The hospital room is too quiet and I have not left the chair beside Liam's bed in hours.
The bullet, when the doctors finally explained what actually happened, was not from the car itself. The car was the distraction, the chaos meant to drive us into a panicked sprint toward exactly the wrong angle, and the actual wound came from a single shot fired from a rooftop two buildings down, close enough to the shoulder that another inch in any direction would have ended very differently. Liam has not fully woken since the surgery. He drifts in and out, his eyes finding mine each time with the same steady relief, then sliding closed again before either of us can manage more than a few words.
