Chapter 30 - The line between Human and Monsters

The room no longer felt like a place meant for humans.

It felt like a stage.

A stage where something unnatural had been waiting… and was finally being revealed.

Han Seo-yeon stood at the center of it all.

The flashing red lights painted her in shifting shadows, the alarms still echoing faintly through the halls, yet none of it seemed to reach her the same way anymore. The chaos, the danger, the fear that should have overwhelmed her—it all felt distant, like she was observing it instead of being inside it.

Her breathing was steady.

Too steady.

Her heart, once racing uncontrollably, now beat in a calm, measured rhythm.

And that alone—

Scared her.

She slowly lifted her hand, staring at her fingers as if they no longer belonged to her.

"…This isn't normal," she whispered.

But the words didn't carry panic.

They carried realization.

Kang Ji-hoon stood just a few steps away, his entire attention fixed on her.

Not the enemies.

Not the room.

Her.

Every small movement she made, every shift in her expression, every subtle change in her posture—he noticed all of it.

And he didn't like what he was seeing.

"…Seo-yeon," he called, his voice low but firm.

She turned toward him.

And for a brief second—

He saw her.

The same girl who had argued with him, trusted him, stood beside him even when she was afraid.

But layered beneath that—

Was something else.

Something sharper.

Something… unfamiliar.

"…Are you okay?" he asked.

It was a simple question.

But for him—

It meant everything.

Seo-yeon blinked slowly, as if processing not just his words, but the tone behind them.

"…I don't know," she answered honestly.

Her gaze dropped again.

"…Everything feels different," she continued. "It's like… my mind won't slow down."

Ji-hoon stepped closer, cautious but firm.

"…Different how?"

She hesitated.

Then—

"…I can see patterns," she said quietly. "Movements… reactions… even before they happen."

Ji-hoon frowned slightly, his instincts already warning him.

Before he could respond—

A soft chuckle echoed from across the room.

"…Not exactly."

The man they had been interrogating earlier leaned casually against the wall, despite the situation.

"…She's not seeing the future," he continued. "She's calculating it."

Ji-hoon's gaze snapped toward him instantly.

"I didn't ask you."

The man shrugged slightly. "You should. You're clearly confused."

That was enough.

Ji-hoon crossed the distance in a single step, grabbing the man by the collar and slamming him hard against the wall again. The impact echoed sharply through the room.

"I told you," Ji-hoon said, his voice dangerously low, "stop talking."

The man winced slightly—but smiled anyway.

"…You still don't get it," he said.

Ji-hoon's grip tightened.

"…Get what?"

"…She's not the one who needs protecting anymore."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Ji-hoon's jaw clenched.

"Ji-hoon."

Seo-yeon's voice stopped him again.

He froze.

Slowly—

He released the man.

And turned back to her.

She had moved closer.

Closer than before.

"…He's not completely wrong," she said quietly.

Ji-hoon's expression hardened instantly.

"…Don't say that."

"I can feel it," she continued, her voice calm but heavy. "Something inside me… it's changing."

"That doesn't change who you are," he replied immediately.

She looked at him.

And for the first time—

There was hesitation.

"…But what if it does?" she asked softly.

The question hung between them.

Neither of them ready for the answer.

Before either of them could speak again—

A slow, deliberate clap echoed through the room.

Once.

Twice.

Then silence.

Both of them turned.

A man stood at the entrance.

Older.

Composed.

Untouched by the chaos.

His presence alone shifted the atmosphere, as if the entire facility recognized him.

"…Impressive," he said smoothly.

Seo-yeon felt it instantly.

That pressure.

That presence.

Different from the others.

"…Who is that?" she whispered.

The man behind them exhaled slowly.

"…The one you don't want to meet," he muttered.

Ji-hoon stepped slightly forward.

"…You're the one behind all this."

The newcomer smiled faintly.

"Behind it?" he repeated. "No."

He took a step forward.

"I created it."

Silence fell instantly.

Seo-yeon's chest tightened.

"…Created… what?" she asked.

His eyes shifted to her.

And for the first time—

There was something unsettling in his gaze.

Pride.

"…You," he said.

Her breath caught.

"…Stay away from me," she said, taking a small step back.

He chuckled lightly.

"That won't be possible."

Ji-hoon moved instantly, stepping in front of her.

"You don't get near her."

The man tilted his head slightly, studying him.

"…You still believe you have control here."

Ji-hoon didn't hesitate.

"I don't believe," he said.

"I act."

The man smiled.

"…Then act."

The lights flickered violently.

The ground trembled.

And then—

The doors behind him opened.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Figures stepped out.

At first glance—they looked human.

But something was wrong.

Their movements were too rigid.

Too controlled.

Their eyes—

Empty.

Seo-yeon's breath caught.

"…Those are…?"

"Failures," the man replied calmly. "Prototypes that didn't make it."

Ji-hoon's expression darkened instantly.

"…You kept them alive?"

"Of course," the man said. "Even failure has purpose."

The figures began to move.

Slow at first.

Then—

Faster.

Much faster.

Ji-hoon stepped forward, ready to intercept—

But suddenly—

A hand grabbed his arm.

He froze.

Seo-yeon.

"…Wait," she said.

"This isn't the time—"

"I know," she replied.

Her grip tightened slightly.

"…But I can do this."

"No," Ji-hoon said immediately.

"Ji-hoon—"

"No," he repeated, firmer this time. "You're not facing them alone."

She looked at him.

And for a moment—

Everything else faded.

"…Then don't leave me," she said quietly.

He didn't hesitate.

"…Never."

The first prototype attacked.

Fast.

Stronger than any normal human.

Ji-hoon moved—

But Seo-yeon was faster.

She stepped forward—

Dodged—

Countered—

Her movement smooth, precise, almost effortless.

Her hand struck—

And the force sent the prototype flying backward into the wall.

The impact echoed.

The room went still.

Even Ji-hoon paused.

"…You see?" the older man said softly. "She's already beyond human."

Seo-yeon's chest tightened.

But she didn't stop.

Another one came.

Then two.

Then more.

This time—

She moved without hesitation.

Her body reacted faster than her thoughts.

Every attack avoided.

Every strike calculated.

Every movement efficient.

Ji-hoon joined her, taking down another prototype with brutal precision.

They moved side by side.

Perfectly in sync.

But even then—

He felt it.

She was faster.

Stronger.

Different.

And that thought—

It unsettled him more than anything else.

Across the room, the older man watched with quiet satisfaction.

"…Perfect," he murmured.

The man beside him frowned slightly.

"…You're pushing her too far."

"I'm revealing her," he corrected calmly.

His eyes narrowed.

"…And soon… she'll have to choose."

Back in the fight—

Seo-yeon slowed for just a second.

Her breathing steady.

Her body ready.

But her mind—

Racing.

Her gaze dropped briefly to her hands.

Then lifted again.

"…Ji-hoon," she said.

He turned instantly.

"…If I lose control…"

His expression hardened.

"…You won't."

"But if I do—"

"I won't let you," he said.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

She held his gaze.

And nodded.

But deep down—

She wasn't sure anyone could stop what was coming.
