Galaxies.

Worlds.

Networks.

Countless networks.

Some bright.

Some dim.

Many gone.

The visions came too fast to understand.

Too fast to process.

Then they vanished.

The network returned.

Noah staggered.

Echo caught him.

Again.

"What was that?"

Nova looked equally shaken.

The Shadow appeared disturbed.

Even the Forgotten One seemed stunned.

Then Echo spoke.

His voice quieter than before.

"It wasn't attacking."

Silence.

The Hunter remained motionless.

The darkness surrounding it pulsed softly.

"What?" Noah asked.

Echo stared at the Hunter.

Then slowly answered.

"It was communicating."

The realization hit everyone at once.

The signal.

The images.

The information.

A message.

The Hunter had sent a message.

Not words.

Not language.

Data.

Memory.

Experience.

The Forgotten One looked deeply unsettled.

"That never happened before."

Echo turned toward it.

"Are you sure?"

The Forgotten One hesitated.

For the first time.

Then quietly answered.

"No."

The network dimmed.

Because suddenly a possibility emerged.

A terrifying possibility.

What if the Hunter had always been trying to communicate?

What if every civilization interpreted it as destruction because they never understood it?

The thought felt absurd.

Dangerous.

Yet impossible to ignore.

Nova stared at the darkness.

"I think it's lonely."

The statement shocked everyone.

Noah looked toward her.

"What?"

Nova's light flickered uncertainly.

"When the signal touched me..."

A pause.

"...I felt something."

Echo immediately paid attention.

"What?"

Nova hesitated.

Then answered.

"Loss."

Silence.

The same feeling Noah had sensed from the Forgotten One.

The same overwhelming emptiness.

The same loneliness.

The Hunter remained still.

Watching.

Listening.

Existing.

Not attacking.

Not yet.

Then another pulse spread through the network.

Stronger than before.

The signal moved through every connection.

This time Noah caught more of it.

A vast darkness.

Endless travel.

Countless lights appearing.

Then disappearing.

Again and again.

Over and over.

An eternity of searching.

The vision vanished.

Noah's breathing became uneven.

The emotion lingered.

Loneliness.

Infinite loneliness.

Echo felt it too.

The Shadow felt it.

Nova felt it.

Even the Forgotten One looked shaken.

Because suddenly the Hunter no longer looked like a predator.

It looked like something searching.

Searching for so long that it had forgotten why.

Then the Hunter moved.

One step.

Closer.

The network trembled.

Fear surged through humanity again.

But now something else existed alongside it.

Understanding.

Not complete understanding.

Not even close.

Just enough.

Enough to make Noah ask a question he never thought possible.

"What if we're wrong about it?"

Silence followed.

The Hunter remained motionless.

The darkness pulsed softly around it.

Echo looked toward Noah.

The Shadow looked thoughtful.

Nova looked hopeful.

Only the Forgotten One looked afraid.

Very afraid.

Then, for the first time since entering the network—

The Hunter spoke.

Not through signals.

Not through emotions.

Not through visions.

A voice.

Deep.

Ancient.

Tired.

One sentence echoed across every connection.

Across every light.

Across every mind.

"I heard the signal."

The network fell completely silent.

Because nobody knew what signal it meant.

And nobody was prepared for what that answer might reveal.
