Chapter 45

Shadows Beneath Valencrest

The castle of Valencrest stood tall and proud beneath the deep night sky, its white stone walls glowing with a soft and welcoming light. Tall windows spilled warm golden rays across the grounds, while floating lanterns drifted gently above the gardens like friendly stars that had come down to watch over the family. Everything looked peaceful and safe, the way a true home should feel after a long day.

But Alex and Max arrived like a sudden summer storm, their boots pounding across the polished stone courtyard.

The guards at the gates straightened immediately in surprise, their emerald armor catching the warm lantern glow.

"Your Highness?" one called out, his voice filled with concern.

Alex did not slow down. His heart beat strong and steady in his chest, the warm dragon blood within him stirring like a protective flame.

"Where is the Duke?" he asked, his breath quick but his voice clear.

The soldiers saw the urgency in his eyes and answered at once.

"In the main hall, Your Highness. He's with the family."

Alex nodded sharply and rushed through the wide doors without another word. Max stayed close beside him, silent and ready, his hand resting lightly near the hilt of his sword.

The castle halls felt warmer than ever tonight. Soft rugs covered the floor beneath their boots, and glowing crystals set into the walls hummed with a gentle tune of safety and comfort. But none of that warmth reached Alex now.

Shadows were hiding beneath the city.

And he had to warn everyone before it was too late.

---

The Duke's Hall

Only moments earlier, the great hall had been filled with life.

A long wooden table stood proudly in the center, set with shining silver plates and bowls of fresh fruit that sparkled faintly with preserving magic. Duke Armand sat at the head of the table, laughing softly as he shared old stories of the province with his son Cedric.

Servants moved quietly around the room, placing warm loaves of bread and honey cakes that smelled sweet and inviting.

Across the table, Leon and Lyria were still giggling about their playful sword fight in the garden earlier that afternoon. Leon teased his sister about how loudly she had clapped when Alex won, while Lyria poked him right back with a grin.

Then the tall doors burst open with a heavy thud.

Alex and Max stepped inside, their chests rising slightly faster from their run through the city streets.

The happy chatter died instantly.

Duke Armand turned his head, his kind silver eyes widening the moment he saw Alex's serious expression.

"Alex?" the old duke asked gently, concern already filling his voice.

The warmth in the room faded like a candle in a sudden breeze.

"What happened, my boy?"

Alex walked forward without hesitation, his boots echoing against the polished stone floor. He stopped at the edge of the table and looked at each familiar face—his grandfather, his uncle, his cousins.

The family that had welcomed him with open arms.

"Grandfather," Alex said calmly but firmly, "we don't have much time."

The room fell silent.

Leon's smile faded.

Lyria's bright eyes filled with worry.

Cedric slowly rose from his chair, his tall frame casting a long shadow beneath the lantern light.

"What do you mean?" Cedric asked, his brows tightening.

Alex took a steady breath.

"The Eclipse Covenant is here in Valencrest."

He paused.

"Right under our feet."

The hall went completely still.

For several long seconds, the only sound came from the faint crackling of the fireplace and the distant hoot of a night bird outside.

Leon blinked.

"…The Eclipse Covenant?" he repeated, disbelief and anger mixing in his voice.

Lyria's cheerful expression faded into pale concern.

"Here?" she whispered. "In our city?"

Cedric's eyes sharpened like a hunting hawk.

"Tell us everything."

Duke Armand rose slowly from his chair, surprising everyone with the speed of his movement. His silver hair caught the lantern light as a quiet but powerful presence filled the room.

"Explain, Alex," the duke said calmly. "Leave nothing out."

Alex nodded and told the entire story quickly but clearly.

He spoke of following the suspicious man through the crowded streets, noticing the black scorpion mark, and using the system to reveal the truth.

Max stepped forward and added his own account in a calm voice, describing how they had secretly entered the hidden bunker beneath the city and overheard the cultists speaking.

"They've built a secret base beneath the old district," Alex finished.

"They're preparing a summoning ritual."

He paused before adding the final words.

"A sacrifice ritual."

The words hung in the air like cold frost.

Lyria covered her mouth with her hand.

Leon's fists clenched tightly on the table.

Cedric's face darkened with controlled anger.

Duke Armand's kind eyes hardened into something fierce.

A faint emerald glow began rising around him.

"…In my city," he said slowly.

