Chapter 16 - " A LIE CELEBRATED, A STORM AWAKENED"

Prologue:A fake confession lit the hall with joy—but in the shadows, obsession took its first terrifying breath.

Lara froze.

The words Zaden had just spoken still echoed in her ears, heavy, impossible—and yet, the room had already accepted them as truth. Applause broke out like a wave, loud and celebratory. Laughter followed, glasses clinked, and voices rose in excitement. But what truly stunned everyone wasn't the announcement—it was him.

Zaden was smiling.

Not his usual restrained curve of the lips, not the polite, distant expression he wore like armor. This was different. It was open, warm… real. The kind of smile that softened his entire face and made him look like someone no one in his family had ever seen before.

Shock rippled through them.

All except Simon and Richard, who stood at a distance exchanging knowing glances, as if they had seen this coming long before anyone else dared to imagine it.

In the middle of it all, Zaden's gaze found Lara.

And it didn't leave.

There was something intense in his eyes—something raw, almost aching. A silent pull, filled with yearning that made Lara's chest tighten. She couldn't understand it. Couldn't decode what he was doing, what he was thinking… or why his eyes felt so honest when everything else about this situation was a lie.

Her mind spun.

What is he planning…?

But the crowd was watching. Waiting. Judging.

So she smiled.

It wasn't hesitant. It wasn't forced. It was perfect.

Lara slipped into the role effortlessly, her expression blooming into something soft and radiant as she acknowledged the congratulations, nodding gracefully, even leaning slightly closer to Zaden as if she belonged beside him. Every gesture, every glance—convincing.

Too convincing.

Zaden stared at her, momentarily caught off guard.

"How are you this good at everything?" he asked quietly, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

Lara blinked, tilting her head slightly. "At what?"

"At this," he said, gesturing subtly toward the crowd. "You're acting too well."

Her eyes sharpened immediately. She turned to him, a faint challenge rising in her gaze. "And what about you?"

Zaden frowned slightly. "What about me?"

She held his gaze for a second longer than necessary before looking away. "The way you look at me… what is that?"

He stilled. "What?"

"That eye thing," she muttered, almost under her breath, as if unsure she even wanted an answer. "You're really good at it."

"What eye thing?" he pressed, genuinely confused.

But Lara didn't answer.

She just looked at him again—briefly, carefully—and then turned away, as if the answer scared her more than the question.

Before the moment could stretch any further, the cousins swarmed in.

Simon clapped Zaden on the shoulder with a smirk. "Congrats, man. Finally told her about your feelings, huh?"

Zaden's heartbeat stumbled.

For a split second, panic flashed through him. But the crowd was too close, too loud, too invested. There was no room for truth here—only performance.

Lara saved him.

She laughed—light, musical, believable. Leaning slightly into him, she played along as if she had just been confessed to, her cheeks lifting with a shy glow, her reactions so natural that even Zaden almost believed it himself.

But not everyone was celebrating.

Somewhere far from the center of laughter and light, Jeylin was breaking.

She ran blindly, tears blurring her vision until she reached a quiet park near the hall. Her breaths came in uneven gasps as she collapsed onto a bench, her hands trembling.

Conrad found her there.

"Hey… hey, calm down," he said gently, sitting beside her. "Don't cry like this. You'll find someone better. Someone you actually deserve."

Jeylin's head snapped toward him.

"No," she said, her voice shaking—but not with sadness anymore. Something darker crept in. "I won't give up on Zaden."

Her fingers curled tightly into her dress. "I've loved him since the day I met him. Twenty-six years, Conrad. Twenty-six." Her voice rose, cracking under the weight of obsession. "And now some random girl walks in and takes him away? And I'm supposed to just accept that?"

Her laugh came out wrong—twisted, hollow.

"Never."

The word echoed like something unhinged, her voice almost unrecognizable.

Conrad felt a chill crawl up his spine.

"Jeylin… stop, you're not thinking straight—"

Before he could finish, she snapped. Throwing her phone and purse onto the ground, she ran—barefoot, frantic, like she was being chased by something only she could see.

