Chapter 11 - The Night That Changed Nothing

Evi walked toward him—

and sat down across the table.

Rex was still staring.

Frozen.

Evi waved her hand in front of his face.

Evi: "Rex…?"

No response.

She leaned slightly forward.

Evi: "Rex?"

A moment passed—

then he blinked.

Like he had just come back.

Rex: "It's nothing… don't worry about it."

Evi tilted her head slightly.

Evi: "What happened to you? Why were you staring at the door like that?"

Rex looked away for a second.

Rex: "Really, it's nothing."

A small pause.

Evi smiled faintly.

Evi: "By the way… you look good in this shirt. I've never seen you like this before."

Rex's expression softened slightly.

Rex: "Thanks… I wasn't sure about it."

But in his mind—

So you really liked it…

Then I'll wear this every time I meet you.

A quiet pause settled between them.

Rex: "You also look good in this dress. I've never seen you wear something like this."

Evi raised a brow slightly.

Evi: "Only good? Not beautiful?"

Rex froze.

Under his breath—almost inaudible—

Rex (murmured): "You look so beautiful… I can't even take my eyes off you."

A beat.

Rex (quickly): "Good is enough, isn't it?"

Evi looked at him for a second.

Evi: "Hmm… I'll take that."

She leaned back slightly.

Evi: "I don't usually wear outfits like this."

After a few minutes of small talk—

Evi glanced at the menu.

Evi: "We can order now."

Rex nodded lightly.

She called the waiter and placed the order.

While waiting—

Evi took out her phone.

And started texting.

Rex noticed.

But didn't interrupt.

He hesitated.

Then spoke—

Rex: "From tomorrow… school starts again."

A small pause.

"…I guess we won't get to talk like this anymore."

Evi didn't respond.

Still focused on her phone.

After a moment—

Evi: "Sorry—what did you say?"

Rex paused briefly.

Rex: "It's nothing important. I was just talking to myself."

Silence settled again.

A few minutes later—

their food arrived.

Evi reached for her food—

but stopped.

Rex had his eyes closed.

Hands together.

Quietly praying.

Evi watched him for a second—

then slowly did the same.

Both at the same time—

Evi & Rex: "Thanks for the food."

Rex opened his eyes, confused.

Rex: "I've never seen you pray before eating… why are you doing it now?"

Evi gave a small shrug.

Evi: "I didn't want you to feel left out."

Rex paused slightly.

Rex: "I see…"

They started eating.

After a few bites—

Evi suddenly spoke.

Evi: "What did you mean by 'you've never seen me pray before'?"

A pause.

"We've never eaten together before."

Rex froze.

For a moment—

he couldn't respond.

Rex: "Don't you remember… when we went to play badminton?"

"…we ate at that stall."

Evi thought for a second.

Evi: "I guess I don't remember."

A pause.

"…and I don't remember you praying there either."

Rex looked away.

Rex: "You might have missed it… but I did."

Evi shrugged lightly.

Evi: "Alright, I'll take your word for it."

Rex exhaled quietly.

That was close.

Evi smiled faintly.

Evi: "For a second, I thought you were a stalker."

Rex stiffened.

Rex: "What—?"

Evi laughed softly.

Evi: "Relax. I'm joking."

After finishing their food—

they paid the bill and stepped outside.

The night air felt colder now.

Evi: "Do you want ice cream?"

Rex looked at her.

Rex: "At this time?"

"…you're serious?"

Evi grinned.

Evi: "Completely."

Rex shook his head slightly.

Rex: "You really do love ice cream."

Evi: "I can eat it even in freezing weather."

Rex: "That's actually impressive."

A pause.

"…don't you get sick?"

Evi laughed lightly.

Evi: "Not really."

After buying ice cream—

Evi started eating happily.

Rex didn't buy one.

Evi glanced at him.

Evi: "You didn't get one?"

Rex: "I'm not that immune to cold nights like you."

Evi nodded slightly.

Evi: "Fair enough."

They started walking toward the bus stop.

After a few moments—

Evi spoke again.

Evi: "You might be wondering why I called you a stalker."

Rex glanced at her.

Rex: "Not really… but go on."

Evi paused.

Thinking.

Then she shook her head lightly.

Evi: "Never mind. It's nothing."

Rex didn't push further.

The bus arrived.

They got in.

And later—

got off at their stop.

Evi: "Bye."

Rex: "Take care."

Evi turned and started walking toward her house.

Rex watched her for a second.

Something felt off.

Rex: "Wait."

She turned slightly.

Rex: "I'll walk you home."

Evi rolled her eyes faintly.

Evi: "You don't have to."

Rex didn't move.

A small pause.

Evi sighed.

Evi: "Fine."

They walked together.

Talking lightly.

When they reached her house—

Evi stopped.

Evi: "Do you want to come inside?"

Rex shook his head.

Rex: "I should head back."

"…it's getting late."

Evi nodded.

Evi: "Alright. Good night."

She went inside.

From the window above—

Herry stood there.

Watching.

Silent.

Rex turned and started walking away.

Calm.

Normal.

But the moment he was sure she was inside—

he ran.

Fast.

Without stopping.

Without looking back.