His voice carried quiet thunder.

"They dare bring such darkness into the home where my family laughs and children play."

Even the servants standing along the walls looked pale.

But none of them ran.

Alex felt a warm surge of pride.

This was family.

Warm and loving one moment.

Strong and united the next.

Max spoke again.

"They also said the summoning must not fail this time."

Cedric turned toward his father.

"Father. We cannot delay."

Duke Armand nodded once.

His voice became steel.

"We move immediately."

He turned to the guards waiting near the doors.

"Prepare the knights."

"Seal every street around the old district."

"No one enters or leaves until we say so."

The guards saluted sharply.

"Yes, Your Grace!"

They hurried out of the hall.

The Duke looked back at Alex.

"You will lead us to that bunker."

Alex nodded without hesitation.

"Right away."

Leon stepped forward with a fierce grin.

"Finally. Some real action."

"I'm coming too."

Lyria swallowed nervously but lifted her chin.

"I can help with healing charms if someone gets hurt."

Duke Armand placed a gentle hand on Alex's shoulder.

"We protect what is ours."

Then he turned to everyone.

"Let's go."

The hall filled with purposeful movement.

Swords were fastened.

Cloaks were secured.

Protective enchantments shimmered softly across armor.

Within moments, the peaceful family gathering had transformed into a united force ready to face the darkness.

The Hidden Bunker

Not long after, the old district streets filled with quiet movement.

Knights in emerald armor surrounded the plain storage building without a sound.

Max whispered beside Alex.

"This is the place."

Duke Armand stared at the simple wooden door.

"So the rats hid beneath my city," he said quietly.

"Not for long."

Alex pushed the door open slowly.

Cold air rose from the stone staircase below.

A sour smell of dark magic drifted upward.

Duke Armand spoke calmly.

"Everyone. Stay close."

The knights drew their swords.

Green enchantments shimmered along their blades.

"Move."

They descended together.

Torchlight flickered along the stone walls.

The air grew colder.

Heavier.

Dark magic hung like poisonous fog.

Then voices drifted upward.

"…The circle is nearly complete."

"…Prepare the sacrifice."

Duke Armand stepped into the chamber.

"ENOUGH!"

His voice exploded through the underground hall like thunder.

Chaos erupted instantly.

Cloaked cultists spun around in shock.

The ritual circle cracked as knights charged forward.

Steel clashed.

Dark magic flared.

Alex rushed into battle.

Two cultists attacked him immediately.

Dark symbols crawled across their arms like living tattoos.

Alex dodged the first strike.

His sword flashed.

CLANG!

The cultist was thrown backward.

Max fought beside him like an unbreakable wall.

The knights clashed with the rest.

Emerald magic pushed back the purple shadows.

Then a voice echoed through the chamber.

"…So the duke finally arrived."

The battle paused.

From the far side of the room, a man stepped forward slowly.

Malrec Voss.

The Third Elder.

His cloak moved like living darkness.

His eyes glowed faint purple.

"…How unfortunate," he said.

Duke Armand stepped forward.

"You dare bring your filth into my city."

Malrec chuckled softly.

"You misunderstand."

"We are bringing salvation."

Dark magic gathered around his hand.

Purple curse marks spread across the floor.

The air trembled.

Duke Armand drew his sword.

Emerald lightning burst from the blade.

"Knights!"

"Destroy them!"

The battle erupted again.

Alex fought two cultists at once.

Dark magic collided with dragon-empowered strikes.

Max fought beside him.

At the center of the chamber—

Duke Armand and Malrec faced each other.

Two powerful forces.

Two overwhelming presences.

Malrec lifted his hand slowly.

"A Duke of the Empire…"

"…this will be interesting."

Duke Armand stepped forward.

"Your crimes end tonight."

Their powers collided.

A massive shockwave blasted through the chamber.

The ritual circle shattered.

Stone cracked.

Alex turned toward the center—

The power between them was terrifying.

Then Malrec smiled.

"…Ah."

"…Too late."

The broken ritual circle suddenly began glowing again.

Purple light burst from the cracks.

A deep rumble echoed beneath the chamber.

Something massive was waking beneath Valencrest.

Alex's heart sank.

"…No."

The ground split apart.

Dark energy exploded upward.

And from the hidden depths beneath the city—

Something enormous began to rise.
