Chapter 13 - This isn’t Normal

Lucy stood in front of the mirror longer than usual.

Her uniform was on.

Her bag was ready.

Everything looked normal.

But it wasn't.

She wasn't going to work.

Not today.

She picked up her bag slowly.

"…Just go out," she murmured.

"Don't think too much."

In the living room, Ruben glanced up. "You're heading out?"

Lucy nodded. "Yeah."

"You've been serious these days," he said, stretching. "Work?"

Lucy gave a small shrug. "Something like that."

From the kitchen, Mrs. Annabella called, "Lucy, take your food before you go!"

Lucy walked in and collected it.

"Eat on time," her mother said.

"I will."

Mrs. Annabella looked at her briefly. "Don't let work stress you too much."

Lucy smiled faintly. "I won't."

Mr. Joe stepped out. "Going already?"

"Yes."

He nodded once. "Do your best."

Lucy held her bag tighter. "I will."

She stepped outside.

Closed the door.

And paused.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Then she turned—

Not toward the usual road.

Her steps were slower now.

No rush.

No clear direction.

Just… away.

Her phone rang.

Lucy stopped.

She looked at the screen.

Supervisor.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the phone.

She answered.

"Hello?"

"Lucy," the voice came, direct and firm.

"Yes, ma."

"Where are you?"

Lucy glanced ahead. "…On my way."

"Good," the supervisor said. "Come in immediately."

Lucy frowned. "Ma, I thought—"

"Your suspension has been lifted," she cut in. "Resume work today."

Lucy went silent.

"…Today?" she asked.

"Yes. Don't be late."

The line ended.

Lucy stood still for a second.

The words replaying in her head.

Resume work today.

She turned.

This time—

She didn't hesitate.

The office building came into view.

Same as always.

But her steps felt heavier.

"Morning," the security guard said as she walked in.

Lucy nodded. "Morning."

He looked at her briefly, then returned to what he was doing.

Inside, the atmosphere felt tight.

Not loud.

Not busy.

Just… watching.

"Lucy?"

Clara stood up immediately. "You're here?"

Lucy walked toward her. "They called me."

Clara frowned. "Called you? For what?"

"They said I should resume today."

Clara blinked. "Just like that?"

Lucy nodded. "That's what I was told."

Clara looked around briefly, then leaned closer. "This isn't normal."

Lucy exhaled. "Nothing about this is."

A voice cut in.

"Lucy."

They both turned.

The supervisor stood a few steps away.

"Come here."

Lucy walked over.

"Yes, ma."

The supervisor looked at her for a moment.

Then nodded. "You'll continue your duties as usual."

Lucy blinked slightly. "Yes, ma."

"And Lucy," she added, her tone steady, "focus on your work."

Lucy held her gaze. "I always do."

A brief pause.

Then the supervisor turned and walked away.

Lucy stood there for a second.

Then picked up her supplies.

The office didn't feel the same.

People still worked.

Still talked.

Still moved around.

But something had shifted.

As Lucy passed by, two staff members lowered their voices.

"…they said she's back?"

"I thought she was—"

Their voices faded as she walked past.

She entered the accounts office.

Paused at the door.

Then stepped in.

Everything looked normal.

Desks.

Files.

Chairs.

Exactly how she remembered it.

Lucy moved slowly.

Carefully.

Wiping surfaces.

Avoiding anything unnecessary.

The door opened behind her.

She turned slightly.

One of the senior staff stepped in, glanced around, then at her.

"You're back," he said.

"Yes."

He watched her for a second.

Then nodded and walked out.

Lucy continued working.

But her focus wasn't steady.

Her movements were.

Her thoughts weren't.

Later, in the hallway—

Footsteps passed.

Voices low.

Controlled.

Not directed at her.

But not far either.

Lucy kept walking.

Didn't look.

Didn't stop.

At the reception, Clara whispered, "How do you feel?"

Lucy placed the cloth down. "Like nothing makes sense."

Clara nodded. "That's exactly how it feels."

Lucy glanced around.

People were working.

Talking.

Normal.

But underneath—

Something wasn't.

She picked up her bucket again.

"Let me just finish my work," she said quietly.

Clara watched her for a second.

Then nodded. "Yeah… just do that."

Lucy walked away.

Steady.

Focused.

Like nothing had changed.

But for the first time—

She felt it clearly.

She wasn't just working anymore.

She was being watched.
