Chapter 45 - The Unbreakable Bond

The collision was not an explosion of light, but a sickening, visceral crack. Sasuke's Chidori, a spear of focused hatred, pierced the swirling red chakra of Naruto's cloak. For a terrifying moment, it seemed it would skewer him completely. But the density of the Kyuubi's chakra was immense, like punching into a solid wall of enraged energy. The lightning sizzled and dissipated, inches from Naruto's chest.

At the same time, Naruto's clawed hand, swathed in demonic chakra, raked across Sasuke's torso. The Curse Seal's hardened skin offered some protection, but it was not enough. The fabric of his shirt shredded, and four deep, bleeding gashes were torn open across his chest.

The force of the mutual impact sent them both flying backward, skidding across the churning surface of the water.

Sasuke clutched his chest, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked at his hand, then at the blood seeping through his fingers. He was bleeding. He was bleeding. A fresh wave of fury, cold and sharp, washed over him. He had underestimated the sheer, brute force of the demon fox.

Across the water, Naruto landed on all fours, his head low. A low, guttural growl rumbled in his chest, the only sound he was capable of making. The Kyuubi's chakra cloak bubbled, the single tail lashing back and forth, whipping up spray from the waterfall. The pain of his injuries was gone, drowned in a sea of red rage. There was only the target. The enemy. The one who had to be destroyed.

A flicker of blue text appeared in the corner of Naruto's vision, a tiny island of logic in an ocean of chaos. He didn't see it. He only saw Sasuke through the Kyuubi's slitted, blood-red eyes.

"You're just a mindless beast," Sasuke snarled, pushing himself to his feet. His three-tomoe Sharingan were spinning wildly, processing every detail of Naruto's monstrous form. He could see the flow of the chakra, the tension in the beast's muscles, the subtle twitch that preceded an attack. The fear was still there, a cold knot in his stomach, but it was being crushed under the weight of his Uchiha pride.

"I don't need to be stronger than the fox," Sasuke thought, his mind racing. "I just need to be stronger than you, Naruto."

He spread his grotesque wings, and with a powerful flap, he launched himself into the air, hovering above the water. From this vantage point, he had the advantage.

"Let's see how you handle this!" he yelled, bringing his wings forward with a sharp snap. Dozens of sharp, chakra-infused feathers, black as night, shot down towards Naruto like a volley of arrows.

Naruto reacted purely on instinct. He leaped to the side, his movements impossibly fast, a red blur against the grey water. The feathers impacted the surface where he had been, sending up geysers of steam and hissing as they dissolved. But a few found their mark, piercing the chakra cloak and embedding themselves in Naruto's arm and leg. He roared in pain, a sound that was both human and beast.

The red chakra around the wounds flared, and the feathers were forcefully expelled, the wounds sealing almost instantly. But the attack had done its job. It had shown Sasuke that the cloak, while powerful, was not impenetrable. And it had made the beast even angrier.

Naruto crouched low, then sprang upward, covering the distance to Sasuke in a single, massive leap. He moved like a predator, his clawed hand outstretched to snatch Sasuke from the sky.

But Sasuke was ready. His fully matured Sharingan had predicted the trajectory. He twisted in mid-air, narrowly avoiding the swipe, and drove his elbow down hard onto the back of Naruto's neck.

The blow landed with a sickening thud. Naruto's momentum was broken, and he plummeted towards the water, crashing into it with a tremendous splash that sent waves crashing against the base of the statues.

For a moment, there was only the rain and the roar of the falls. Then, a red aura erupted from the water's surface. Naruto burst out, his eyes burning with an even more intense light. The single tail of chakra had grown thicker, more powerful.

Inside his mindscape, Naruto was drowning. The sewer was flooded with the Kyuubi's red chakra. The massive, barred gate that contained the beast was groaning under the pressure, the seal paper peeling away.

"GIVE IN!" the Kyuubi's voice boomed, shaking the very foundations of his consciousness. "LET ME HAVE CONTROL! I WILL TEAR HIM APART! I WILL SHOW THEM ALL TRUE POWER!"

But in the corner of the flooded sewer, a tiny blue light was pulsing. [SYSTEM REBOOT COMPLETE. CORE CONSCIOUSNESS RESTORED. ACCESSING MEMORY BANKS...]

Images flashed in Naruto's mind, faster and faster. Iruka's smile. The Third Hokage's kind words. Hinata watching him from afar. Kiba's arrogant grin. Shikamaru's lazy sigh. Choji's bag of chips. Lee's thumbs-up.

And then, Sakura. Crying. Pleading. "Please… bring Sasuke back."

No.

The thought was a whisper at first, then a shout.

NO! I'm not the Kyuubi! I'm Uzumaki Naruto!

He reached for the blue light, for the memories, for the promise. It was his anchor in the storm of rage.

Back in the real world, Sasuke was pressing his advantage. He dive-bombed Naruto, raining down blows enhanced by the Curse Seal. Each impact sent shockwaves through the water, but Naruto kept getting up, the Kyuubi's chakra healing his wounds as fast as they were made.

"It's useless!" Sasuke yelled, frustration mounting. "You can't beat me! You're just a stubborn little animal!"

Naruto looked up, and for a split second, the raging red in his eyes seemed to flicker, revealing a sliver of the familiar blue beneath. He wasn't just a beast. He was fighting back.

He slammed his palm into the water's surface, channeling all his will, all his pain, all his promise into a single point. The Kyuubi's chakra, now guided by Naruto's consciousness instead of its own rage, swirled violently. A massive Rasengan formed, larger than any he had ever created. It was a swirling vortex of blue and red chakra, a miniature storm of his own making, humming with a power that made the very air tremble.

Sasuke's eyes widened. He could feel the colossal energy being gathered. He knew his standard Chidori would not be enough. This was it. The final exchange.

He landed back on the finger of Madara's statue, his feet digging into the stone. He pressed his left hand to his cursed right arm, channeling every last drop of the seal's malevolent power. The lightning in his palm turned from white to a deep, ominous black, crackling with purple arcs of energy. It was no longer just the chirping of a thousand birds; it was the shriek of a thousand demons.

"This is the end, Naruto!" Sasuke screamed, his voice raw with emotion. "My hatred is stronger than your promise!"

"I'LL SHOW YOU… THE STRENGTH OF MY PROMISE!" Naruto roared back, his voice his own again, layered with the Kyuubi's guttural growl.

They moved simultaneously. A red and blue blur shot across the water. A black and purple streak met it from the air. The two most powerful genin in Konoha, one a vessel of demonic rage, the other a vessel of inherited hatred, converged one last time in the heart of the Valley of the End.

The black Chidori met the red Rasengan.

The world went white.
