Chapter 4 - SEASON 2: THE RETURN OF SERAPHINA

Chapter 4:

The Trap

The city never really sleeps. Not tonight—and Clara isn't either.

Her penthouse is dim, shadows stretching everywhere, and the silence feels thick, almost suffocating. Something is lurking, she can feel it.

Clara stands right in the middle of the room, arms folded, her mind sharper than ever.

Seraphina made her move.

It's Clara's turn now.

"You're sure about this?" Adrian's voice slices through the hush.

Clara keeps her back to him. "No," she says—steady, calm.

A beat.

"But I don't have a choice."

Adrian steps up. He's close enough now. "This could blow up in your face."

Clara finally looks at him. Her gaze, steady. No sign of breaking.

"She wants me doubting everyone," Clara says. "So I'm going to give her exactly what she wants."

Adrian's brow knits.

"And the cost?"

Her lip hooks up—icy, deliberate.

"Worth it."

The Plan

Morning comes and Clara walks into the office like nothing happened. But everything has changed.

Marcus is already there—and Adrian too.

Three people, one secret.

Clara slides out three identical files, sets them on the table. Each sealed, stamped confidential.

"We're rolling out a new expansion strategy," she says, completely unfazed.

Marcus raises an eyebrow. "That was quick."

Clara nods. "It's fast. But this time, we're splitting the information."

Adrian gets it right away. Marcus doesn't.

"Splitting?"

Without missing a beat, Clara pushes one file toward Marcus, another to Adrian, and keeps the last for herself.

"Each of you gets a different version," she says.

Silence hangs heavy.

Then Marcus's face shifts. Understanding flashes.

"You're testing us."

Clara doesn't confirm, doesn't deny.

"I'm protecting what's mine."

The room gets tense. Sharp. Adrian stays stone-faced. Marcus reacts.

"You don't trust me," Marcus says.

Clara looks him square in the eye. "I trust results."

The Waiting Game

Hours crawl by. Nothing happens.

Then, out of nowhere, everything goes up in flames.

By sunset, headlines scream: "INSIDE LEAK: Clara's New Strategy EXPOSED."

Clara stays still as Marcus bursts in.

"It's out," he says.

Adrian follows, silent, watching.

Clara doesn't move or speak. Just grabs her tablet, scrolls, stops.

Her eyes go cold.

She sees the leaked version.

Not hers. Not Adrian's.

She lifts her gaze, slow, deliberate.

Looks right at Marcus.

The Confrontation

The mood drops, icy.

Marcus notices.

"What?" he asks.

Clara stands. Slow, purposeful.

"That leak…" she says, low.

A pause.

"…was your file."

Silence, thick enough to choke on.

Marcus freezes, then laughs—a short, brittle sound.

"You're serious?"

Clara doesn't blink.

Adrian shifts forward. Tension rising.

"I didn't leak anything," Marcus says, his voice twisting sharper.

Clara moves closer. Her heels click against the floor.

"But your version is the one they released."

Marcus shakes his head. "That doesn't prove anything."

Clara doesn't hesitate. "No—it proves everything."

Breaking Point

Marcus rakes a hand through his hair. Frustration simmering into anger.

"This is exactly what she wanted!" he snaps.

Clara's face stays locked, unreadable.

"And you handed it to her."

"That's not true!"

"Then explain."

Nothing. Silence.

Marcus opens his mouth—closes it.

He can't.

Clara catches it. The hesitation. The crack.

That's all she needs.

The Decision

Clara steps back. Voice cool, conclusive.

"You're suspended."

Marcus freezes.

"What?"

"Until I know for sure."

His eyes grow darker.

"You're making a mistake."

Clara tilts her head—just a bit.

"Am I?"

Marcus looks between her and Adrian. Something hidden flickers in his eyes.

Then, he laughs again. It's nothing like before.

"It's already too late," he says, barely above a whisper.

He walks out.

Aftermath

The door clicks shut. Quiet settles over everything.

Adrian exhales, slow.

"You really think he did it?"

Clara doesn't answer right away. Something's off and she knows it.

Sure—the evidence screams Marcus.

But Seraphina? She's never that obvious.

"No," Clara finally says.

Adrian frowns. "Then why—"

"Because I needed him to react."

She waits.

"And he did."

Across the City

Seraphina watches the news.

Marcus—suspended.

Clara—alone.

Perfect.

Her lips curl into a slow smile.

"She took the bait," her ally says.

Seraphina shakes her head. Barely.

"No."

She lets the pause hang.

"She's smarter than that."

Her eyes grow colder.

"But not smart enough."

The Twist

Back in the penthouse, Clara stands alone again.

Her phone vibrates.

She already knows.

She opens the message.

"Wrong choice."

Her jaw sets.

Another message hits.

"He wasn't the one."

Silence.

For the first time, Clara feels it.

A flicker.

Not quite fear—but close enough.

Because if Marcus isn't the traitor…

Just one person left.

Final Scene

Clara turns—slow, deliberate.

Her eyes set on Adrian.

Standing in the doorway.

Watching her.

Quiet.

Unreadable.

Suddenly she realizes—

Nothing feels certain anymore.
