Chapter 56 - Chapter 56. The Truth Beneath the Leaves

Chapter 56

The Truth Beneath the Leaves

Deep in the heart of the ancient forest, the great hall of the elves felt alive with quiet magic. Tall trees with leaves that shimmered like green stars formed the walls and roof, their branches gently swaying as if whispering secrets to one another. Soft moss covered the floor like a thick, friendly carpet, and tiny flowers glowed with their own soft light along the edges. The air smelled sweet, like fresh rain on wild herbs and warm honey from hidden beehives.

Luna walked forward slowly, her small steps light and careful. Around her, the spirits danced like playful friends who had come to keep her safe. A gentle wind spirit twirled in happy circles, carrying sparkles of silver light. A bright fire spirit bounced like a cheerful flame, painting the air with warm orange and gold. A clear water spirit flowed in graceful ribbons, leaving tiny drops that sparkled like morning dew.

Together they filled the whole hall with soft, dancing colors that pushed away the heavy tension from moments before. The lights wrapped around Luna like a warm blanket, giving her courage.

The elves stood in stunned silence. Their pointed ears twitched with surprise, and their wise eyes grew wide. Some of them lowered their bows without even thinking, the strings relaxing as if the weapons themselves knew there was no need for arrows now. Others simply stared, mouths open in quiet wonder.

A spirit child was something they had only heard about in the oldest elven stories—tales told by grandmothers around crackling campfires under the stars. It was said to be a special blessing from the forest itself, a sign that the trees and winds still loved their people.

Luna took another small step, her heart beating fast but steady. She gathered her courage like picking up scattered flowers after a storm. The spirits swirled closer, forming a protective circle that made her feel less alone.

She opened her mouth to speak, her voice ready to explain everything in her gentle way—

But before she could say a single word—

A calm voice came from behind them, steady and strong like the first light of dawn.

"Step aside, everyone."

All heads turned at once.

Standing at the wide entrance of the hall was Alex. Dust from the earlier fight clung lightly to his cloak, but it only made him look like a hero who had just walked through a storm and come out smiling. Golden light still shimmered faintly around his body, soft and warm like the afterglow of a beautiful sunrise that refused to fade.

His eyes were calm, yet there was a sharp focus in them now, the kind that saw both the small hurts and the big dangers hiding ahead.

Behind him, just outside the broken wall of the hall, the Second Elder lay on the soft mossy ground, struggling to rise. The old elf's face looked tired and confused, as if something inside him was fighting to stay hidden.

Alex slowly raised one hand. Golden mana gathered around his palm, bright and pure, like a piece of the sun itself deciding to help.

"Holy Purification," he said softly, his voice carrying through the hall like a kind promise.

The spell shot forward like a gentle beam of sunlight cutting through morning mist. It wrapped around the Second Elder in a warm, glowing hug.

For a moment, nothing seemed to change.

The light simply held him, soft and steady.

Then—

The elder's body suddenly twisted violently. Dark lines spread across his skin like cracks in black glass left too long in the cold. A sinister aura began leaking from him like thick smoke rising from a poisoned fire.

The surrounding trees trembled, their leaves rustling in fear. The air grew cold and heavy, carrying a sour smell that made everyone wrinkle their noses.

The elves gasped in horror, stepping back as one.

The elder's once calm and kind face twisted into something monstrous. His veins darkened, pulsing like angry rivers of shadow. The corruption hidden deep inside him was forced into the open, writhing and fighting against the holy light.

Alex lowered his hand calmly, the golden glow fading from his fingers like the last spark of a friendly campfire. The truth had been revealed, clear as a stream after rain.

The elven chief slowly stepped forward. His wise face turned pale with disbelief, and his shoulders sagged with sudden sadness. His voice came out quiet and heavy, full of the pain of a father who had just learned one of his own had broken the family's trust.

"…What is the meaning of this?"

He looked at the twisted figure of the elder lying on the ground, eyes full of hurt.

"…Are you saying… there was a cursed one among our elders all this time?"

The chief's eyes hardened with a mix of deep pain and quiet anger.

"Why? Why would you do this to your own people? We have lived together under these trees for so many peaceful years."

The corrupted elder slowly raised his head. His eyes now glowed with dark purple light, cold and empty like forgotten caves. His voice came out twisted and bitter, each word falling into the hall like poisoned thorns that hurt to hear.

"Because of you."

The words stung the air.

"You were never meant to be chief. I was."

His breathing grew heavier, dark energy leaking from his body like shadowy mist that made the flowers nearby wilt.

"I was the strongest elder… the most respected… But those foolish elders chose you instead. They took the position that should have been mine!"

