Chapter 89: FOREVER
Dominic asks me to come to the ridge house on a Sunday, three weeks after the vote, after Hartwell's formal indictment, after Camille's quiet disappearance from public life into whatever consequence is currently being arranged for her by federal investigators who have shown no interest in letting any of this go unanswered. Three weeks of something that almost resembles peace, fragile and unfamiliar, the kind of stillness I have learned not to trust completely because every other stillness this family has known has eventually shattered into something worse.
"Just for the afternoon," he says, when he calls. "No agenda. No board business. I just want you to come."
I should have known better than to believe that completely.