"Jeylin!" he shouted, but she didn't stop.

He stood there, frozen for a moment, before rushing back toward the hall, his heart pounding, sweat clinging to his skin.

Something was very wrong.

Back inside, the celebration was still in full swing.

Zaden and Lara stood at the center, surrounded by admiration, their presence drawing every eye. People whispered about how perfect they looked together, how it felt like fate, like something written long before this moment.

A match made in heaven.

But at the edges of the hall, tension brewed.

Jeylin's parents were searching, their excitement turning into unease with every passing second.

Conrad found them.

And when he told them everything, the color drained from their faces.

Without another word, they left.

Right in the middle of the celebration.

The sudden exit didn't go unnoticed. Whispers turned sharp, confusion spread, and a quiet crack formed between the two families—a misunderstanding that would not heal easily.

Mr. James tried to stop them, tried to explain, but it was too late.

They were gone.

Zaden's mother, however… was smiling.

Her eyes lingered on Lara with approval, even warmth.

"It's fine," she said softly to James. "We'll handle it. Let's talk to the girl's parents."

With that, she approached Lara, gently guiding her away from the crowd along with Zaden, dismissing the others with a cheerful assurance to continue enjoying the evening.

Up close, her smile was even brighter.

"So, dear," she began warmly, "where are your parents? We should meet them. It's time we discuss things properly."

Lara's heart dropped.

Her fingers trembled slightly at her sides, panic creeping in before she could hide it.

"They… they're not here," she said quickly, her voice unsteady. "I—I need to make a call."

Before they could question further, she turned and walked away—too fast to be casual.

Zaden noticed.

Of course he did.

Excusing himself smoothly, he followed her.

He found her standing in a quiet corner, her back to him, shoulders tense.

"Is everything okay?" he asked softly.

She turned immediately, forcing a smile. "Yes, of course."

But he didn't look convinced.

"What's going on?" she asked instead, her tone shifting. "Why are you doing all this? Are you trying to escape something… or someone? Your fiancée, maybe?"

Zaden exhaled slowly.

"I don't have a fiancée."

She gave him a look that clearly said liar.

"I didn't entirely lie," he corrected, running a hand through his hair. "Jeylin and I… it was an arrangement. Our parents decided it when we were still in school. Just because I used to talk to her."

He paused, his voice lowering.

"I told them no. I never saw her that way. But they didn't listen. She… loves me. And they kept pushing. I didn't have a choice but to lie again."

Silence lingered between them.

"Sorry," he added quietly.

Lara looked at him, conflicted.

"Well, now I'm in trouble for helping you," she muttered.

"Why?" he asked, studying her face. "Do you have someone? A fiancé?"

For a brief second, Brian's face crossed his mind, sharp and unwelcome.

"That's… personal," she said, her tone closing off. "But I have issues with my parents. Serious ones. I can't let them meet your family. Ever. So figure something out."

Zaden held her gaze for a moment, then nodded.

"Alright. I won't push."

And just like that, the tension eased.

They found themselves talking again, lighter this time. Smiling. Laughing. As if the chaos surrounding them didn't exist.

From a distance, Mr. James and his wife watched, happiness filling their eyes.

Their son… was finally changing.

Finally alive.

But peace never lasted long.

Zaden's phone rang.

Conrad.

The moment he answered, his expression darkened.

"What?" he snapped.

What he heard was enough.

His jaw tightened, anger flashing across his face so suddenly it startled even Lara.

"Get in the car," he said sharply.

She didn't question him.

Something in his tone told her not to.

The drive was silent.

Heavy.

When they reached her house, Lara stepped out slowly. But before she could leave, she turned back.

Zaden was looking at her.

That same look.

Deep. Intense. Unreadable.

Something in her chest stirred—confusion, curiosity… maybe even something more .

"Thank you," she said softly, bowing her head slightly.

He didn't respond.

He just smiled.

And then he left.

This time, not with warmth—but with a storm burning behind his eyes.

Toward a house that was no longer calm.

Toward a night that was about to explode.
