Chapter 82: BROTHER'S GAMBIT
The intruder Liam caught on the internal feed turns out to be a hired courier, paid in cash by an untraceable account, sent to plant a listening device in the back office rather than to harm anyone directly. We find the device within twenty minutes of Dominic arriving, hidden inside the base of a desk lamp, and Liam disables it with the particular grim satisfaction of a man who has just confirmed that someone has been listening to every conversation in this house for at least the last several days.
It is not nothing. Whoever sent that courier now has weeks of conversations, names, theories, every careful piece of the investigation we thought was contained inside these walls. It is also not the worst thing that could have happened, and for an hour I let myself believe the worst of the morning is behind us, that we can simply sweep the house for any other devices, tighten the security, and move forward with whatever damage has already been done.