His twisted eyes glared at the chief, full of old jealousy that had grown like a weed in the dark.

"I was desperate. I had no choice. So I accepted the offer. To become a member of the Eclipse."

Dark energy pulsed from his body again, stronger this time. Several elves stepped back in shock, their faces pale with sadness and fear. Whispers spread like worried breezes—

"How could this happen?"

"Our own elder…"

Alex sighed softly, his voice gentle but firm.

"Well," he said calmly, "that explains everything. The shadows were hiding right here, pretending to be friends."

He stepped forward, boots soft on the moss.

"That's enough chatting. Let's finish this and bring back the peace your forest deserves."

The corrupted elder roared, a terrible sound that shook the leaves. Dark energy exploded from his body, twisting the air like a violent storm that wanted to tear everything apart. His form changed right before their eyes—black cracks spread across his skin, his aura grew heavier and darker, and the forest itself seemed to recoil, branches pulling back as if in pain.

But before he could launch his first attack—

The elven chief stepped forward with quiet strength. His sword flashed like silver lightning under the moonlight, sharp and true.

"You will not stain our forest any longer," he said, voice steady with the love of a leader who would protect his home.

At the same time—

Luna raised her small hands, eyes bright with courage. The spirits responded instantly, happy to help their new friend. The wind spirit surged forward like a rushing gale that carried the laughter of leaves. The fire spirit shot through the air like a bright comet, warm and brave. The water spirit formed a swirling ribbon of crystal around Alex, cool and protective like a gentle stream guarding a traveler.

Alex smiled faintly, the golden light around him growing warmer.

"Good timing, everyone. Let's do this together."

Golden light exploded around him like the heart of a sunrise.

"Apostle Skill. Holy Radiance."

The whole clearing flooded with blinding golden light that felt like a warm, loving hug from the Goddess herself. It chased away every shadow and filled the air with the sweet scent of fresh hope.

The corrupted elder screamed as the holy power burned against the dark corruption inside him. Still he fought back, swinging dark claws of shadow that lashed through the air like angry whips. Trees cracked with loud snaps. The ground split open in small lines.

But now he was fighting three forces at once—the pure holy power of Alex, the swift elven blade of the chief, and the playful yet powerful spirits guided by Luna.

The battle shook the forest in a dance of light and shadow.

BOOM!

Golden light crashed against dark claws.

CRASH!

The chief's sword sliced through a wave of shadow.

The wind spirit howled and pushed the darkness back. The fire spirit burned away tendrils of evil. The water spirit wrapped and cooled the hottest bursts of corruption.

Alex moved with calm grace, his hands glowing as he sent beams of light that healed the trees even as they fought. Luna's eyes shone with pride as her spirits worked together like a happy team.

The chief fought with tears in his eyes but strength in his heart, protecting the home he loved.

Finally—

Alex raised his hand one last time.

Golden energy gathered into a brilliant spear of light, shining like a star that had decided to help.

"Divine Judgment."

The spear of holy light shot forward, straight and true. It pierced through the elder's chest with a soft, bright flash.

The corrupted elf froze.

Dark energy shattered like broken glass, falling away in harmless sparkles. The purple glow faded from his eyes, leaving only sadness and regret.

Then—

His body collapsed gently onto the moss, the corruption vanishing completely like bad dreams at sunrise.

Silence returned to the forest at last.

Only the wind moved through the trees again, soft and peaceful, carrying the scent of healing leaves and fresh earth.

The elven chief slowly walked toward Alex.

His sword lowered, and the tension melted from his face like snow under spring sun.

He bowed his head slightly, a sign of deep respect from one leader to another.

"If not for you… our village might have been destroyed from within," he said, voice thick with thanks.

"You have my deepest gratitude. And the gratitude of our people. The forest will remember this kindness forever."

He placed his hand over his chest respectfully, the way elves honored true friends.

Alex shook his head calmly, his golden eyes kind.

"No. I only did what was right. The light inside all of us helped today."

His gaze turned toward the deeper forest, past the glowing hall and toward the ancient mountains beyond the trees.

The wind shifted suddenly, carrying a faint, distant rumble that only he seemed to notice. Something ancient was stirring—something tied to the great World Tree that watched over everything.

Alex's eyes narrowed just a little, but his voice stayed warm.

"No. Things are not over yet."

Far away in the forest, another deep rumble echoed, soft but full of mystery.

"The real problem… has only just begun."

The spirits around Luna quieted, as if listening too. The elves looked at one another with new hope mixed with quiet wonder.

Whatever came next, they would face it together—with light, friendship, and the gentle magic of the trees.
