Chapter 25 - The Devil’s game

The door shut behind her with a soft click.

Helena didn't turn around.

Didn't speak.

Didn't move.

Because she could feel it—The shift.

The moment she stepped into his world…

Everything changed.

"Welcome back," Adrian said calmly.

His voice echoed slightly in the dim space, smooth and controlled, like he had been waiting for this moment.

Helena slowly lifted her gaze.

The room was unfamiliar.

Dark. Minimal. Expensive.

No windows.

No way out.

Her pulse quickened—but she refused to show it.

"I'm not here by choice," she said coldly.

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Choice is an illusion," he replied. "You proved that five years ago."

Her jaw tightened.

"That wasn't a choice," she snapped.

"It was a decision," he corrected.

A pause.

"And you made it."

Anger flared through her chest—but she forced it down.

Losing control here wasn't an option.

Not anymore.

"Where is my family?" she asked.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked past her slowly, circling like he was studying her again.

"They're safe," he said eventually.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting for now."

Helena clenched her fists.

"You said you'd release them."

"I said I'd consider it," he replied smoothly.

Her heart pounded harder.

"You're lying."

Adrian stopped in front of her.

Close.

Too close.

"And yet," he said softly, "you still came."

Silence fell between them.

Because he wasn't wrong.

She had come.

Knowing exactly what kind of man he was.

Knowing exactly what this could turn into.

Helena lifted her chin slightly.

"I came because I don't lose the people I love."

Something flickered in his eyes.

Brief.

Gone just as fast.

"Interesting," he murmured.

A beat.

"Let's see how long that lasts."

Her breath caught—but she didn't look away.

"Touch them," she said quietly, "and you lose everything."

Adrian's lips curved slightly.

"You're not in a position to threaten me."

"Neither were you," she shot back. "Five years ago."

That made him pause.

Just for a second.

Enough for her to see it.

A crack.

Small.

But real.

Helena took a step forward.

"You needed me then," she said. "And you still do."

Adrian's gaze darkened.

"Careful."

"No," she said. "You didn't bring me here just to sit in a room."

A beat.

"You want something."

Silence.

Tense.

Sharp.

Then—Adrian smiled again.

Slow. Calculated.

"Good," he said softly. "You're finally thinking."

Helena's pulse steadied slightly.

She was right.

This wasn't random.

This wasn't just revenge.

This was a move.

"What do you want?" she asked.

Adrian stepped closer again.

Close enough that she could feel the shift in the air between them.

"You," he said simply.

Her breath caught.

"No," she said immediately. "That's not it."

His brow lifted slightly.

"Confident."

"Calculated," she corrected.

A pause.

"People like you don't act without purpose."

Adrian studied her for a long moment.

Then—

"You're useful," he said.

There it was.

The truth.

Helena's chest tightened.

"For what?"

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"To control him."

Her heart skipped.

"Marcus?"

"Yes."

The room seemed to close in slightly.

Helena shook her head. "You don't need me for that."

"I do," he said calmly.

A beat.

"Because he cares about you."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Helena's voice dropped.

"That's your mistake."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"No," he said.

"It's yours."

Before she could respond—The door behind her opened.

Helena turned sharply.

Two men entered.

One of them holding something.

Her stomach dropped.

A tablet.

The screen was already on.

Adrian gestured slightly.

"Show her."

The man stepped forward, turning the screen toward Helena.

Her breath stopped.

Because what she saw—Was her family.

Alive.

But not free.

Locked in a room.

Scared.

Waiting.

Tears filled her eyes instantly—but she forced them back.

"They're fine," Adrian said calmly.

"For now."

Helena's hands trembled.

"You said you wouldn't hurt them."

"I haven't," he replied.

A pause.

"Yet."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"What do you want me to do?" she asked.

Adrian's gaze darkened slightly.

"Simple," he said.

"You're going to help me break him."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Helena froze.

"No."

Adrian stepped closer again.

"And if you don't," he continued softly, "they suffer."

Her heart shattered.

"You're asking me to destroy him."

"I'm asking you to choose," he corrected.

A long, suffocating silence followed.

Helena stared at the screen again.

Her family.

Terrified.

Helpless.

Then—Marcus's face flashed in her mind.

His voice.

You trust me?

Yes.

Her breath shook.

This wasn't just a trap.

This was war.

And she was right in the middle of it.

Helena slowly lifted her head.

Her eyes met Adrian's.

Cold.

Steady.

"I'll do it," she said.

A slow smile spread across his face.

"I knew you would."

But what Adrian didn't see—What he didn't understand—Was the truth behind her decision.

Because Helena wasn't choosing him.

And she wasn't betraying Marcus.

She was stepping deeper into the game…

So she could destroy it from the inside.
