CHAPTER 13
The Black Technology Market
He went to the library.
Not the shelter's shelf — the city's main branch, a forty-year-old building with reading tables that smelled of institutional cleaning product and the accumulated density of all the information that had passed through them. He had a library card. He had renewed it every year since he was twelve and it had expired during that year's administrative shuffle and he had stood at the desk and explained, very precisely, why the expiration was an administrative error, and the librarian had re-issued it.
He went to the library because the library had engineering reference materials, manufacturing process guides, patent databases, and a section of industrial technology periodicals that nobody else in his experience ever read, and which therefore offered a quality of uninterrupted, unobserved thinking time that was difficult to find elsewhere.
He took a table at the far end of the third floor. He laid out the notebook. He opened the System interface.
Then he entered the Black Technology Market properly for the first time.
He had glanced at it once before — the night the warehouse operation ran, when he'd seen the micro-void engine blueprint at the top of the catalogue. Now he went through it with the methodical attention of a person doing due diligence rather than shopping. He read every description. He noted the SP cost of each item. He cross-referenced what he knew — from the engineering references around him and from his own seven years of working with machinery at the dock — with what the blueprints were claiming to accomplish.
The catalogues were arranged by category. He read through four of them before he had a sufficiently clear picture to begin making decisions.

He sat with this for a long time.
His current SP balance, exclusive of the hundred centillion vault, was the hundred Skill Points remaining from his pre-vault accumulation plus whatever the daily logins had added — approximately five hundred SP total in the freely spendable allocation. The hundred centillion vault was, in principle, available for conversion, but he had not yet converted anything because he was still understanding the mechanics.
He needed to understand those mechanics before he moved.
He focused on the conversion interface.
⟦ TRIBULATION WEALTH SYSTEM ⟧
CASH CONVERSION ENGINE — HOST GUIDE
MECHANICS:
SP from the Vault converts to USD at:
1 centillion SP = $1,000,000 USD
MONEY MULTIPLIER:
When converted cash is SPENT, the System
applies a return multiplier to each transaction.
Current Multiplier Rate (Host Level: Initiate):
x10 return on all qualifying expenditures.
WHAT IS A QUALIFYING EXPENDITURE?
Any purchase that advances Host's stated purpose.
The System defines 'stated purpose' broadly.
If in doubt, spend toward building something.
CASH REBATE ENGINE:
A separate mechanism from the Multiplier.
Activates on large purchases (>$10M).
Returns 20% of the purchase price as SP
back to the Vault.
EXAMPLE:
Host converts 1 centillion SP = $1,000,000
Host spends $1,000,000 on qualifying item
System returns: $10,000,000 value (x10 multiplier)
Plus: 200,000 SP back to Vault (rebate)
NOTE: The Vault is self-replenishing at
the base rate of 1 centillion SP per day.
It has been self-replenishing for 21 years.
Accumulated surplus: see Vault balance.
He read this three times. He wrote down the key figures in the notebook.
The vault replenished at one centillion SP per day. It had been replenishing for twenty-one years — since his birth, or since the System's initialization, which appeared to have preceded his birth by some margin. Twenty-one years at one centillion per day was approximately seven thousand six hundred and sixty-five centillion SP in accumulated balance, plus the initial allocation.
The hundred centillion listed in the balance was, he now understood, not the total vault balance but the immediately liquid, conversion-ready allocation — the amount the System had judged appropriate to make available at this stage of his development. The full vault balance was a different number.
He looked at the System and asked, directly: what is the full vault balance?
⟦ TRIBULATION WEALTH SYSTEM ⟧
VAULT — FULL BALANCE DISCLOSURE
[Unlocked at Tier 7 clearance]
TOTAL ACCUMULATED BALANCE:
Approximately 7,665 centillion SP
(21 years x 365 days x 1 centillion/day
+ initial allocation + milestone bonuses)
CONVERTIBLE CASH VALUE AT CURRENT RATE:
Approximately $7,665,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
USD
[A number that does not fit in any
existing human financial framework]
DAILY REPLENISHMENT: +1 centillion SP/day
REBATE INCOME: variable (increases with activity)
RECOMMENDATION:
Begin with modest conversions.
The financial system needs preparation
before it can receive what the Vault contains.
You do not need to spend everything at once.
You have been waiting 21 years.
The Vault has been waiting longer.
He sat in the library for a full hour after reading this, which for him was an extraordinary length of still time. Around him the reference materials accumulated their patient silence and the librarian on the third floor re-shelved things with the rhythmic care of her profession.
Seven thousand six hundred and sixty-five centillion Skill Points.
He thought: begin with modest conversions. The System was right. He had seen what happened to structures that received forces they were not designed for — he had watched load-bearing mistakes at the dock with the wincing competence of someone who understood what came next. The financial system around him was not built for what the vault contained. He needed to deploy it in a way that built capacity as it moved, not in a way that simply collapsed the existing structure under the weight.
He had a plan for this. He had had the bones of it since the day after the awakening. Now he had the instruments.
He opened the notebook to a fresh page and began to write.
At the top he wrote: STEP ONE.
Below it, he wrote three words: Buy the Dock.
